So…read moreif for some reason I have to miss it, like traveling makes me miss it, that shit drives me crazy! Back in September, we drove down to Arizona, the BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL! BEAUTIFUL! Flagstaff, AZ....for a dear friends wedding. We left Boise and I had to skip the gym that day, obviously lol. I missed the next day as well. Like a crack head does or a tweaker does...I was basically jonesing for the gym. Pathetic, right? Yeah, it kinda is. NEVER IN MY LIFE would I have ever guess that I'd love the gym as much as I do, buuuuuuuut.....ahhhhhh, I do! We arrive in Flagstaff on Friday. Before I left for AZ, I set up a temporary pass for Anytime Fitness. It's convenient if you're traveling. Gyms may be tiny, but like I said, for traveling, it's better than the hotel gyms. I go to Anytime Fitness on Saturday, September 7th. THEY. WERE. CLOSED. No staff! Seriously WHAT THAAAA??? So I immediately look for any other gyms and then I remember Flagstaff Athletic Club! The one of the westside of town, by campus....the one I worked at waaaaaay back in the day when I went to escuela en Flagstaff! My job there didn't last long, unfortunately...as I had to be to work at 4am. A student, having to work at 4am, when I spent every night at the NAU library.....I was a dork for all the right reasons, haha! So, as mentioned, I didn't last long. But it was fantastic to go back to this gym to actually work out! It's a beautiful club with amazing views from the weight room. I believe I added a pic when I checked in. Flagstaff is so beautiful. I've said this a million times...if for some god forsaken reason I had to ever move back to the pit of a state, I'd gladly live in Flagstaff. Ok, the staff was incredibly, incredibly sweet! 2 girls from NAU were at the counter. $15 dollhairs for a day pass, includes access to all of the gym, 'towel service's etc. I was trying to avoid paying for a day pass which I why I originally went to Anytime Fitness. But whatevs, it was worth it. I had an AMAZING work out! Their gym has so many machines, weights, etc that I pray my gym would get. A lot of FAC equipment is outdated though, if ima be honest. It still works, but this equipment was there when I worked there like...15, 16 years ago and I'm sure it's older than that. Anyone who goes there, knows it's hella old...the weight room is what I'm talking about. The cardio machines are newer and nice and the cardio room is massive, great views again, plenty of TVs etc. This is an exceptional gym ...even if I knocked how hella old their weight room and equipment is lol. If I ever go back to Flag for a visit AND....I WILL... I won't waste any time with getting an Anytime Fitness temp membership....I'll just go where I should be and that's at Flagstaff Athletic Club. (How's that last line?.sounding like something from a commercial haha! "ON THE GO AND NEED TO GET SWOLE?!?! LOOK NO FURTHER THAN FLAGSTAFF ATHLETIC CLUB! This review applies to both locations…read more FAC has both good and bad aspects. I'll try to be fair. The bad - if you're used to a new, shiny club featuring stainless steel open areas and shiny tile FAC is not it. The buildings were built in the 70s and despite some remodeling at the West club both clubs are dated and somewhat dreary. At times it seems they are not even trying to (shower heads in the east club are mismatched, come on), tile is dingy, and both clubs give a worn out vibe. Some of the gym equipment has seen better days, esp at the east. The good - the staff is very friendly, their classes are varied and a lot of fun, both clubs have both a steam room and sauna plus a jacuzzi, and they always seem to have an ample supply of clean towels. Overall grade B minus.

So much for forgetting your fob on vaca. Great selection of equipment, but many didn't work properly, especially the cables in the back right corner. But...again, they had three sets of cables, which is very nice. It's not that easy to work in with someone else, and I love my cables. Next thing: Music. Now, I'm not a prude by any means, but I guess I must be used to my hometown gym that plays ALL music. The two times I visited this gym, they played nothing but gangster rap. All that said, again, I still recommend this AF if you're in Flagstaff, and the hotel gym stinks.

Morgan, the owner, was very welcoming and friendly. Greg, the jiu jitsu professor, is the kind of black belt I aspire to be one day. Very detail oriented and also walks the walk. He's very open minded, which is refreshing in an otherwise dogmatic sport. His wife, Kayla, teaches women's only BJJ class that my wife attends. She's also a great teacher and is very competent. The fact that this gym offers a women's only class is a major plus. If you are a woman and interested in trying BJJ, the women's only class is perfect. All the guys I met in the classes were super friendly and welcoming. The monthly rates are great. 24 hour access is great.

Brand new when I joined, full of high quality equipment, the gym has everything you need for free weight and machine lifting, stretching and independent cardio. If you are looking for morning (before work) group workouts, this is not the place, but if you have your own workouts and a set of headphones you can use the spin bikes, fancy treadmills, elliptical and stationary cycles. The gym opens early- and the staff are friendly. They recognize all of the morning patrons after just a week or so of attendance. I never used personal training, daytime or evening classes. I also have never had an opportunity to use the climbing wall due to limited hours. All of these are offered as part of the monthly fee, and there are pay for classes and leagues just like other YMCAs. I recommend the Flagstaff YMCA. It's lost some polish over the years, but the Y remains an old standby for my strength and cardio. I think you would like it too.

This is a subtle form of surveillance and judgment. In a so called "judgment free zone". I had a staff tell me they would scan me, I told them no thank you. I wanted to scan in with the counter scanner and she said it didn't work... I wondered if it was broken why is it on the counter? Then another staff that just walked up scanned another person using the "broken" scanner... these staff are gross and invasive. Lying to customers the ultimate betrayal and the surveillance is discriminating. Get it together! They also stare at certain guests. They walk around the club and look just a little too long. I have literally only been here three times and won't becoming back, just warning people, if you want to be in an awkward situation and surveilled then go here, if you like feeling safe and relaxed don't come here.

Started out on the PT side with a torn rotator cup then a hip issue I thought would sideline me forever. A few months later transitioned to the Physio side and it's truly an investment in health, safety and aging even if there are times I leave with jelly legs. My husband goes now as well.
