The First Settlers Lodge is a magical place. The rooms are large and comfortable, the common areas are warm and homey, and the wide windows all around the lodge provide stunning views of the forests, mountains and sky of this gorgeous northeastern corner of Maine. I stayed at First Settlers during mid-October, so the colors of the landscape were incredible. Denise and Wayne were extraordinarily warm, welcoming hosts who attended with cheerfulness and grace to our every need. The food was TERRIFIC- generously portioned, homemade, and so satisfying. I had a baked stuffed haddock and Apple pie for dinner, and a pile of French toast for breakfast. Denise even made yummy roasted vegetable wraps for our lunch to go! I can't recommend First Settlers enough. One of the best bed and breakfast experiences I've ever had!

I stayed at First Settler's Lodge in Maine and loved every minute of it! The atmosphere is so warming and comfortable and the food was exceptionally delicious. Their views from the lodge are absolutely breathtaking! I recommend their suite at First Settler's Lodge as it is 5 star!

One of many beautiful views from the Lidge grounds.

I reserve the 5 star rating…read more In order to get one from me you need to stand out. You need to want me thinking about returning almost as soon as I arrive. The Blair House most undoubtably deserves this rating, no question. A happen chance to find, we had to do a last minute drive from Halifax to St. Stephen and were too exhausted to make the return trip the same day. A combination of Tom Tom and Yelp said this little gem was less than 2km away from the border. No pictures, no reviews and no way of knowing what we'd find we gave a call. The owner David answered despite the lateness of the evening and said he indeed had one room available and we could come right on over. First off David may be one of the nicest people I've met in a long time. He didn't hesitate to spend a little time getting to know us even though it was well past "guest hours". At 9p at night he advised us to go out and find some food then return and take care of the paperwork...seriously who does that? The house. I won't even try to describe it. I can't do it justice. It's divine. Trust me. The room. We were given the only room on the main floor so I can't speak to the other rooms but this one was lovely. Queen size bed with super comfy bedding (the kind that makes you want to stay under covers all day). Extremely clean and stocked with those scratchy kind of towels you Canadians seem to love so much...oh the reason for the scratchiness? Yhea that's because they hang those towels out fresh on the line to dry all year round (as permissible). A lovely personal touch if you ask me. We woke up the next morning and sat down to a delicious home prepared breakfast of which David took before retiring the night previous. Didn't write a damn thing down and what do you know; everything came out just as we asked. You'll get your choice of grapefruit or fresh fruit cup (I had the fresh fruit with a dollop of greek yogurt). Then you'll either enjoy blueberry pancakes or a standard English breakfast of eggs, sausage, grilled mushroom, tomato and toast. Your meal will be topped off with coffee and a carafe of orange juice if you please. This place is the epitome of "Home sweet home". Other awesome things to know: * Tea is available 24 hrs/day * There will be a stash of cookies with said tea * This place won't break the bank (Summer rates are between $100-$120 / night) * Each room comes with a "faux" fire place * Cable TV/Wifi is provided for guest * Lots of nearby restaurants * The US/Canadian Border is less than 5 mins away.

I just noticed that there was only one review on this site. I have previously posted very positive…read morereviews for Blair House on TripAdvisor, but must not have done Yelp. It is a wonderful place to stay. It is very clean, comfortable, the breakfast is always outstanding, and Dave couldn't be more congenial. We stay here every time we go to and from Halifax or points further north. I highly recommend it.

As was the sunset: reds and pinks and oranges and golds. We couldn't have asked for a lovelier way to finish a day of hiking in Baxter. The property at 5 Lakes Lodge is beautiful; from the expansive green lawn to the tiny private beach, there are plenty of places to sit and watch the loons. The rooms themselves have been meticulously loved and maintained by the owners. It feels like staying in a (fancy) log cabin, only with a spa-like bathroom! Did I mention the views of Katahdin? Just wow. The only hiccup for us was with the hospitality itself. Unlike others' experiences, we felt that owner Rick was gruff with us. It took several back and forths just to reserve the room itself, after that we never received any confirmation email, and when we asked about whether he and his wife were vaccinated/what their masking policy was (considering Millinocket was considered a highly transmissible area at the time) he was quite brusque. Also, while the check-in policy said anytime between 3pm and 9pm, at 5:30pm we received a phone call sternly asking why we weren't there yet. Then, when we declined breakfast in the morning to sit by the water in the sunshine with our coffees, he was outright annoyed with us ("what do you mean you don't want breakfast?!"). Deb, on the other hand, was very friendly and a joy to speak with, but she also seemed quite surprised that we would want to be outside instead of their incredibly hot, closed-up kitchen (where the TV was on, news blaring) on such a beautiful summer morning. I believe these current owners tried to sell before the pandemic and didn't, so maybe we just met them at the wrong time of their BnB owning journey.

The bed was great, the in-room bath great- we just struggled with the owners. The man and woman here make great food and definitely maintain a beautiful property- however I felt reprimanded in every step I took. We had just hiked Katahdin and the car was full of crap, so around 9PM we went out and grabbed some stuff. The male owner came out and asked us what we were doing. Very aggressively. Just grabbing clothes man! We were being quiet and respectful, it was quite alarming. We got breakfast in their B&B kitchen before heading out, and again, the man owner was very cruel. At first I thought he was kidding around, but nope, he is just that mean. Also bad was asking privately the woman owner for an extra roll of toilet paper as we were out, and she berated me for using toilet paper in front of the entire breakfast room full of people. Several times. It was humiliating. It's a view that can't be beat, and I'm really grateful I got to stay here, but I can't recommend a place that is mad at having well-behaved human beings in their place. If you're gonna charge that much for a room, let your guests feel like they can exist without being a major burden to you. Like, what? Sorry.

Breakfast is always wonderful, and what delights me every time is that the people with whom we share the table are always interesting and delightful breakfast companions. The house is gorgeous inside and out and the hosts make you feel at home with helpful tips for what to do in the area and a genuine interest in your travels. The big breakfast was delicious and included fresh fruit, yogurt, toast, jams, ham and your choice of eggs. If you need to stay in the Fredericton area, do yourself a favor and look no further than Brennan's, you won't regret it.
