Flip Hair Salon is a clean, well-maintained salon in a convenient location. Street parking was a bit busy, so I had to park a little farther away, but I was still able to find a spot. I saw Yvonne, who was friendly, listened to what I was looking for, and was very consultative in helping me get the perfect haircut. Prices are reasonable, and the overall service was great. Would definitely recommend for a quality cut in a welcoming space! read more

Flip is a stylish and friendly neighborhood salon. I came to Jill with a disaster haircut from another salon which she corrected so that my hair would grow back in neatly. After some growing out time with 3 haircuts along the way, I'm happy with a short bob that suits my very fine hair. Jill is professional, friendly and gives a beautiful blow-out. Pricing is reasonable for excellent service. read more

This was my first time there. The people were nice, and the products I liked. The cut, however, I was not thrilled with. I asked for long layers (b/c I have wavy hair so I need framing), but that is not what I got. My hair is pretty much one length, and it does not look good. Why I am giving the two stars is because I called a week or so later and left a message to ask if the stylist could fix it. No one called me back. Even if they called back to say no or to say yes, but they would charge me (which I don't think they should), I would've felt at least they take customer concerns seriously. read more

I decided to cut my hair myself and of course botched it. Flip salon across the street from me in lower mills. Went in to inquire the soonest I could get appointment. Luckily there was a cancellation and just waited 15 minutes. Shannon did exceptional haircut. It's just perfect. I made my next appointment. Very pleased. Highly recommend. read more

Had a cut with Ciana. I told her what I was looking for and she delivered to a T. She understood my hair, explained her process well, and gave me the exact cut I was looking for- apparently also the one my husband was also looking for judging by his reaction. Thanks so much, Ciana! I wish you much success at Flip. read more

Visit Flip Hair Salon and you will find a chic, warm and inviting salon with extremely courteous staff. Kayla cut my hair. She really took the time to explain the pros and cons of different haircuts and helped me decide on the best one for my lifestyle. By my lifestyle I mean sleeping through my alarm and rocking a ponytail at work and testing the limits of dry shampoo. Their online reservation system is the absolute best. read more

I have been to a ton of salons on Newbury Street over the last few years, but I have never found "the one." Who knew that I would find the "salon love of my life" in Milton?! I decided one random morning in January to chop off 8-10 inches of my hair. I didn't have a stylist I trusted in Boston, so I figured I would take a chance at the salon not too far from where I live. Flip kind of flies under the radar - they don't really advertise anywhere and their location is on the ground floor of an apartment building. That being said, it is definitely the best kept secret in Milton. The salon is small/intimate, but impeccably clean and decorated with sculpture by local artists. The front desk associate is attentive and courteous, always offering to take your coat or get you a drink. My stylist, Kerin, definitely gave me THE best haircut of my life. She really took the time to consult with me: where do I place the part, how much time do I want to spend styling, texture, length, etc. Short of living with me for a day, she really learned everything about my hair before she started to cut it. The result was a cut that looks fabulous both curly and straight, that blows out with ease, and that I still receive compliments on even 3-4 weeks after the cut. They sell Matrix products and although I have never been one to purchase salon-brand products, the stuff really works. Plus, they seem to have a lot of discounts on their products (2-for-1, etc), so you can't really go wrong there. Please note: they will NOT aggressively sell the products, but once you try them, you may get hooked. They have an online booking system (haven't tried yet) and their website is really minimal, but that's fine by me. Their cut prices are very reasonable $50+ (mine is $60, I think) and they're open until 7pm during the week, so you can make your post-work appointment. So now the secret is out - Flip is without competition or equal. You will be happy to leave your boring, overrated Newbury salon behind - trust me! It was love at first cut! read more

