The restaurant is underneath the main shop, but it feels cosy rather than basement-y, with white walls and plush blue velvet curtains. We had some french people stay with us once, and they really wanted to try proper fish and chips, so we brought them here. They weren't disappointed - who could be with light, crispy battered haddock and fluffy golden chips on offer, with proper mushy peas and gravy that tastes like it's been made for a roast dinner? This place is quite popular and often has quite a big queue, never a problem though as the staff are efficient and service is spot on. Pretty consistent and always fresh food, with all the expected bits and bobs on offer. Only once or twice have I ever been let down by this place, think they had turned the cookers off a few months ago and was less than impressed with a lukewarm fish that I needed to reheat( I keep going back and that speaks for itself.

I also like to think of it as a very safe place, as it used to be the home of our local fire station, which moved just round the corner (and is now at the back of the restaurant) so very handy should the fat ever catch fire! Their fish and chips taste lovely and the restaurant is very welcoming and caters for small children. My son and I often get our fish and chips from here and I wouldn't go anywhere else.

A must for a traditional British Friday dinner and worth travelling to for the experience. The "chippy" has been owned and run by the same family for 44 years, with current owner, Claire Benson, taking over from her parents 9 years ago. Heart, soul and pride are clearly key ingredients. Crispy golden batter covers fresh, white, fleshy, tasty cod which pairs perfectly with deep fried home cut chips. Mushy peas might be a bit runny but are still good and complement the other ingredients well. Goes down well with a cup of strong, sweet Yorkshire tea!
