It was an honest question, since I was just laid off. "Yes". "Ok, unemployed". "How did you hear about us", I was asked. "Well, I have a potential client, an they ask that I transact in Zelle. I saw your bank does that." She said "Well, any bank can do that". I used to work in the financial industry, and I didn't think that was true, but I could be mistaken (acutally, she was wrong). Did it matter, though? I was told "We are pretty much for business customers". I do not have thin skin, but I cannot remember being so insulted since I was probably in college. I took back my divers license, and said, "I do not think that this will be worth the hassle" Not a parting word was said to me. The Bank of America 800 number was one of my first calls and the customer service guy cancelled my debit card and asked if I had a passport to which I replied yes. He said take your passport into your nearest branch and they'll get your account closed and a new one opened so that there's no issue with the lost checks. Great, sounds like a plan. I walked into this branch at a minute or so after 2pm. I explained my situation to the lifeless brain dead greeter and handed her my passport. About 3 minutes later she comes back and says the branch manager told her that they would close my current account with the passport but not open a new one. I'm 40 but one of my accounts is about 38 years old and the other is about 20 years old. I'm standing there with a government issued United States passport and I've had a super frustrating day. I yell that this is F***ing ridiculous and that I would never walk into this bank again. I walked out at 2:06pm. The following day I'm still just as angry when I think about it. Guess what? I headed on over to another branch when I left there and everything got taken care of promptly and smoothly. Why was this douche such a F***ing dick? Doesn't a United States Passport that was issued less than a year ago always trump a state issued driver's license?

The ATM gave me 5 $20 bills and a $100 bill. This alone required me to go into the branch to break the $100 bill. They no longer use the teller windows inside; you have to go to an employee's desk where they want you to sit down and only then they get up again and go inside a secured room to get the cash and bring it back to their desk for you. WHO IS THIS BENEFITTING? NOT THE CUSTOMER. All I want to do is get in and out quickly. This is their new concept in personal banking. I spoke with the District Manager who told me that this is for our benefit. I tried calling the 800 number and after 15 minutes of being redirected, they hung up on my call.

Commerce Bank served me well for many, many years through college…read more And then, something happened...and it's all gone to hell in a handbasket. It all began with something that didn't even happen to me, but my parents. On a vacation to Mexico, they were using ATM's to get money. Upon returning to the States, they received several overdraft notices for my little brother's account. Turns out, Commerce had some wires crossed, so instead of drawing money from my parents' accounts, it was being taken out of my little brother's. Yes, my parents are on my brother's account, but their account is supposed to be the primary one and the one that ATM withdrawals come from. Furthermore, Commerce gave them a hard time about having the charges reversed, even though it was their system's fault! I was content to leave my money there while I was at school in Ohio, but when I decided to move to Boston, I decided to close my account there. When I went into do so, I told them that I wanted to maintain my credit card through them, and just close the bank accounts. (I figure, in today's economy, it's good to establish good credit any way possible.) Imagine my surprise when I went to pay for something with my Commerce VISA and it was declined. At two different places! Turns out, they'd closed my credit card as well and not bothered to tell me. On top of all that, their online banking system sucks. It's counterintuitive to negotiate and, several times while I was using it, they'd change their rules about passwords and stuff and I'd basically have to re-set it up again. If you're looking for a bank with good service and convenient locations, go for Bank of America. Amazing service, plenty of places to go (all over the country, too), and I actually trust them with my money.
