I went to First Settlement in Marietta with my father. This review is NOT about the physician but about First Settlement Orthopedics. First we were told to arrive 30 minutes prior to my father's appointment. Traveling 50 miles from Woodsfield we gave ourselves 1 1/2 hrs to assure we arrived on time. In the paperwork we had received in the mail, was a statement concerning parking. Basically it said to know where we were going and where we would park. I felt that was unusual, feeling that special parking instructions should be included with the paper work. Upon arrival, the parking lot was full but there was ample parallel parking on the street. Walking in the door, it was difficult to tell where we were to go as the signage was poor. On a positive note, the only restroom was as you walked in the door to the facility. On the downside, this appeared to be male/female, and for the office and surgery center.
When we entered the door to the physician office there was a sign in. Not too sure about HIPAA compliance because it asked for first and last name. They did not request my father's completed paperwork. No one spoke to us. No one told us to have a seat. No one said it would be a long wait. We arrived 40 minutes prior to my father's appointment time. (Remember, we were instructed to arrive 30 minutes early) The small waiting area was packed but I was able to find 2 seats together. The waiting room was crowded, not providing room for walkers and wheelchairs. In other words, an orthopedic office that is not handicapped friendly. The majority of the patients were elderly.
After about an hour, I asked if they would like my father's paperwork. I was rudely told, "We will call you. Have a seat." Ok, I was put in my place. Finally they requested my father's paperwork, ID and insurance information. My father was waiting for them to return his ID, but I had noticed they kept it from the others so I told my father we would get it later. There was no explanation from the staff. After approximately 2 hours, a sales rep brought lunch in for the staff. All of us in the waiting room were making sarcastic statements like, "At least they are going to feed us." After 2 1/2 hrs my father was finally taken to a room. No conversation from the staff. We were told there were 2 chairs behind the door. My father wanted to question the attendant (I don't know if she was a nurse, assistant or what because no one introduced themselves!) but her response was, "you can stand if you want but I need to get to the computer. " At this point I assumed she was going to ask questions about my father's injury but I was wrong. She gave me the xray CD and said the doctor will be with you. My father looked at me, questioning if he was to take his shirt off. About 15 minutes later the doctor came in.
As I said in the beginning this review is about First Settlement not the doctor. We arrived at 9:30 for our 10:10 appointment. We were taken back to the exam room at 11:55. We saw the doctor at 12:19.
My father and I deserve more respect then we received from the staff. I have been in Healthcare for 40+ years, with more then 25 years in Quality, working with physicians and staff to assure everyone was treated they way they would want their family treated. I have been the individual who investigated patient complaints read more
