We chose the 7:30 PM Architecture River Cruise with priority boarding. It was AMAZING! This was one of our most favorite things we did while in Chicago. We chose the last row of seats on the upper deck so no one was behind us, and we had the best wide opened views. It was truly spectacular. We were so impressed with Pat's knowledge of the buildings, history, and architecture. She has so much passion. It was if she was telling the history of the buildings to guests for the very 1st time even though she has been doing this for 17 years! She also added a great sense of humor. Jacob in particular was spectacular in narrating the history of Chicago and the architecture. Unfortunately, it began raining while we waited in line to board but the STAFF were great and had us board early. Regrettably this impacted my ability to obtain quality images for my food and travel blog post. Such is life. At least I took many architectural shots from land in the days prior. The docent was very good and very knowledgeable giving us the details on the Chicago Tribune, various architectural styles (Art Deco, Mission Craftsman, modern etc.). It was not always the easiest to hear because we were located inside. The boat is a standard older style 2-hour boat cruise style. We have done boat tours in Tahoe and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They have nice restrooms, a bar and indoor and outdoor space with seating. I was able to get some shots from underneath the overhang outside when the rain lightened up. read more

What a fabulous tour that the Chicago Architecture Center provides! We had Steve as our guide on the most recent trip, and the energy he brought to the tour was incredible. Took a boat tour with this company on the 4th of July weekend, during Covid. We were visiting Chicago from Los Angeles, and we were happy to find something to do, because many attractions not open due to Covid. The tour lasts 90 minutes, and there is both outside and indoor seating. We sat outside, and the weather was very nice. Narrative was provided by a volunteer ( forgot his name, but he was awesome). My husband arranged for the tour, so I wasn't aware that the tour is focused on the architecture of Chicago Buildings along the trip. If you are looking for a detailed boat tour designed to learn more about architecture of Chicago buildings, this is the perfect tour for you. Personally, I would have enjoyed a more general tour focusing on a broader spectrum of information. read more

we loved this tour! we went as a group for a school event and this tour was definitely the highlight of our trip. we were with Ronnie Jo and Captain Diamond (i believe that was their names?) and they did absolutely wonderful. the volunteer was very obviously passionate about what she was talking about and made the experience so much more enjoyable. the bar was reasonably priced for an attraction and the lakeview lemonade was really good. i would definitely come back for this tour again. read more

We had the best time with Chicago's First Lady on the architecture boat tour! It was fun learning about the history of Chicago as it pertains to its architecture and its waterways! I'm usually not much of a history person, but I found the information that our tour guide Susan provided to be very intriguing. We went under 24 bridges and saw countless beautiful buildings and structures. We learned about the river itself and the Chicago fires and how it all has impacted and currently impacts the city. The tour was about an hour and a half and the weather was honestly perfect. It was supposed to rain but it ended up being partly cloudy with the sun poking out every once in a while so we were perfectly comfortable sitting on the top deck. There's also bathrooms and a bar on the lower deck of the boat; it seemed to be a full bar. I would highly recommend Chicago's First Lady for their architecture boat tour! It makes all the difference in the world to have a good speaker and she is terrible. Although we have been to Chicago many times, this was the first time that we went on the architectural river boat cruise. We went on a Sunday morning at the 10 am slot and it was great because it was not full and while it was nice and sunny, the sun was not as strong yet. The tour guide was a volunteer from the Chicago Architecture Centre. Our tour guide, Lindy, was really great and very knowledgeable and provided lots of great facts not only about the bulldogs and architecture but also about the city of Chicago. As she was a volunteer, she is not allowed to accept tips. The 90 minute tour went by so quickly. Highly recommend this boat tour. read more

I'm absolutely shook that some people said this tour was a huge disappointment. Did y'all close your eyes for a whole 120 minutes?! How can you not like a giant boat, river, booze, and Chicago's infamous architecture? It's not the cheapest tour, but it's definitely worth it. Tourist or not, it's a great way to learn about the influences, adversities, and developments of Chicago's riverwalk and buildings. Susan is our tour guide we took a 9am tour to get our tour started, what i didnt realize that this tour stays in the river, it doesnt go out into Lake Michigan through the levy system. they are easy to locate down by the waterway, they have lots of umbrellas designated to whichever tour time you take. staff was helpful in directing us. I enjoyed be able to drink a mimosa at 9am that made the trip all the more fun, lots of history and beautiful architecture all throughout, at one point in the middle of the tour you get this smell of melting chocolate,Susan interrupted what she was currently discussing to see if all smelled the same thing. i turn to my husband and say where is the chocolate smell coming from.women and chocolate go hand in hand. it turns out there is a chocolate factory up the way and when the wind blows right the air fills with the smell. so i looked up the info and was able to find it! I've done an architectural tour in Chicago a few years ago, but on my recent visit I was with some newcomers to Chicago. We chose this company based on reviews and availability for tours during our time in the city. Buying tickets was seamless as you do it online or through the Ticketmaster app. We arrived 30 mins prior to departure and boarding the vessel was pretty quick and easy. We were able to easily snag an outdoor seat as our weekday 4pm cruise was not at capacity. There is a bar that sells liquor and snacks inside the boat. Our host Lisa was amazing and offered great information on all of the buildings and sites we saw up and down the river. Overall this was a great 90 minutes and well worth what we paid. read more

