Awful service, grotty surroundings, average food.
Arrived for Saturday lunch with our two teenagers, and were greeted by the waitress with "if there are only four of you, you can't have two tables; you'll have to squeeze around one or I'll get into trouble from the boss". Indeed: to our bemusement and that of the others in the cafe, the boss came out and made a huge scene of moving us and chairs so that we only took up one small table. (The second table sat empty and chairless for the entire time we were there.)
Over the next hour, the owner wandered out into the restaurant a few times to scowl at the customers.
The food was OK, but certainly not of the standard you'd expect for $18 mains. The vegetarian mushroom and artichoke lasagne was tasty; the herbed fish cakes were bland and consisted mostly of potato; the Vietnamese chicken noodle salad was fresh tasting but ungenerous. One meal arrived in about fifteen minutes; the other three not until half an hour later. On the positive side, the coffee was excellent, and the ginger and fig cake outstanding.
As far as the surroundings go, I think they've confused edgy with grotty - the whole place looked like it needed a wash: grotty floor, walls, and windows; old tables, crockery and glasses; waitresses with untidy and stained clothes.
All in all, pretty disappointing given some of the glowing reviews (including the one from the SMH). read more
