There just hasn't been a review of the Curtis Hall Community Center in quite a while, and I thought it would be helpful to update. I'm training for a triathlon and needed an affordable place to swim 1-2 times a week. I I've gone swimming here a couple of times and I'm very happy with the swimming facilities. The locker room is.. a locker room. It seems well maintained and clean, which is all I can really ask for. The showers do turn off approximately every 30 seconds or so, but it's not a huge problem. The pool is 25 yards, and there are three lanes. I've only been in the early morning, but the most people I've seen at the pool at one time is 9 (3 per lane) and that worked out just fine. The gentleman who works at the front desk in the morning is friendly, and very helpful. He allowed me to try out the pool a couple of times before joining, which was really nice. The cost to join is $30 a year and there is a $2 per use cost for the pool. However, you can buy a card that gives you 7 uses for $10 -- well worth it if you ask me. I have no problem paying to help to support a community center. I will take a look at the rest of the facility one day when I'm not in a rush to get to work.

This location stays busy, and is mostly younger individuals that go here. Definitely a smaller PF and has limited equipment & they never seemed to have anything, like paper towels and cleaning spray. Also, since there is limited equipment & this gym is always packed, good luck not only getting a squat rack, but with any machine for that matter. There is barely any space to put down a mat to stretch either. One thing that I did like about this location in particular was that the music was always good, I will admit. Many of my visits here, I went without headphones & luckily the music being played on the speakers would be exactly what I'd play personally, so that was great! Another con, unfortunately, was one time I visited, I had finished working out and walked back to my car to see a parking ticket. I was definitely confused, as I did not remember seeing anything (at the time, not sure if nowadays they've added parking restriction signs) regarding not being able to park at that spot? No meters there either. Due to this experience, that was likely my last straw and I never visited again after this. Dale's style was exactly what I was looking for: he explains the theory behind what he is doing. He works with each person differently, depending on their goals (yes, even when working with multiple people at a time). He focuses on form and proper mechanics--even after a year I still have much to learn! Each workout is different and I usually leave every 45 minute session feeling like I put everything I had into it. A year later I am stronger, I have built a healthy habit and I'm continuing to learn--it has been a great match.

Corrections were delivered with a tone that felt less like guidance and more like condescension. At times, it honestly felt like the trainer was more interested in pointing out what I was doing wrong than helping me improve. I get that some people thrive on the "no-nonsense" approach -- but there's a fine line between pushing someone and shutting them down. Several times, I left class feeling worse about myself than when I walked in, and that's not why I signed up. A little empathy goes a long way, especially in a fitness environment where people are already vulnerable. If you're looking for a place that emphasizes progress and encouragement, you might want to keep looking.

