For a place that has been around for such a long time.. the food was.... Mediocre. The filet mignon was okay. They dumped a crap ton of onions and mushrooms on it then wrapped a piece of bacon.... Why. Just cook the steak and put additions on the side. The Ribeye was terrible. The fries were fast-food quality. The cheese balls were nice. But hard to mess up cheese. Our waitress was wonderful. Very sweet. Price was good. I can't argue with good pricing. I think this place just needs some love in the kitchen and love with its ambience. I'd give it a 2nd go but it's not something I'm pulled to. read more

The Flame, a great and immensely popular restaurant that perfectly hit the nail on the head with having amazing food and beyond friendly waiters / waitresses. Overall, it is a much spendier place to get food, but the atmosphere is very comfortable and cozy. I felt that I was able to easily sit down and be there for as long as I like without having to rush in any feeling. I've known many people I grew up with that loved working here, and some of them still work here to this day, not because of the pay, but from the actual enjoyment of working there. I highly recommend stopping in and trying one of the amazing dishes they'll serve up for you, and I'm almost certain you'll enjoy it. read more

Truly a great steak place. Their meat is flavorful and tender and the menu gives you lots of options in addition to beef. The Flame has been an Aberdeen place to dine since 1947 and when you step inside you can feel the old-timeness with the central bar and the multiple table areas which have grown around it over the years. There is a hustle with the mostly female waitresses taking and delivering orders and regularly checking in to see if all is OK. And it IS OK for sure. In town for business my workshop partner and ate here twice. The bar is excellent, the service and servers are super and the food is excellent. Prices are also pretty reasonable and the portions are good sized. I like steak with grilled onions...even with a filet which drives my wife wild. But she was not with us on this trip, so I easily ordered and got grilled onions and could have had mushrooms to boot. Substitutions are encouraged as well as permitted. Get what you want how you want it. They do it right. The locals are on to it, so if you have a larger than 4 person party, please make reservations. read more

Took my bf here when he came to visit last weekend on saturday night. Hunting season is still in full force around here so there were alot of hunters scattered here and there, there is a bar if you come in the side entrance from main street that you see first and you have to walk around it to get to the hostess table. We both decided to get steaks since we heard that this is the place to go for a good steak, I got the spinach salad with the warm bacon dressing which I enjoyed. We also got a glass of the featured wine which wasn't to bad. We both ordered our steaks medium rare and when the steaks came out they were closer to medium well. It was alright kind of bland, my wild rice pilaf tasted exactly like the uncle bens microwave minute rice..but I like it so it didnt bother me. I believe the bill was around 40 bucks at the end of the meal so it was pretty cheap but you get what you pay for, I preferred the steak that I got at Maverick's. Maybe one of the best steaks in Northeast SD - definately my favorite in Aberdeen. It's an old school establishment in a dark, musty-smelling building on main street. Bar is well stocked. Employees friendly. I've had steaks here but my favorite is the prime rib - it's tender, salty, proper fat content and the metallic iron finish of good beef. I wanted to like this place. But the soup was a cup of paste. We didn't even get our bread till after the meal came out and we asked why we didn't get any bread because everyone else did. She said they don't have any more baked but more was coming out. We were the first ones sat on like a random Wednesday night. How do you not have bread made? What's the deal with the vestibule here? When you're going in, you can't open the inner door unless you're standing outside with the outer door open. Kinda defeats the purpose of a vestibule, doesn't it? Service was mediocre. Took several minutes to be acknowledged before being seated. But no big deal. I ordered the ribs. They were good, if not a bit oversauced, but I guess I don't really mind that. The side salad was literally a plate of lettuce with a single little carrot and three onion slices. The mashed potatoes, while good, we're plain. I like this place and I'm sure I'll be back on a subsequent trip to Aberdeen, but I would also likely consider other options first. read more

Ordered the sirloin prepared medium, it was served closer to well done. I ordered an old fashioned made with makers, the bar tender didn't prepare it properly. I did not drink it and asked for it to be removed from my tab. She argued with me about the proper way to prepare it and claimed that they have been serving them the same way for 40 years, that's laughable! I found it odd that while sitting at the bar, the bar tender required that a server come take our food order. Last time I was in that place I had a Ribeye which tasted old and sour and wasn't cooked the way I asked. I had hash browns which arrived cold and tasteless. The salad wasn't bad but had better. All of the other reviews are spot on - the best steaks we've had pretty much anywhere we've ever been. The steaks came perfectly cooked as we'd asked for (medium) and had outstanding flavor straight off the grill. Presentation was very simple - nothing fancy, and the size of the steak was more than enough to fill you up. Service was very friendly and attentive. The desserts were also simple yet equally as tasty as the rest of the meat. Wish we had paid them a repeat visit on our second night in town instead of trying a different steak restaurant in Aberdeen and coming away severely disappointed. read more

Love the fact you can still go to the flame. Food isn't bad, house salad same as they were 20 years ago. The bad thing about the flame is there's no windows so it's like your trapped inside a cave. I know a guy who worked there as a chef. He said the owner is a horrible boss and that it's like 100° in kitchen. He said he worked his butt off and when he needed time off he was always denied so he finally said screw u and walked out. So anyways if u want to bring good things to a small town don't treat your staff like crap! They can bring you bad business. And put some dam windows in let the guest see! read more

My partner and I went to the Flame tonight for a celebration dinner. We had heard it was the best place in town for steak. We were pretty disappointed with what we experienced. First, our waiter was not very friendly and appeared as if his mind wasn't on his job. We ordered the steak dinner and fettuccine alfredo as I'm a vegetarian. She ordered a salad for one of her sides and I ordered the broccoli cheese soup for mine. Her salad looked as if it had been sitting since last week, if not longer. It was brown, wilted, the radishes were brown instead of white, and her squash in the salad was also wilted and brown. My broccoli cheese soup tasted as if the soup had burned really bad in the bottom of the pan. It also was way too thick and I couldn't even finish half. Her mashed potatoes were drowning in brown gravy. She said the potatoes were good once you folded them over to get the gravy off of it. Her steak was "so-so" but she did at least finish it. My fettuccine alfredo had super thick yellow alfredo sauce rather than the light, delicate, white sauce I'm used to. It also had a strange taste to it. I couldn't even eat that. The bread stick that came with it had been deep fried. Definitely not something I'd expect at a steak restaurant. The fair, yest, a restaurant not so much. When I complained to the waiter, it took him almost 10 minutes to come back and ask if I wanted the chef to re-make it. I said no. He didn't bother to offer to comp that portion of the meal, not even a small percentage-wise. We will never go back. read more