Flip Salon measures up to the reviews. I'm with Kristin G., the service and prices here make it a clear winner over going downtown for a haircut. I recently saw Michelle for a fairly simple haircut and a few things really stood out to me. First, *zero* attitude which is really important to me. Second, attention to detail: I felt like Michelle really knew what she was doing because she gave me a good consult before the cut noting how my hair grows and the like. She also gave me a head massage during shampoo which is standard at most places, but has not happened at the place in the South End I had been going to. Michelle was also very personable without being overbearing. We didn't have to be talking constantly. At my other salon, the stylist was talking so much that I felt like my hair wasn't the focus at all. Michelle is clearly putting her best work into your cut and you can really tell. Logistical notes: tips are in cash or check only which is a minor bummer, but important to remember (I barely had enough for the tip). It's right near the Central stop on the Mattapan high-speed line so easy to get to. There are a few parking spots behind and street parking as well. Also, I adore online booking so they get extra points for that too. read more

I have had 3 back-to-back terrible experiences with haircuts and colors and Kerin SAVED my hair. I was super apprehensive to try a new salon and a new stylist, but as soon as I walked in the door, Kerin made me feel so welcome and comfortable. She sat me down and had a consultation with me before even touching my hair (we discussed her recommendations for my hair with regard to cut and color, and I was able to give my input in too which she was super receptive to). Throughout the entire cut and color, she made sure she wasn't pulling my hair too hard, made sure I was comfortable throughout, and wiped my hair dye off my forehead after applying it (my last hairdresser never did that!). She picked the most flattering color for my hair and gave me the best blowout and cut I have had in years. I wish I could give Kerin higher than a 5 star review, she was amazing! read more

My new salon. Flip opened a few months ago. The salon is tastefully done with neutral walls, hardwoods, big windows and a fresh feel. I recently had my second haircut with Michelle. She takes her time and always provides pleasant conversation. She also cuts off exactly what I want, which is reassuring for a long haired gal to not be in scissor-happy hands! The vibe is very relaxed, none of that snobby stuff and I also like up-selling pricey products is not a priority, which I have dealt with in other salons. I believe the owner owned a place on Newbury Street and opened his own place out here. Prices are reasonable for the quality. My cut is $50 which includes the finished blow dry. The parking in the area is free and easy, no more worrying about meters! read more

I had a haircut and color with Kayla. I walked into the salon with an almost shoulder length blunt bob that had recently been cut elsewhere. However the previous hairstylist did not give me the slight inverted look I wanted (slightly longer in the front, shorter in the back). I showed Kayla lots of pictures of what so wanted, explaining that I'm happy with the length in the front and don't want it touched. She acknowledged this and said she won't cut the length in the front to achieve the slight inverted look. I checked in with her several times throughout the haircut reiterating that I was already happy with the length but just wanted a few layers in the back. Every time she acknowledged she knew what I mean. I felt the first cut at the back of my neck and thought 'oh that feels a little short' but trusted she knew what she was doing. I was turned in the chair with my back to the mirror so could not see what was happening. It felt like a lot of texturizing going on. When she took out the buzzers and buzzed the back of my hairline I knew it was all wrong. She chopped ALL my hair off in the back, with a ledge like a bowl cut, and gave me two long disconnected strands near my ears. She cut my hair in a pixie cut in the back and a bad one at that. The worst haircut I've ever had After I cried (haven't cried over a haircut since 1988 by the way) I complained to the owner. He tried to 'fix' it by blending the chunks and ledge a bit. Even he said it was a bad haircut and way too short and not flattering. She tried to say it was because I put my coat on and it touched my hairline and moved my hair. WHAT?!?! The owner made her watch as he tried to correct it and told her new techniques to use. He refunded my money $250!!) in the form of a salon gift card It's been 2 days and I'm still so so upset over it. I'm embarrassed to walk outside and have worn a hat for the last 48 hours. I don't understand how someone can say she understands what you want and agrees to it and does something completely different and also does the exact things you told her several times not to do. The only thing I can think of is that she talked a lot and was so absorbed with what she wanted to say that she just wasn't paying attention to what I wanted or what she was doing. (she I would expect a cut like this from a mall hair salon. or SuperCuts. Not from a place like Flip that's supposed the have good stylists. see read more

