SunWest Credit Union

My parents have been members at SunWest Credit Union for quite a few years. They recommended it to…read moreme, so I got a couple of accounts. They would get a "Great" score from us, however they decided to close the branch office that was closest to us (which was still over 30 miles away). Now in order to visit a branch office we have to drive close to 40 miles one way. Not Ideal At All, especially with minimally abled customers. The products at SunWest are very good. The checking and savings accounts have good interest rates. They have products that will insure different things you use every day, like your cell phone, for decent prices with specific accounts. They offer other products, like loan products, that have decent interest rates and payment options. They have products for young people just starting out that help them save money, as well. I have liked SunWest Credit union, not only for the products, but for the people who worked there. We had always been treated Very Well every time we walked into the branch office at Prince and Campbell, and some of the tellers and bank officials remembered our names. I will miss that. Another nice thing about SunWest is, it has a positive working relationship with Hughes Federal Credit Union. They charge no fees for it, and allow you to do SunWest business at Hughes branches, and visa versa. (as long as you already have accounts with the Credit Union in question. In other words, you can not open an account for one Credit Union at the other Credit Union)

Branch closures have made it inconvenient to get to the single branch left in Tucson. An hour round trip now. The app and website are down way too much and phone calls for technical support after hours? A robot that can only offer to change your password. And despite having direct deposit for over 25 years...they told us a couple months ago that we didn't qualify for online check deposits on the app because we didn't do enough business through the account. This despite having paid off three car loans with them. One as recently as last year. It was really nice to walk into a branch and be recognized and called by name and to reach a human being when a phone call was necessary. We are looking at ending our longstanding relationship with what we see as a much changed business.

Let's face it, most of us are not fans of any of the evil empires - insurance companies, hedge…read morefunds, Walmart, oil companies, and most of the rest of the financial world, including big banks. However, we're forced to do business with most of them (a little like spouses - you can't with them, and you can't live without them), otherwise, it's almost impossible to function in our somewhat civilized world. Given what's happened to our economy in the past few years, I would really prefer to keep my money under the mattress and out of the hands of robber barons. When I needed to open a business checking account when I incorporated, I wanted a financial institution with national reach, a local friendly branch, convenient to my home, and hopefully free of any or most of the responsibility for the past financial meltdown we've experienced as of late. I found what I was looking for in the Broadway & Prudence branch of US Bank. The branch is located right off of Broadway in front of Home Depot. There is ample parking, with drive-through tellers and ATM. I've never experienced a long wait for the friendly and knowledgeable tellers, who always have a smile on their faces. Opening business checking and money market accounts was extremely simple and quick, with no fees (yea!). The on-line banking site is also very easy to use and understand. As long as I don't feel like I'm being robbed by them, the staff remains friendly, and the branch is not swallowed by a sinkhole, this US Bank branch will serve as my business bank for the foreseeable future.

I went with U.S. Bank because they have Saturday hours, they met my criteria for my 501(c)(3), and…read moreMarco was super friendly and helpful with the set up of my account. we exchanged a few emails before my appointment to make sure that I had all the paperwork straight so I didn't have to waste any time when I was there. I've never had a banker go above and beyond for me like that. he answered all my questions, he told me a potential issues that might occur with some of my paperwork, and he explained how to avoid fees. I hope the rest of my experience with this bank goes as well as my first day, I will have to wait and see though. I will also add, while I was doing my appointment there were tons of friendly people coming and going and the tellers were all very friendly and everybody was greeting everybody. It felt like an old school bank in a small town.

They aren't terrible so far. We got a car loan at a very low rate. We didn't have an account…read moreprior to that. (We bank at Hughes Federal Credit Union typically). I have to say that Hughes is far superior; no mistakes, more convenient. Because I have a loan, we opened a savings and checking accounts. Within 7 months, there have been two annoying mistakes. I would say watch your accounts. 1. We were somehow enrolled in bill pay about 3 months in. That was a monthly charge. I caught it and they politely reversed the charges but I did not sign up for this service. 2. They took an extra payment from our Savings for the car loan on month 7. Our car payment is supposed to come from Hughes. They took that payment and they took one from our Savings at TFCU in July 2022. I called and they said we were enrolled in autopay from our TFCU savings. WE NEVER enrolled in this. They can't tell me how this originated. I had to sign paperwork to reverse this and they were friendly about it. BUT I am leery that there have been two mistakes made in such a short time. Good points: They are friendly and the customer support chats on the phone app are very easy to use and responsive. They gave me a great rate on my car loan.

Not thrilled with these people. Never spent so much time angry at a credit union since I left…read moretraditional banks. Just went and closed my account and am on my way to Chase with the money after this post.