Such a wonderful tour! We went at 4 during the weekday and there were enough seats to sit on top. They serve drinks that weren't very expensive and also had some snacks. They sell hats, sunglasses and sunscreen in case you forget your own. Having a hat definitely helped. Our guide was Judith and she was incredibly smart and also very funny. read more

Wow! What a severe disappointment. I had no idea that the tours vary so widely. I know because we did another river cruise, Wendella Tours, previously that BLEW this one out the water! Straight up, I would not recommend this company to you. The first thing is that it was EXPENSIVE; $47 for adults, $23 for ALL CHILDREN UNDER 3, INCLUDING our 6 month old son who will not remember this experience. He can't even walk. Doesn't take up much space and hangs out in our arms so it's not like he needed a seat. What did we have to pay for him for???!!! The price would be justifiable if we got to out on the lake. Aside from the ridiculous cost, the tour was only confined to the river. We did not go out on the Lake (like the other tour took us)!!! A great visual element on the tour. And really a historical part that helps you understand the relationship between the river and the lake because you get to go through the levy, experiencing first hand what the tour guides may either mention or try to explain while on the tour. There are refreshments on the boats (that you have to pay for), but this tour company also had a smaller selection than the previous tour we took. I'm so glad that I was able to experience more than one tour to be able to speak to the various elements and aspects of what's generally offered. If I hadn't taken the previous tour, i wouldn't know all that we missed out on on his tour. In terms of the richness of history and depth of information and entertainment you get on the tour is all relative and just dependent on the actual guide you have. The best thing about the cruise was that the boat was well cared for. Although, smaller than the other tour boat we took on the better tour. And did not have a downstairs outdoor balcony. The confusing thing is that there are apparently different Chicago River tours run by different companies, all claiming to be the premiere architectural tour. But steer very clear of the First Lady Tour. It's unfortunately not worth it. read more

Russ was really wonderful and informative on this 90 minute Architectural Boat Tour. He explained all the different architecture types and about the architects themselves and had great stories. He even threw in a little comedy here and there. It was interesting to learn when the buildings were built (all within the last 100 years!!) and the histories surrounding them. The structures themselves are an amazing accomplishment and the beauty of each one is enjoyed on this cruise. The tour goes down the Chicago River and forks to the North (turns around) and then to the South (turns around) and then back up the River to the Navy Pier where it turns around and heads back to the dock. Love the Architectural tour. We've done it a couple of times and enjoyed it each time. We've also done a 'competing' tour on another line that was good as well. On these tours the narrators are docents from the Architectural Foundation. You get a bit of a different presentation depending on who presents, but it is always informative and the 90 minutes goes fast as they have lots of facts about the buildings, architecture, city, and people throughout history. It's well worth your time and the boat ride is relaxing and there is a nice bar area downstairs that has a variety of drinks, water, and snacks. read more

Fantastic tour on the Chicago's First Lady! If you have not been on it I would highly recommend this tour company and the fact that you can drink and buy alcohol on the boat is event better. The tour is about 1.5 hours in length and you go down the river with a guide from the Chicago architecture center and they give you insights into the city from past to present. They tell you who designed each and every building and they give you a great historical lesson. I really enjoyed each and every minute of this tour. You go past places like the Trump tower, Hitchcock building and many other areas. They tell you a history lesson of the city. You see where the barn stood that housed Mrs. Olearys farm that started the great Chicago fire and you see Goose Island! Overall a great tour and I highly recommend! read more

Our Chicago Architecture Cruise yesterday was a real treat. Adrienne, our volunteer docent, provided an energetic and informative commentary...with interesting dollops of the city's history mixed in. Beautiful weather enhanced the experience...sunshine really brings out the best in some of these buildings along the Riverwalk. True, there was a LOT of info to take in...but thankfully, we were not required to pass a quiz in order to leave the boat ... All that, and we got to bask in the glow of the Cardinals sweep of the Cubbies, too! read more