My family is new to Milton and both my girls wanted hair cuts before school started. I wanted to find a local salon and after looking up a few places, I decided to give FLIP a try. The owner, Steven, is super nice and his shop is beautiful. Both my girls have curly hair and I can honestly say that this is the first time that I LOVE both of the girls' hair cuts. Kerin and Kayla are absolutely wonderful. They took the time to find out what each girl wanted and were spot on. They're happy. I'm happy; and their hair looks super cute! I've found my new salon! read more

Had foil highlights done by Kayla, who's professional, sweet, very thorough, and explains things well. Quality color and blended highlights with the old. This place aint cheap, but I'll bite every few months since it's so close to work! read more

I picked Michelle based on the yelp reviews so very disappointing that I have to leave a bad review, I was a new client of Michelle's, the first time I went I asked for a bob, but wanted a drop style bob with a definite line short at the back and long at the front, what I left with was an extremely safe and boring bob, but the cut was ok just not what I had asked for so I booked another apt and thought I would give it another try. The second appointment I went for. I had a video clip of the hair cut I had wanted. I asked Michelle if she thought she would be able to do it, I explained I felt the last hair cut was very 'safe' and she explained that with new clients sometimes you don't want to go too edgy because it was hard to know how far they wanted to go. I also explained that it had to be easy to manage as I had kids and no time to style on a daily basis. To say its the worst hair cut I have ever had is probably an understatement, the layers are complete different lengths on both sides, they don't blend into each other and it cannot be styled easily, or for me I cant style it at all, the back layers stand up high they are so short and I have to pat them down with water a couple of times a day to stop them riding up. I cant even tie it up to mask it, I would like to add that I asked her before hand if she thought it could work and she ensured me it could, When she first dried it , it looked really thick and had extra body in it and she then informed me that my hair was thicker than the picture/video (which she hadn't mentioned until now) and that should could take more weight out of it if I wanted too. She cut some more into it and then straightened it so when I left the salon, although it looked nothing like the video clip, I told myself it wasn't that bad, that was until I washed it myself I have tried on a daily basis to get it to look somewhat decent but its too hacked to do so. I am sorry I had to leave this review but as I booked Michelle based on all other reviews, I felt it was necessary. Safe to say I wont be going back , not even to risk having it 'fixed' read more

FLIP is even more of a magical place (Steven has been doing wonders with my hair for many years and I followed him to Milton from Newbury Street-would follow him anywhere!) now that the holiday decorations are up. If you have not discovered this gem, hurry up! Steven gained 3 new clients from compliments I received from them on my cut and color. Now they are huge fans too. And the whole experience is so pleasant. Calm, relaxed. Like going to a spa. read more

I have always liked this place but my work schedule is unpredictable so I often book a day or two before, which you can now do online, yay!...until I showed up with my confirmation and was told that just wasn't possible, there are no appointments, blank stare. No apology, no attempt to remedy, just a death stare and then some incoherent babbling about maybe I can look at some other day I don't know when. I get it technology screws up sometimes but come on, at least pretend to care that i got childcare for this and you blew me off. read more

I have lived with bad or subpar haircuts for 20 years, but Kerin has saved my hair. Fine, thin, stick-straight - I thought it would be a grand idea to have my cousin try something I had seen in a video -perming with curlformers. The curl is pretty and beachy, just what I was after; however, the mesh pattern of the curlformer transferred onto each hair shaft, giving it a coarse and frizzy appearance. Kerin has managed to make even this mess look decent. Anyone with thin and fine hair knows how easily a cut can go wrong. Mine usually looked hacked at and uneven no matter how many highly rated stylists I tried. To have found Kerin so close to home is a huge relief. When I take the time to blow it out I can almost forget the horror show I created. Plus, easy on-street parking, a friendly and helpful receptionist, and easy, unobtrusive computer reminders and confirmations. read more

