This credit union was the only one and one of the first, if not the first, to provide loans for people buying Tesla EV vehicles in Iowa. What I like most about this credit union is an advisor is assigned to you, gets to know you, and works hard to help you achieve your dream through their financial products. What could use some work is the lobby is very long and you have to walk all the way to the far end to conduct your business. This can be difficult for people who are mobility challenged. The GICU also has an interest-earning checking account--around 3 percent at the time this was written. They have an automatic change machine which charges you for sorting your change. I do t like these machines because they don't give you back your foreign coins you forgot, etc. The people at this credit union seem pretty hard-core sales but not so much they would advise you to do something that wasn't beneficial for you, imo. They do have a Spanish-speaking teller who is knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind.

I went directly there and tried to deposit 2 large checks in my account that I have had for years and they denied them saying they would bounce?? I said I was told a manager could approve them. Wasn't offered a manager. Their loss, went to GreenState CU opened a checking, saving and money market accounts there without ever being a customer before. Asked them why they were able to cash the checks and Affinity wouldn't. They said they had no idea because they were both certified checks so they couldn't bounce. GreenState made it very easy and now they get to hold on to my money. Thinking about getting a CD there too.

There is even a small play area for children. The staff has been pleasant to deal with as well. In my opinion, the downside is the lack of explanation when opening an account. They have three account options that are credit-based and they do not explain the limits for each account; they assume you will read the fine print. Yes, some may read the fine print, but not everyone does, and that can be problematic. The lowest account option only allows you to spend $250.00 per day, of your own money. Had that been verbally explained prior to the finalization of opening the account, my mother would have opted to go elsewhere. Also, they do not have an after-hours helpline and are only available Monday through Friday during regular bank hours. This can also be problematic if you have a lost or stolen card or something is wrong with your account.

I never received that call, nor did it appear on my caller ID. No message left if she did call. I followed up the next morning by email, and she shared the result of the loan application. Failed to say thank you, and did not even include her name at the end. This is not a credit union that would be a good match, given the cold reception I received from start to finish. If you are searching for an institution that cares about your needs, this would not be recommended. I never write reviews. I was beyond surprised at the lack of professionalism.

Generally after waiting about 10 minutes for the only teller to finish their conversation about how they sprained their wrist, it takes another 5 minutes just to figure out what I'm there for, even though I show up with a deposit slip filled out, check endorsed, ready to go. On top of that they try to get me to sign up for services I have no need for, every time. Awful. Learn how to be a service to your customers and not a burden.