I have done work with a few different personal trainers over the years. After a shoulder injury…read morelast year I decided to get back into personal training to help me strengthen my core and upper body. I specifically chose this gym due to several reviews that specifically indicated that John has experience working with people who have sustained injuries. I also really liked that it was a private gym and that street parking was super easy. John was able to accommodate me quickly and at my preferred 6pm time. He was pretty flexible and offered some good rates. I was a little apprehensive at purchasing 20 sessions for $1200 (and having to pay upfront), but the more you buy the less you pay per session and it seemed to me that this was pretty common among personal trainers. I had liked what he had to say at our initial consultation and so I decided to go for it. Unfortunately for me that was a big mistake, and my only hope is that I can prevent someone else from doing the same. - On the website it states you get a personalized fitness assessment that includes measurement of body mass index, weight and circumferences at every workout. I was NEVER measured, not even once, in the approx 10 sessions I completed. - It also states he will provide nutritional guidance. He did this twice. 1- Asked me what I had for dinner, I gave a good answer and that was the end of that discussion. 2- Asked me what I had for breakfast, and told me to add eggs or something protein rich as soon as I woke up. - Does not provide time for stretching or guidance on how to stretch at home. First time ever I have never received guidance on something so vital to weight training. I took it upon myself to ask questions on how to best stretch my shoulder and he did provide guidance but only after being asked and never again after that. - Constantly on his phone during the one hour work out. Not even just a check here or there, CONSTANT. I grew extremely frustrated and would call out to ask him if I was doing something correctly. As a professional, save an emergency, you should NEVER be on your phone while a client is performing exercises that could injure them. - My work outs also seemed very cookie cutter, and solely based on weight training. I have had many sessions that incorporated cardio and weights and asked him about adding cardio. He said it would come in time. Half way through my sessions and there was never cardio. It also appeared to me that I was doing all the same workouts as the guy in the time slot ahead of me. The workouts rarely varied, and if they did it was by one different exercise. (One session arms, the other legs). With that being said, John was cognizant of my shoulder injury in that he would ask how it was feeling and did not try to push too hard if I said it was hurting; or he would end the session early. The problem though is that my sessions were still not designed around my injury. I know that personal training helped John after his own injury but I feel as though he thinks everyone will respond like he did, when that is not the case, as all injuries are different. Add to that the fact that he wasn't watching closely the majority of the time, and there is a large window for error. So while he did ask those questions, they weren't enough. An hour of weights on a weak shoulder was likely too much and the whole session should have been more varied, in my opinion; and should have definitely incorporated stretching. As you may have guessed by now I re-injured my shoulder. I also pulled my other shoulder performing a sit up with a weight. I saw an Ortho specialist who recommended Physical Therapy and to stop my Personal Training. I have now started intensive physio for my shoulders. I told John about this and requested a refund. Although I didn't sign anything, there is apparently a paper on the wall that says no refunds, and he tells me I can come back at anytime. When I further stated that I was injured and there should be some difference (I am not just quitting) he said he would get back to me. He never did, so I texted him a couple weeks later. He did not respond again. To me, this is completely unprofessional and irresponsible. I am now at a point where I will cut my losses of approx $600 because I do not feel safe coming back at any time, even when I am rehabilitated. Bottom line: I do not recommend this personal trainer. Please don't waste your money like I did. I have had several other trainers who are much more professional and experts in their field who I felt safe with. If you do come here I implore you to only purchase a few sessions until you know what the sessions are like, but I am telling you, this is nothing compared to what you can get with a real pro.

She is a great instructor, always tweaking the formats to improve our workouts and eliciting feedback from members to ensure we are getting the most out of each class. She knows everyone by name and it truly feels like a community. I have taken both the boxing HIIT class and strength and conditioning class. Boxing HIIT encompasses circuits including boxing combos on the bag, alternating with HIIT (eg burpees, jump squats, jumping jacks, etc), with rounds of dumbbell work and abs mixed in. It is truly a full body workout. I took my boyfriend to a class and he was absolutely drenched in sweat by the end. Strength and conditioning is more of a traditional circuit format with alternating exercises focused on strengthening your arms, legs, back, and core. They also have boxing technique classes, youth boxing, and kickboxing classes throughout the week, and now sparring on Sunday. They just introduced women's only kickboxing class on Saturday morning which I am super excited to try out! Overall such a great addition to the JP community and one of my fav local businesses.

My instructor, Sam, kicks my ass every class without me even knowing. I don't really sweat during class but then my whole body is sore the next day (sorcery!). I had a private session first and then signed up for a pack of 10 TWS classes. The only thing I wished they had was a better scheduling system where I can go in to see which classes I've attended/missed. They charge for missed TWS classes, which is fine and I understand why they do that. But it'll help hold both parties accountable (myself and Boston Pilates) if I can visually see which classes I've missed and need to make up. There's no formal checkin process so I'll have to rely on memory or their words that I attended (or missed) a class. This is in NO way saying that I don't trust them, just that I think the scheduling system can be improved. An option to reload a pack of TWS classes and pay online would be helpful too!