Visited Flip Salon this week, as I needed a cut and foil for a sudden job interview. However, I was in bad shape, seriously! I had honestly an extremely bad hair cut 3 hair cuts previous, six months ago, where the two subsequent cuts after the bad one, really didn't do much to fix the issue. Yes, it was a groupon deal - NOT WORTH IT! This means it left me with a terribly imbalanced cut on my head, which was very hard to deal with every day. It was really impossible to style in a way to hide it, it was just obvious no matter what. I met with Steven and explained what had occurred in the past 6 months. He examined my hair to find my explanation justified, he was able to locate the odd short pieces of hair throughout the cut. What I really appreciated it that he spoke candidly about the situation. He didn't promise this one cut could get the job done either, though I was very open to him doing whatever it takes to get the hair cut back to a normal, at least balanced look. He began with what he called a rough cut, then did the color, then another cut to refine. Wow, Wow, Wow, Wow WOW - on all fronts, wow. His approach is so artistic, I was so impressed with how he honed in on the shortest piece, and created an entire hair cut around that, in such a way, where the haircut is totally back to normal - meaning it's an extremely well executed cut, balanced, and actually totally hot and sassy. I really like it, and am extremely impressed. The color is bright and lovely as well. I say since he's the owner, if this the standard he sets for the salon, I would be happy to give any stylist in the shop a try! I've found a new salon! Hope this helps the seekers. read more

The salon I tried before Flip caused serious damage to my hair, to the point where I couldn't color it for 6 months because it was so fragile. I was very nervous to let anyone touch it, saw the great reviews on Yelp, booked an appointment with Kerin, and couldn't have had a better experience. First impression, the salon is clean and cute, and the people are warm and friendly. During the consult, Kerin really listened and completely understood what I was saying, and she gave me the best color and cut of my life. Since I had inches of natural root followed by inches of hair that had been bleached to death, I couldn't believe it when the color came out perfectly even - I could have cried I was so relieved. It's been 6 weeks but the cut and color still look completely fresh, and my hair looks so healthy. I loved everything about the salon, Kerin is magic! read more

I've been looking for a salon in the Quincy/Milton area for a while now- I was previously going to a salon in the city, but was tired of the parking hassle/lack of T access/ attitude. I'm SO glad that I found Flip. It's clean, tastefully decorated, and relaxed. My hair can be very difficult- it's super curly, and I wear it both straight and curly- so I was nervous about finding a stylist who understood. When Gail walked over, I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief- she and I practically have the same hair! I got a cut and a single-process color, and everything turned out GREAT. This is definitely my new spot! read more

Love love LOVE this hair salon. Staff is very friendly, complementary coffee is awesome and the services are fantastic. I have gotten by hair cut and colored by Michelle and have always loved the outcome. She is very sweet and will give professional feedback on any hair ideas I have. I recently got a blow out with Kayla and I have never had such voluminous, sexy hair! (Side note: I have gone to the blow out bars in back bay and while my hair looked nice, it only lasted for an hour- 2 hours max) I seriously felt like I had a wig on as my hair has never been that gorgeous! Normally, my hair cannot hold a curl or falls completely limp after a blow out, but she made sure to put extra product in and style it in a way that my hair held through the entire night. Yay for Kayla! Though I haven't been to the other stylists (yet) I have heard rave reviews about the others as well. Kerin cut my co workers hair and it looked awesome. Visit Flip Hair salon, You won't be disappointed. Steven is the best, love this place.

Their online booking system is super convenient, but their staff is incompetent. I modified an appointment over the phone and made the mistake of trusting their staff to do it correctly. Surprise! They got it wrong. They also don't allow tipping on cards, which is inconvenient. read more

Michelle was fabulous. She was professional and friendly, and made me feel comfortable. The cut was wonderful and I instantly loved it, not to mention that it did a great job of eliminating split ends and making me feel like my hair was refreshed and healthy. Best part is that this salon is practically down the street. My only regret is that, at a starting price of 50$, the price point is a little steep for me. If you have the budget, though, the wonderful staff at Flip won't disappoint. Thanks, Michelle! p.s. FREE BANG TRIMS help offset the price of the haircut, since your cuts last much longer. I first went to Flip Hair Salon in the spring when I was referred there by a friend. I had just moved to the South Boston area and had experimented with various hair salons with no success. I just couldn't find a place where I felt comfortable and left loving my hair...until I came to Flip. Kerin was my stylist and she did an amazing job! She was very attentive to what I wanted and took into consideration my hair type before beginning to cut it. She really took her time as well; I did not feel like she was rushing at all. The end result was the best haircut I have ever had, and it stayed that way for weeks after! Because I loved my haircut so much, it was without question that when I decided to get my hair highlighted for the first time that I would go to Flip. I was extremely nervous to color my hair and expressed this to Kerin. She was diligent about picking out the right color and told me exactly what she was going to do and how it would look after. Needless to say, my hair looked awesome and ended up exactly how I imagined. I am still getting compliments weeks later! Flip Hair Salon is really a cut above the rest. Their staff is talented and personable, their salon is impeccably clean and well-decorated, and you leave loving your hair! read more

