I had a membership here for a while when I lived downtown. While the gym itself is on the smaller…read moreside, the pool is a very nice size for laps and is kept at a good temperature for lap swimming (it really is the Goldilocks just-right, where I find most pools either way too hot or too cold). I always loved standing underneath the waterfall and having the weight of the water get a little shiatsu massage my shoulders and head, and the massage jets in the hot tub also do a number on aching muscles (although all the jets are positioned in exactly the same spot so it's hard to massage anything other than your exact mid) back. The locker rooms are lovely as well (it's an especially nice touch to have a swimsuit dryer so you don't have to carry a drippy suit back to your room or house), and it's always nice to treat yourself to a sauna after your workout. It doesn't take long for the sauna to heat up, and I recommend turning it on before you swim so that it's hot and ready afterwards. The pipes in the shower area could use a major overhaul though. It sounds like a massive road construction project is going on right above your head when you're in the shower. Also, there is zero suds factor on the shampoo in the dispensers and even after rewashing several times and using tons of pumps of the stuff my hair didn't feel clean afterwards. I asked to perform the buyout option to cancel my membership and I was fine with paying the remaining balance, but I still was forced and required to go back and forth through various emails and calls that stated that I needed to provide actions that I already provided, to initiate the cancellation. I was told to send an email with my name, account number, and stating I was canceling via buyout option yet received 3 emails stating that they were sorry but I was only eligible to cancel via the buyout option!?!??!?! They are stuck in a loop which seems 100% intent on forcing the consumer to experience the most frustration and agony imaginable to hopefully give up on pursuing the cancelation request. I've dealt with many service provider before that perform these shady tactics and ABC Financial is atrocious at providing support and an intuitive experience for their customers as a part of the vendor of PowerHouse. I strongly recommend not getting tied up with a service provider that is leveraging ABC Financial as a vendor if you need to have a smooth, normal experience at managing your account and services. There was also several spin bikes, commercial grade treadmills, ellipticals, and other cardio equipment. Great experience, I will be using this gym any time I am on the west coast of Michigan. Also, the owner is EXTREMELY kind and responsive. I requested a day pass and could have accessed the gym within 5 minutes. This is a great option if you are traveling and want to exercise.

No one ever wiped down the machines after workouts and if you wanted to you had to find one of the few bottles in the place that had a crusty old rag on it that you didn't want to touch and no access to fresh towels. The other problem is there is NO access to water except the bathroom sink and the water vending machine. It is a convenient location for a gym, but I'd rather make the drive to Niles YMCA.

So I did not. I approached her twice and she did not talk to me. The third time, she did and was extremely rude and accusatory of me running a business out of her gym. She told me she would speak to the other owners to allow me to record exercise videos and get back to me quickly. She didn't. I called the gym a week later and left her a message. She didn't call me back. Poor leadership and even worse management skills. I wouldn't go back to this place. Was like going back in time. In a bad way.

The Y has lots of group exercise classes ranging from Yoga to BodyCombat, and so far all the classes I've taken were taught by great instructors. Whether it's pickle ball, tennis, basketball, weight training, cardio exercises or swimming in the 25-yard pool, the Portage Y really shines. It is very affordable, and if finances are an issue, the Y offers lots of financial assistance.
