If you are riding the High Trestle Trial and need another watering hole and maybe a place to fill the tank? Flat Tire Lounge is a solid stop and could not be more convenient. They have ample bike parking for the average biking crowd out back and plenty of parking for the trucks and hogs out front. It is not uncommon to see the mix of leather and spandex at this place! They also have a self supported bicycle repair station with a pump! The place itself is an old steel kwanza hut, but with some ingenuity and creative craftsman they have converted it into a fun and 'divey' spot. Indoors there is a large expansive bar, a walkup counter to order food and plenty of high-top tables to spread out the patrons. While outside they have a massive deck and an outdoor bar and smokehouse. It's a great place to sit an soak up some sun and watch he bike, runners and even horse riders go by. We love the Moscow mule selection they have here, and always seem to need more than one. While we didn't eat this trip the food is always a solid choice. The waitress on this last visit was running and taking care of an ever growing crowd. She is calm cool and collected and even made time to check on us folks on the deck. If you are out and about and find yourself near Madrid, Iowa - make sure to check out this fun stop. If you want to really experience it when it is hopping, pick a night when they have a live band! Great spot to stop before, after or during a ride. Or just because! Convenient location on the trail and parking nearby. The day we stopped in they had a bloody mary bar which put you in control as mixologist. They had all the ingredients you could want! Not being a fan of tomato like the people I was with, I opted for a can of beer, which was perfectly cold. Service was quick and friendly. We had a great time. read more

Or just drop in by car. The people that come here are so friendly and welcoming! The owners and staff are extra nice! See you there for a fun time! This place has the perfect location. The High Trestle Trail runs right by this unique building. It stands out as it's resembling a airplane hanger. On the side of the trail there is a nice deck and lots of bike parking. Arrived for a drink as I had a nice long ride up from Ankeny. On a Friday Happy hour! $1 domestic draft & $1.50 draft beers. However I just needed something a little sweet so they did have a root beer. We enjoyed the atmosphere and filled up our water bottles before we got the trail again. There is a new grill just outside the door of the bar but the bar it's self has games and lots of places to relax. read more

This is a neat bar right off the bike trail. There's a big parking lot right near it for you to park and ride to the Trestle High Trail Bridge, which is what we did. And on our way back, we stopped for a beer. The lights and decor are really neat, as well as the airplane hanger inspiration! It was a good atmosphere. They did have a permanent-looking food truck there, but it was later and closed for the night. Great spot off the trail for bicyclists and anyone who wants a drink! read more

As I've reinvigorated my interest in bicycling lately, I've been utilizing the massively popular A2W - High Trestle Trail for amusement. The Flat Tire Lounge in Madrid is one of the marquee stops along the way. Flat Tire is located in an old Quonset Hut immediately adjacent to the bike trail. If you're spirits are failing and you require refreshment at the mid-way point on your journey to Woodward this bustling location will come to your aid. Food is available onsite, but consists heavily of deep-fried items served by an vendor outside. Cheese balls have been excellent at times and unpalatable at others. This place sees a lot of traffic from the biking crowd and seating can be difficult to acquire at times. They have a surprisingly good selection of microbrews and seasonal beers and emphasize Moscow Mules. My recommendation however is to drive the Steigl Radler. An immensely refreshing combination of beer and grapefruit soda that is the ultimate quencher for rides in the heat. read more

As a bar this place is great. They have a full menu dedicated to Moscow Mules. I personally like the cucumber flavored mule. I'm a huge fan of craft beer and they always have a big selection. Often they have a special, so you can try a new tap form around the state. It's tucked into a Morton building which gives it a great feel. Not classy or upscale. You can be sweaty from your bike ride, either motorcycle or bicycle and not feel uncomfortable. Enjoy either the cement patio to the west or the deck out back, both are awesome. Prices are what you would expect from a bar trying to make a living and stay open, very reasonable. The staff seem to be a little discombobulated, it seems that there is always one person who knows what she(I always try to get her attention when I order) is doing and everyone else is in training. High staff turnover? They almost always have live music on Sundays which is one reason we ride this trail and frequent this bar. The food has always suffered here. When it was the Radish cooking food it started out great and slowly went down hill. Now the Hotel Pattee has moved a rail car from Perry and remodeled it into a food truck kind of idea. A couple of years in and the same problem the Radish had. Food started out good, but it has turned into a mediocre at best. No consistency at all, one plate spot on the next under cooked and both on the same order. read more
