Nothing was caught (fish 1 -…read morehumans 0), but it was really OK, and I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in my camping chair and watching the fish jump in the air and the world passing by. A few other people were down on the dock casting for fish, others sat on the various rock formations sort of zoning out, and it was a real pleasure to see the children and parents sharing something they really loved. If the youngsters aren't interested in the fishing, they can come down and feed the ducks - such fun. The water is so clear you can see down to rocks and plants on the bottom and also nearest the dock flashes of the goldfish as they glide along (these goldfish eventually grow into some very large carp). There are evidently some sturgeon as well along with the rainbow trout, and also lots of ducks and other water birds (a few still with babies). Oh yes, lots of dragonflies - flashes of black and fiery orange red - add to the charm. People who fish welcome you right into their society and talk readily about their fishing experiences and how the big one got away and even why. This is a terrific family experience and for those who want to come out alone. The best time is to come early, before 7, and especially after the lake has been re-stocked, if you want to catch some fish. But like I said, it's a wonderful experience whether fish are caught or not. Give it a try. And remember if you don't catch any fish, you can hike back up to the shopping center above and get some breakfast. Not a bad day at all, in fact a damn fine one if you ask me.

His knowledge of the area, the fish, and the best techniques was unmatched, and he was patient in explaining everything to beginners while also offering great tips to more experienced anglers. You can he loves what he does, and that passion makes the experience even more memorable. If you're looking for a knowledgeable, friendly, and professional fishing guide who will make your trip both successful and enjoyable, I can't recommend Matt enough! We'll definitely be booking again.

However, we had the opportunity to catch and keep sturgeon only if it was between 44-50 inches; which occurs twice in a year. From beginning to start, Matt was super helpful with providing gear for me as it was my first time fishing. His boat was top of the line compared to the rest on the river that day. It had a hot water sink and very comfy chairs to sit in. He also had beers, waters on dec and had anti-nausea meds on board which was great for me since I was feeling sick. After 5 minutes, my boyfriend caught his first sturgeon that was 47 inches. And I caught one four hours later that was 45 inches. He allowed us to reel it in (which was a struggle for me, but worth it) and he took great photos after. We were the only 2 people that day to catch and keep our sturgeon. We couldn't have had a better experience and we got so lucky that day thanks to Matt! He ended up filet-ing our sturgeons and took 15 pounds of it home. It was the highlight of our trip to Portland. And we plan to come back in the spring once salmon season starts. If you're thinking about booking a trip with him, DO IT. You won't regret it!

"We've visited this fish farm many times, but this visit was extremely upsetting. The staff refused to give us the equipment we needed and spoke to us in a harsh, unprofessional way. When the owner came over, he was aggressive, told me not to speak, and asked our whole group to leave -- including our two kids (9 and 11) who were checking in with us, and even my daughter's Girl Scout group who had not spoken to him at all. He raised his voice at the children, leaving them very upset. Based on this experience, we cannot recommend this place.

The Best Fly Fishing Shop & Experience in Portland…read more NW Fly Fishing Outfitters is an absolute gem. From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed like an old friend. The staff is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also some of the friendliest people I've ever met in any business. Every visit leaves me with a smile--and way more knowledge than I had going in. I've recently taken a few of their classes, and I can honestly say it's the most fulfilling money I've ever spent. I did Spencer Pelham's Clack Attack class as well as his Intro to Fly Fishing, finishing with a float on the Clackamas River today. It was incredible--so many "Ah-ha!" moments where everything just clicked into place. While Clack Attack was a bit technical for my beginner skill level, it was packed with valuable info. Spencer is incredibly skilled, yet humble and patient. He teaches in a way that makes you feel comfortable and supported while still learning a ton. The way he tied the content of both classes together on the river made it all come alive. I should mention--I'm a 52-year-old woman and a recent breast cancer survivor. Getting back out there and doing something like this was emotional, powerful, and healing. Being on the water today felt like reconnecting with an old friend. We caught several beautiful trout and saw osprey, beavers, bald eagles, and more. It was a magical day. Spencer went above and beyond, not just today but every time I've spoken with him. And the whole NWFFO crew? They've created something really rare. From my second visit on, it was "Hey Jen, how are ya?"--the kind of warm, small-town vibe that's hard to find anywhere, let alone in Portland. If you're new to fly fishing or looking to level up, sign up for these classes. Don't be intimidated if you take Clack Attack first--it may seem over your head at first, but it will all click, especially after taking the Intro class. Throw in a casting lesson or two, and you'll be amazed how it comes together. Massive thanks to everyone at NWFFO--and especially Spencer--for making this journey so special. I can't wait to see what comes next.

To make a long story short, after a few minutes talking with Gabe my bro spent a great deal of money in a new set up. Being as competitive as we are I had to get a new set up too. I went back the next day and Zach sold me a NRX 7 weight 13-3 and reel. They threw in the line and everything behind it on the reel...I have to say that this shop and its people have truly made a huge dent in the fly fishing community in the PDX area and beyond. They are no longer acquaintances, they are now our friends. We see them often on the river and at fly fishing events locally and they are the most welcoming folks one could come across. I am so happy that I chose their store to purchase my gear in and look forward to the next time I see anyone of them out and about. Truly salt of the earth guys. Thanks for all you do for our community....Signed Ira.
