The monument notes that it was erected by the Floyd Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1904. The poem on one side is "Ode" by Henry Timrod: Stoop, angels, hither from the skies! There is no holier spot of ground, Than where defeated valor lies By mourning beauty crowned. At the foot of the monument, the names of several Civil War battle fields are listed including Fredericksburg, Seven Pines, Bull Run and Manassas. It also lists the Floyd County companies of the Virginia Infantry and Cavalry that fought. It is in good condition and remains, for now, in front of the courthouse. The place is pretty easy to find and parkinng was definitely not the worst. The Good: This is the first time in my life when I went to a courthouse and it was a fairly enjoyable experience. Its spacious on the inside, well kept, secure, and modern. The most unexpected thing there was that everyone was really friendly and helpful. Not one person there from the security to the parking garage attendant seemed disgruntled. I went there to have my fingerprints taken and I had made an appointment online. Not only was the lady at the window and the lady who did my prints very friendly, but I was actually seen on time! Unbelievable. Friendly staff AND timely service at a government facility? That's new to me. If you have a choice of courthouses in the area, I would recommend this one. Plus some nice local shops are close by if yo u have to wait for someone or something, you can grab a nice coffee or whatever. The Bad: You have yo pay for parking. $2 for the first hour and $1 for every additional hour up to $10 max.

She allowed me to explain my reasoning for the date change and asked me to allow her to go and speak with the judge/magistrate to see what the possibilities were. I have to give a huge thank you to you and your staff for making my visit so pleasurable. You didn't make me feel like I was bothering you or your colleagues at all. No one enjoys going to traffic court, but this experience went better than I could've expected! I…read moregot there for 9:40 (had to be there at 10 and had no clue where to go), I went through security and they pointed me where to go from there. Like standing in line at a bank and I had only 3 people ahead of me. First window is the DA, who took my info and dismissed the case. Then I slid over to the next window, where the clerk noted the dismissal on record. Then I left! Whole thing done in 20 minutes, and I was even able to park for free in their lot. Good experience and hopefully don't have to go again!

She also rejected my package, advising me it was "media mail" and was inappropriately labeled. Confused (I was mailing the package for my husband and didn't label it myself), and busy for the rest of the day, I had to hire a baby sitter the next day and went to the Odd Fellows location where they very nicely asked how they could help me. They examined the package, said it was clearly not marked media mail, then said there was nothing wrong with it at all and was ready to ship. So, my package was a day late, and I wasted 2 hours of my time on a busy work day. Just a heads up, I have also heard terrible things about the Rivermont location if you want to ship more than one package every year. Just laziness and incompetence. I would skip any location but Odd Fellows if I were you.

It portrays a time when government was more accessible to the people, and people were more a part of government decisions. I love seeing these old courthouses. Many of them have lost their surroundings, but this one still has buildings around it. It makes for a living downtown area, heartening back to yesteryear. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
