I can't tell you how pleased I was when I brought my flute to Flying Squirrel for repair. The woman (sorry I did not catch your name) was so competent and knew her way around a flute. She was able to quickly identify the problem, fixed it and proceeded to do a thorough evaluation of my flute, making sure it was in good order all around. To my pleasant surprise, the cost was very reasonable and I left with a flute in perfect working condition. I don't usually do something like this, but I felt very compelled because of the way I was treated by this company. I've been going there about two years for repairs. I bite my lip every time I go because they're very condescending last week I took my saxophone in for general repairs, and it still didn't work. The main guy actually had the audacity and nerve to say to me. Do you even play saxophone? I've never been so insulted in all of my life. Long story short I just dropped it off with another repairman who found no less than four leaks. So besides being arrogant it appears they have no clue how to fix instruments. So my question to them is, do you even know how to fix instruments. I do not recommend these people at all. read more

I had been a customer of the flying squirrel staff for over 15 years (even when they were at other locations) and they know me well, but I was very dissatisfied with the treatment I received there earlier this year when I took in my Selmer series III professional alto saxophone. I am a professional-level player with a performance degree. I have the model with a second middle C# vent to improve intonation, but when that key is out of adjustment it affects the response on the low G, F#, F making it difficult to play because of the lag in response time. I was playing my backup alto without issue at the time but I wanted to be able to have my $4000 instrument repaired so I could use it on gigs. I brought it in, but Peter was busy and handed it off to another technician who replaced the pads as a solution to the response issues and apparently did not understand the role the c# vent key played in the notes below it. Gave it back to me with $175 in work done but the same issue persisted. I brought it back and said it was still having the same problem and spoke to the technician it had been handed off to. Peter, the owner, was not there. A few days later they called me back and asked me to pick it up. As soon as I walked in the door Peter started yelling at me that I had put 'vaseline' all over the pad and it was not their work that was lacking, it was my fault for supposedly doing such a thing (I had cleaned the tone holes with some standard metal cleaner to remove any gunk that might have been making the pads stick) with my working horn. I was speechless, but they said they had done some adjustments and I hoped that it would be an improvement. It wasn't. I still rarely play this horn because it was never fixed properly and am still in shock that I was spoken to like that, I bought thousands of dollars worth of horns from Peter when he was at Marsh woodwinds. I've never been back to the flying squirrel since this episode and I don't recommend it anymore like I used to do avidly. We have used Flying Squirrel Music many times in the past few years. We have never been disappointed. They got our daughter through middle school, high school (including marching band) and now in college marching band. The staff is always friendly and are extremely good at instrument repair...and always at a fair price. One bit of advice though: don't put off having your or your kid's instrument serviced until the last minute. They are always super busy just before school starts, just before all county/district and over the winter holidays. read more

All I hear is great reviews about this place, but once I finally need repairs, they do everything wrong. I own a cheap clarinet I got in middle school. I use it for marching band. Who would want to risk using an expensive clarinet outside? I go in and explain what I want repaired. I specifically request to have nothing else done. I know my clarinet is in bad shape, but it's my last year of needing this crappy thing. I don't want top of the line repairs. It sounds like they understand what I want so I leave. I come back a week later on the date I told them I would come back, and they are only just beginning their work on my instrument. They tell me they will call me tomorrow to give me an update. They actually call me a week later, explaining it needed much more work than they thought. I would have liked that update a week ago. I come the day they told me to pick it up. They explain how they did what I ask, and apparently they "fixed" some other things they deemed necessary. Because of that, they charged me a ridiculous amount. The repairs costed more than the instrument was worth. Apparently they charge $60 an hour for their repairs. I'm sorry but instrument repair can't possibly be worth that kind of wage. TL;DR it costed more and took longer than they told me. Very bad customer service. read more

Incredible customer service, knowledge, and skill. It is clear that this group of people lives and breathes and loves music. Their turnaround time for repairing my clarinet was very fast, even considering it is back-to-school season. They did an extremely thorough job of inspecting and repairing my clarinet, and they even found a crack in it that I did not know was there, and that I could barely see with the naked eye. They had a separate room where I could test play it before I left to make sure everything worked as I hoped. Although they were busy, they took time to answer my unrelated music question, and they were very knowledgeable. The charge for repair was very reasonable. Had bought a used clarinet off of Craigslist and it was not sounding right. I feared the worst. My daughter's music director suggested we go to Flying Squirrel. We dropped in and right there on the spot the nice woman who worked there evaluated it and started working on it. Replaced some cork and did some adjustments. 15 minutes later and only $20 charge we had a clarinet working like new! Awesome! We were so grateful as our budget is pretty tight. My daughter dropped her sax during band camp. I feared the absolute worst as two notes would not play and the bell appeared bent. We went in on a Saturday, got help almost immediately and the adjustments were simple enough to do while we waited. I cannot say enough about the skilled and friendly help we received!
