I booked this appointment online and gathered all my paperwork according to what the website said. It was almost an hour and a half drive to get there, but when I arrive, there was still plenty of parking in the lot. One of the first things you notice walking in is the amount of security in the building. There are a lot of guards who were all friendly and helpful. When I entered, they directed me to the line for appointments and then I was directed through another doorway because I was there for my drivers license renewal. I was able to walk right up to a window and get taken care of. Apparently everything that says on the website for the paperwork I needed wasn't accurate based on what I needed in house. I ended up with several items I didn't need and I needed one more proof of identity. They asked if I owned a vehicle and if I had the registration on it. I acknowledge that and offered to go out to my vehicle to grab the paperwork. The woman told me that wasn't necessary and looked everything up online and told me she was able to verify me from there. I was sent into the waiting room with my number and found a seat easily. I was only there for a few minutes when my number was called. I went in the back room and into the window. I was directed too. When I handed her my paperwork, she took a look and said I was missing a second form of identification. I ended up going through a very long explanation about what I had gone through out front and the fact that the woman told me she had verified it and I would be good. Eventually, I must've said the right thing because she did something and then said I was all set. While I was a little flustered by this, the woman was very friendly and understanding. She also realized I was past due for the license plates on my vehicle. Apparently that paperwork went to my old address and never got forwarded to me. She was able to take care of both the registration and the license for me and I was very grateful. After I paid, I went and sat in the waiting room again and waited for them to call me with my updated drivers license. I went out to the parking lot and put the sticker on my license plate so I would be legal again, and I was on my way. This was one of the fastest experiences I have had at a DMV and I actually spent less money than I thought I would. While this was quite a long drive for me, I was glad that I could get it taken care of quickly and efficiently. I had heard from other people that the wait times here could be quite long so I was pleasantly surprised.

I am a white American woman and an attorney, and I immediately noticed the shift in their energy when I later approached the same clerk. I was treated with respect, even though I was less polite, while that man was aggressively escorted out of the building by security. The gentleman was correct when he told them they were required to verify his eligibility through the SAVE system. As an attorney, I can confirm that SAVE is the proper tool in these cases, but many DMV employees appear unwilling to do the extra work. This is unacceptable. DMV staff should not pick and choose who is treated like a human being based on race or immigration status. If the gentleman who was mistreated happens to see this, please know there are witnesses who saw what happened
