My purpose for today's visit was my nerdy train porn and it did not disappoint because it was full of action with 20 trains in four hours, what an hot spot of action. I mostly do food reviews but I'm going to leave a review for the Joliet union station for the rail fans who might look at Yelp for some info on this place which is probably very slim. For you rail fans this place has such a great variety of rail action with UP, BNSF, AMTRAK, METRA and NS trains flowing through the diamonds. The tracks go from N, S, E, and W with access to three passenger platforms out of the four coroners so there is plenty of access for the rail fan. AMTRAK, METRA and UNOIN STATION have the three coroners covered which is awesome for the rail fan. The bottom line is if your a rail fan and you want a photo/video shoot with lots of open access with out trespassing than this is a very cool place and worth the drive.

Since…read moreI was visiting the area for the first time, it was a challenge to find where exactly Union Station was located. I had to go to the police station and ask for definitive information on the address, since GPS wasn't picking it up. Upon arrival, I noticed that there were hardly any signs at all for the location itself. I figured out where to park, since the parking lot is directly across the street. When it came to receiving ticket information, the signs on the inside of the building were equally confusing. The employees within the station were busy at the time, so I wound up asking some of the locals about train schedules, etc. Would I return to this station? More than likely. Is it convenient to get to? I suppose. Its okay to me, yet could use improvement.

Trains I've been on are mostly on time with it's arrival and depart times. I'm used to physical tickets but tried the Ventra app and never realized how smooth that works too when staff comes by to check tickets. Trains can be a hit or miss. Some trains have power outlets while if you're an older model it won't feature them. Trains are primarily clean all around. I recently treated my wife on the Metra for the first time and she enjoyed one trip but disliked the ride there because of a lack of hand sanitizer. Joliet did a great job fixing the transportation center though I would like more busses to featured but you can't beat $1.50 to park there daily. The con is that it's in a bit of a sketchy area dispite it being next to an adult detention facility but you can't beat being in the heart of Joliet either. Hopefully this line gets extended in the future!

During rush hour it takes about 45 to get from one end to the city. No too shabby for rush hour! It's about $6 one way but prices depend on where you pick up the train. Monthly passes are good for regular commuters. The Ten-ride pass is nice for ppl like me who take it often but not everyday. They last for up to a year and buying in 'bulk' like that gives you a discount. Also, make sure you buy your tickets at the station!! The single rides are over $10 if you pay while riding! The station ticket sales people are only there early in the morning. They close shop after rush hour (5 am to 9 am) so make sure you get up early! Only thing is I wish they sold food and drinks on the train. They would make a killing too. I realize that it would need to be a pretty big remodel but that would be so cool! Coffee and pre baked stuff... Starbucks-esque.

This particular train only has 5 stops and hits Union station in about an hour. This is a very small station that doesn't sell tickets. You have to purchase them on the train. The good thing is you don't have to pay that $3 up charge to get your ticket on the train since Metra doesn't offer them at the station. The heritage corridor also only runs M-F, with the last train coming from Chicago to Joliet at 5:25pm. This is an express train. The other Chicago bound trains coming out of Joliet take about an hour & 1/2 to get where you're going. The Lockport station does have coffee and snacks you can purchase. The coffee is actually pretty good. Try the cinnamon vanilla nut! The Lockport station has no public restrooms so you better wait til you get on that train! Parking is also $1 a day. Make sure you pay or you will have a ticket on your car! The one thing that sucks about this station is coming home. There is only one entrance out of the parking lot depending on which side you park, and everyone is making a mad dash to leave. People aren't paying attention to what they're doing and everyone is everywhere. I just wait till they all leave. Then I make my departure.
