As an Emerald member of the oneworld alliance, I have always appreciated the complimentary seat selection offered by most partner airlines, so I expected a comparable experience with American Airlines. Unfortunately, this flight did not live up to those expectations. I paid an additional $140 to reserve seats that appeared to provide a more favorable arrangement during the booking process. However, once my wife and I boarded the aircraft, we found that the actual seat layout differed from what had been shown online. Paying an additional fee for seats that did not match the displayed configuration was both frustrating and disappointing.
My assigned seat, [6K], also failed to provide the level of comfort I expected. The cushioning felt inadequate, making it difficult to remain comfortable throughout the journey. I relied on extra pillows and blankets to support my lower back for most of the flight. On long-distance routes, seating quality has a significant impact on the travel experience, and in this case, it left much to be desired.
The customer service experience was another weak point. I initially contacted an American Airlines representative in Detroit to request clarification about my flight details and aircraft type. Rather than receiving a direct answer, I was transferred to another department, reportedly located in Chicago, where I was informed that they could not assist me. I was then given another phone number, only to be transferred back to the original Detroit office. After several calls and repeatedly explaining the same issue, I finally reached an agent who was able to answer my questions.
The aircraft itself was clean, modern, and appeared to be well maintained, while the majority of the cabin crew remained courteous, attentive, and professional despite the demands of a busy flight. However, the onboard environment became less pleasant as the journey continued. Several passengers were disruptive and noisy, and the lavatories gradually became untidy, with wet floors, messy sinks, and a noticeable decline in overall cleanliness.
Although I appreciate the professionalism and hard work demonstrated by the flight attendants, the confusing customer service process, disappointing seating experience, and declining cabin cleanliness ultimately overshadowed the positive aspects of the trip. Based on this experience, I would be inclined to compare other airlines before booking American Airlines again for a similar journey in the future.
