Remarkably, the room I'm in is colder than outside, this may be because instead of an extractor fan above the door there is just a large round hole in the window with some chicken wire over it. I accept that learning a language is difficult and I'm sure the small Chinese lady speaks better English than I do Cantonese (Mandarin?) but when it takes several minutes to sort out a food order to which the end result is "no, we cannot do that for the menu is fixed" (or something like that), this isn't particularly helpful as the menu, as it is, is particularly uninspiring. China Kitchen offer exactly what you would expect to see on a Chinese take-away menu and nothing more. Which is a disappointment, having to choose between one bog-standard meal and another. We settled on a pork dish and a bean-curd dish - with rice! Free Prawn Crackers! As one would expect but they must have forgotten the Prawn flavouring as these were completely tasteless. My Pork meal was almost to an average standard, my rice, however, failed to reach those dizzying heights - and I was the lucky one. The ladyfriends meal was so substandard half of it was thrown away. Rice at it's dullest was the highlight for her as the bean-curd lacked any taste and the awful consistency made this meal untenable . Not that I'd go back anyway but the state of my bowls in the immediate aftermath and even now, the following morning, dictate that I'd be a fool if I did. It's not even cheap, costing about average for a take-away. There is better available nearby. To new experiences! Ian

It was that, or a posh place in Battersea which does upmarket fish and chips for twice the price. Hmm, which to go for? We opted for Earlsfield as we wanted the more traditional chip shop. Sea Horse is small and looks like a thousand other chip shops, but they really know what they are doing. The chips are peeled and cut on site and are fantastic. Big and crispy brown, but with a moist and juicy inside. This is down to the frying and the potato they use, but mostly that it's all done fresh and on site. As far as chip shop chips, this is as good as it gets. That is, unless you really need the soggy, soft chip you so often get. That has it's place, but this is a far superior chip, in my view. So the fish. There was none sitting in the warming window as they fry it fresh to order. Takes time, but worth it. We all had cod, but they do Skate and Haddock as well. The batter was crisp, light and nicely browned. Not too greasy as well. The fish inside was perfectly cooked and a lovely flakey quality. So often you get cod overdone and it feels more like mush. This was done perfectly. They serve it in a box, much like a small pizza box, and this helps keep it crispier than wrapping it in paper. Nice thought and it works. Also a lot easier to eat from if you are on the go. Like I said at the start, this place looks like a thousand other chip shops, but they do their cooking with care and passion. At the price, it's a great deal for this kind of quality. I was chatting with the owner while I waited, a lovely Turkish man. His wife and sons work there. Really nice family. I'm typing this on my flight back to Vancouver. I know where I'm going for fish and chips on my next London visit.

I ordered up a chicken nugget meal with fries and a diet coke which was always my favorite as a kid in the states. The smell and taste of nuggets always had put a smile on my face then, and I was always overjoyed when my folks gave in and bought me a happy meal, which was not very often. I walked over to a seat by myself and chowed down. My first thought was hmm.. nuggets in England are really bland. Well I paid for it so I ate them and my fries. I even won a free cheeseburger with the Monopoly game they are currently running. Hurray! About ten minutes later I was stuffed and ready to continue my shopping for the day when suddenly a jolt in my stomach stopped me on the street ugh. Maybe I walked too fast after eating and got a cramp? Mild pains continued throughout the day. I was still full and so I skipped dinner that night but went for an evening walk, hoping to walk off the fat and grease I just consumed. When I was about 5 minutes away from my house.. that is when it hit me. I thought my intestines had ripped open and I wanted to fall to the floor and cry but I knew my fate was far worse. I needed a toilet and I needed it fast. So I ran home in a panicked sweat, fearing I was about to ruin a perfectly good pair of pants Do you remember the scene in Dumb and Dumber when Harry accidently consumes all of those laxatives??? Well it was like that for a week and only yesterday have I had slight releif from it. I thought maybe it was food poison, maybe I got hepatitis or some other nasty disease. No.. I just damaged my poor digestive system and it will be a slow and painful recovery. I could probably even apply for disability benefits. Was it Mcdonalds? I know it was. Was this a necessary story to share? Probably not, but I tell everyone about my bowel movements so you were not spared. Could it happen to you? Possibly, but the fact that it even might, should discourage you. I may have just had a bad experience but never again I threw my free cheeseburger ticket in the trash hoping no one would pick it up and continue the vicious circle of intestinal desecration. My only way to save at least one poor soul