Let's just say for the past 5 years I have only allowed one person to cut and style my hair and that is Michelle! Michelle is extremely talented and a wonderful hair stylist. She truly cares about her clients and their hair. Since seeing Michelle she has been able to restore my hair and has given me the knowledge needed to style my own hair at home. I leave Flip knowing my hair is the best it can be and its because of Michelle. Not to mention everyone at the salon is amazing. They recognize me, ask me how I'm doing and make sure I am comfortable. Anyone looking for a new hair dresser should go to Michelle! Just got a perfect hair cut by Paul at this Salon. Love it!

I agree completely with Julie R.'s comments on 5/9/13. Based on her Yelp review I made a same day appointment with Michelle. Easy to find location, easy and free parking, and a warm friendly confident greeting w/a handshake from Michelle were only the beginning to a terrific experience. Michelle provided excellent consultative services as well as gave a very relaxing wash and a fabulous cut. She is also a colourist and I would not hesitate to give her a try with this at some point. I am often here from out of town and am glad I have a trustworthy salon and stylist/colourist I can rely on when I am here again that won't break the bank. I have already recommended her and Flip Hair Salon to others, and now to Yelp! read more

I booked a one process color and cut with Kerin after a disastrous highlight job with my regular hairdresser. I came in with a picture to show her what I wanted. I've been to this salon twice now for a cut and color with Michelle. The first appointment I made by phone and the 2nd I made online. I like that they offer making appointments online. However with both appointments I still had to wait about 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. My first cut was great. The color didn't cover my grays but Michelle did offer for me to come back for a redo. I never did because with four kids it's a luxury for me to even find time to get a haircut. My second cut was good but not as great as my first. The color was better and it covered my grays really well. However it really dried out my hair. I'm not sure if it's because I have fine Asian hair or the product. I probably won't come here for a color anymore but will definitely for a cut. The prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly. They do listen and give suggestions and do what you ask for. The convenience of being located in Milton is a plus for me. They have limited parking behind the building and lots of street parking available. read more

Great salon, terrible stylist. I typically never write less than favorable reviews. If I don't like the service, I just simply don't return. However, I've never had a more terrible experience with a hair dresser. I feel bad for giving the overall salon a bad review (in all honestly, minus my experience with the stylist Kayla I would give the salon a 4.5). I came in told her I specifically wanted a "light trim to keep the length as along as possible." Not only did she not listen to want I wanted, she took inches off and put in uneven, short, unflattering layers. Anyone who has ever tried to grow out their hair knows how hard it is to gain even the smallest length. I understand the need to trim split ends, but she cut deep into healthy hair. It will now take months to repair and grow out the healthy hair she so carelessly cut off. I'm sorry to say, I would not recommend her to anyone looking for a new stylist. read more

I love this place! Friendly check in- I come after work and they always offer a glass of wine. I see Patricia for color- and she does a fabulous job. Color is just right and she recently added a few highlights and lowlights which had made the color much more natural without causing any damage- which I was worried about. She is lovely to chat with- lives in Milton- what more could you ask for? Good prices you say? Check. Newbury St service, neighborhood price. Parking? Yes, but I walk. Since others have posted that they paid $50 for a haircut and blow dry I think I was overcharged. I came in with clean wet hair and asked for a blow dry which took all of 15 minutes at the most and was charged $40.
