    Beautiful ... site #7
    Bill W.

A really nice KOA. The site we stayed in (#7) is in the first loop... up on a slight ridge above the entrance road. It has a nice large concrete patio, a steel frame/wood picnic table, and a nice level gravel slip for the RV. We're in a 19' airstream... our full rig is 40' long, and it fit so perfectly that we didn't need to unhook (only here overnight). Access is East from I-79... its up on a hill just off the exit. Although it's so close, you can't hear any noise from the Interstate. The drive in is a bit steep, but all kinds of RV rigs were there, including 40' pushers. We certainly had no problem with ours. When you arrive, you first enter a Days Inn lot... the same owners have the campground, so you check in at the hotel desk, which was quick- the left side is dedicated to the campground. Some KOAs have people on carts to lead you to the site, but those tend to be what I call the "industrial" KOAs that are massive and hard to navigate. This park has really clear signage, and is very well organized into smaller loops. This layout also provides more privacy, and gives it the feel of a more intimate campground. No guide needed. However, they do have a regularly-present security patrol who is friendly and whom also keeps things tidy. Because the campground is laid out as separate loops, it's nice to walk the dogs along the connecting roads. Despite the unusual checkin arrangement, this is a wonderful KOA, and one we will return to again when passing through the area!

We got to this park in the middle of the night, and had everything all pre-arranged with the office (including payment). When we got here, the roads were a bit narrow, but, even in the blizzard conditions, we were able to make our way (albeit very slowly) back to our lot. Once we got there, the pad itself is completely paved, and relatively level. The width of the pad is the exact width of our bus, therefore, you need to have a bit of driving skills to maneuver around here. We got one of the 50 amp sites (only 6 on property) and had a great view of the lodge and resort through our main windows. In addition, we have seen a law enforcement officer, plow truck, and one or two park vehicles drive by since we have been here. Oh yeah, we are the only people here now. One thing I will say about the park. The spots are not all that long, and there is really no reason for that. There is plenty of space at the end of the paved pad to continue on for 20-25 additional feet. I am not sure why they do not do that. Anyhow, on to the resort. The resort is a short walk across a beautiful foot bridge that extends over the water that surrounds the campground. When we got over there, we went to go book our spa appointments, and take a look at the indoor pool. You can read my other review on the resort for more information for that resort. Suffice it to say, that NOT ALL AMENITIES at the resort are included with the price of admission to the campground. During the winter months, it is $8 a day for up to four people to use the indoor / outdoor pool and hottubs. This is just a nuisance fee that truly serves no purpose. Just ask before you assume here. The rate during the summer is $15 a day for four people to use the pool or hottubs. The campground has beautiful amenities, and is really a nice place to stay and relax. During the summer months, the trees would be in full bloom, and would allow you to take advantage of the fire ring and nice gravel picnic areas on each site. This is definitely a place we will be coming back to.

The sites provide a raised wooden platform for your tent as well as a picnic table and fire pit. The park doesn't allow outside firewood but you can purchase small bundles (6-7 pieces) for a little over $7. Lots of wildlife to see, and the fishing is good. Our family will be back!

This area is known for the lake and for boating and outdoor recreation, so I understand that coming during a colder time probably put a slight damper on everything that should be taken with a grain of salt if you're reading this review. When we arrived there was no one in the office. It felt closed off and unattended. I wasn't able to go up into the lighthouse at all, which was super disappointing because for me it was the main draw. From the outside, the lighthouse was lovely to look at but I was really really hoping to be able to climb to the top. The rest of the grounds looked fine and this is definitely a place designed for overnight stays. I would definitely return but during the right season and when I am able to explore the lighthouse!

The location is only 20-25 minutes from the New River Gorge area which makes visiting the bridge or downtown Fayetteville a breeze. The gift shop has a large selection of items just in case you forgot something or need a souvenir. There is a large community firepit and pavilion with Adirondack chairs. Each full hookup site also has it's own firepit with chairs. The property is well maintained. Make sure you take a walk to the hammock area...this was the kids favorite part! We already booked a trip back for next year and cannot wait to spend more time in WV.

Photo Credits: Photography by 3Spade7Star…read more Five River Campgrounds exceeded my highest expectations and had the most friendly, kindest, and most wonderful staff & owners. The campground is famous for its sold out annual Bluegrass festival yet it is gaining attention for its powwow events. It was very easy to find the campground. We went to the Five River Campgrounds for the Third Annual Powwow in Parsons in June 2025. It was the most meaningful pow wow I ever experienced. The owners of the campground (Joyce & John) gave the sales of the tickets to the powwow to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) Memorial Grove. The non profit organization is involved in promoting awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Some of the performers gave their earnings to MMIW Memorial Grove as well. The Five Rivers Campgrounds owners welcomed us with open arms and immediately noticed us as photographers. We do a lot of philanthropic work in photography yet we rarely get noticed or thanked by many people for it. The owners of the campground were selling tee shirts and stickers with our photography. We had given permission to have our photography used to the performer we have taken the photo of and we were happy to see that he & the owners of the campground were displaying our photography on tee shirts and stickers in the campground shop. The campgrounds are beautiful with views of the mountain. Immediately staff helped us park and alerted us of the speed limit on the campgrounds. The powwow was held outdoors and there was an open air arena with a roof to provide shade. The stage in the venue had a shelter and a good view. You had to provide your own seating, yet we knew that beforehand. The fee for the pow wow was $10 for two days, and we captured the most memorable and beautiful photos we ever took on those days of performers in regalia against green foliage and the mountains. The powwow was small yet the amazing camaraderie and performers were unforgettable. This was one of the finest powwow venues in ambiance, performance, connections, and professionalism we ever experienced.

We discovered it last year by chance taking up a canceled spot with friends on Labor day, and returned this year the week before Memorial day. There is a significant difference between the place when in full capacity - obviously noise, crowd, and jet ski traffic on the lake. Also seems to be in transition from privately operated to state owned - when we visited this year none of the Marina services were operating which forces you to drive back to the nearest WV store for necessities such as ice etc. The facilities (shower, restrooms) were relatively clean (if you don't mind the crawlers, occasional mouse running across) but this was mainly for a lightly occupied camp, as mentioned above and indeed during the labor day weekend they were in much worst condition. So if you are geared for self sufficiency and pick an off time this is one of the most beautiful sites in VA, with an unbeatable cost/benefit ratio for a tranquil and relaxing vacation.

A great outdoor area for the camping novice…read more Bolar Recreation area is right next to Lake Moomaw and a few hiking areas. There are about five camp grounds here with each one allowing enough space for ten camping sites. There are camp sites both on and off the water and each site has a fire pit/cooking area. The exterior sites on the water are amazing! You have an incredible view, your own beach area and a lot of privacy. The interior sites are larger close to the bathroom/showers, but don't offer much of a view or privacy, but like I said, they are very spacious. This could have been a five-star review, but the person who runs this camp area was super rude to us one of the nights. Sooo, you're supposed to turn off your generator by 10pm, but ours was still going by 10:30pm and she let us have it! This was our first offense and we didn't know about the curfew. Take it easy Zelda! I would definitely be into another camping trip here possibly in the fall. I think I like camping now?!
