THE VERY WORST!!
I've been taking buses from the North Orange County area to the Las Vegas area for years - from back when there was the Fun Bus, CoachUSE / Valen line, to the more recent LuxBus, Megabus and finally Flixbus. I have never had as horrible an experience as I did with Flix.
I was told about Flix (NOT recommended, just that there was something new in town) that went from the ARTIC station in Anaheim to Las Vegas. My mom lives in Henderson (a bedroom community next to Vegas) so I go there at least once a year. In the most recent years, I've been taking MegaBus and found them to be pretty good, especially for the price.
However, looking into Flix, I saw that they listed Henderson as a stop. I was delighted to see that the stop was about 10 min. from my mom's house - if she couldn't pick me up, then a taxi or rideshare wouldn't break the bank. (After all, I was using MegaBus rather than Lux because of the price). The only drawback was that the only time available for arrival to Henderson was 1:05 AM, and departure from Henderson on my trip home would be 5:50 AM. Certainly not the times I would choose, but since they were the only ones listed, I reserved it (after making sure my mom was OK with those odd hours).
I was able to purchase the ticket with ease online, printed out the ticket, including a page with a QR code and a map of the general boarding area, as well as the luggage tag. So far so good. However, the day before the departure date, my roommate had found Yelp reviews that said that the bus sometimes cancels with very little notice, and does not refund. I called customer service with my concerns. (Not any questions, just to let them know that I was aware of some bad record of their company).
I found th Flix bus outside the normal ARTIC boarding area. Right away, something was odd. The bus driver claimed that he wasn't allowed to touch any of the riders' luggage due to a past lawsuit. While it was weird, I thought "well, there are frivolous lawsuits after all" and let it go. He scanned the QR code and told me to sit anywhere behind the first 6 rows which were reserved. The ride was uneventful (though it did make many stops, and the one rest stop was not announced so I didn't even know that's what it was). Finally, we entered Vegas, dropped people off at Caesar's Palace, and to somewhere in Downtown Vegas. I remained on the bus since my destination was Henderson, NV. The bus driver asked what I was still dong there. I said I was headed to Henderson, at which point, he said "This bus doesn't go to Henderson." WHAT???? He explained that I must have gotten on the wrong bus. I said "but you scanned the code." He said something bizarre like "Oh that just tells me where I'M going, not where YOU'RE going." Huh??? Then, he said the bus I was supposed to be on would have come later. And then in the same conversation, said there was a Henderson bus running in the daytime. I asked "Well, what am I supposed to do now?" "You can get Uber."
So, here I was, after midnight, alone, in Downtown Vegas, dragging around a suitcase, feeling like I had a giant target with the words "ROB ME" painted om my back. I asked a Casino if I could use their phone and was refused (my cell was out of service area for some reason). As I had never used Uber, I didn't have the app. I finally got to a spot where I could make calls and download the app (I had very little juice in my phone by then). Luckily, I was able to leave a message on my mom's landline, and then got an Uber ride. With tip, the ride was $30. Not a bad price, but something I would NOT have had to play had I been able to get to my destination.
When I got to my mom's I was still pretty upset. I called customer service. They asked for my booking number and in a little bit confirmed that the but I had taken was SUPPOSED to go to Henderson after all!! At best, there was a mistake / misunderstanding. At worst, the bus driver lied, and just decided that one passenger (ME) just wasn't worth the time and gas. So he just dumped me in Downtown.
While I had some doubts, I decided to give them a chance and use them for the return trip, but spent my otherwise good visit with my mom worried about 1) would the bus come pick me up and 2) would it take me back to Anaheim or just leave me in L.A. and expect me to find a ride home On the morning of the departure, I called customer service to make sure that the bus would arrive. The rep confirmed that the bus would be there at 5:50 AM. My mom drove me over (the stop was outside of a WalMart) and we got there pretty early. It didn't arrive in time, and so I called them again. They said it would be an HOUR late. So, I waited again. Then, called again when it again failed to arrive. They promised it would be there in 30 min. Then, soon after, I got a TEXT telling me that the bus had been CANCELLED.
I reserved a trip home on MEGABUS for later that morning. Got home fine. read more
