If you happen to live on the Oxford Road side of Victoria Park, or are just stumbling out of A&E at Manchester Royal Infirmary, then Florida Fried Chicken is in all likelihood your nearest fast food emporium. Luckily though, as takeaways go, it is a pretty good one. The selection on offer here is, as you might imagine, largely chicken-centric (although there are veggie and beefburgers available.) Wings, pieces, nuggets, fillet burgers are all on the menu, 'carefully prepared to an authentic recipe from Florida USA.' The recipe, which seems to involve flouring and deep frying, doesn't seem to have much of Floridian twist - there's no hint of key lime pie flavour.
Still this is real chicken, not cardboardy reconstituted innards. It's red hot, tears apart nicely and is salty and greasy just like you don't want to admit you like it. If you like your chicken with a kick ask for your chicken burger spicy - they dip it in their own 'chicken sauce' which is a lot more delicious than it sounds.
Florida is a little pricier than some of the chicken shops on the nearby curry mile (with Kansas Fried Chicken's undercutting presumably a hangover from their American civil war rivalry) but when it comes to takeaway fried chicken I would always err on the side of reassuringly expensive. read more
