This totem pole like sculpture is located on the side of the UIndy library (to the right). It is part of UIndy's Sculpture Walk, sponsored by Fifth Thirds Bank. You are able to pull up a map of the 20 plus sculptures online and make a day of visiting each piece.
This piece was created by Catherine Schlebecker. I don't know the pieces back story but what I saw was what appeared to be white bands that looked like floral wall paper alternating with green flower pots, that appears to get bigger the higher they get. All the pots have a basic image of a persons face inside of a square against a colorful background.
I must admit that is not my favorite piece in the Art Walk. It has too much going on for me and without a backstory, I am lost. But hey, it's not my taste. You may like it though. Who knows?
There is a small placard on the ground next to the sculpture that has its name and artist on it, along with a QR code that was meant to be scanned and would give you more information about the piece. However, when I walked up to the sculpture the placard had broken out of the ground and was laying next to the sculpture. I ended up putting it back in the ground as best I could. I doubt it will last though.
Being that the sculpture is located on the UIndy campus there is a lot of parking available, however, most of it requires a parking permit. I just parked in an open spot, got out and took a closer look. I was not in the spot long.
As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful pieces of public art on campus, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. As I previously mentioned, you could download the Art Walk map that is online and make it a half a day or so. read more
