I forgot his name. But truly, this experience was a 0-star. I feel terrible saying this, but having tried a few different dance studios in NY/NJ, this lesson was in my bottom two for sure. Immediately upon walking in, the studio was completely empty and dark. It didn't have that warm vibrant feeling most studios have. The staff was overly casual, which isn't what I expect at a highly-revered dance studio such as Fred Astaire - I don't care that it's in a NJ suburb. The level of professionalism should be the same all across the board whether in NYC or not. The staff looked very young and inexperienced. Also, the woman who booked my appointment - Renata - was a little pushy over the phone. Back to my instructor. He was awkward socially, trying way too hard. It felt like he was auditioning for a role. His skill level wasn't great at all. For a student, I would say maybe advanced level. For an instructor, intermediate. An instructor should not be awkward or lack any skill level! They should be super confident in attitude, presentation, and in movement - but I felt like he just didn't hit the mark. Also, after each song/dance ended, he would hold my hand and escort me all the way to the stereo system in the corner. It was SO awkward! Last week (June 2012) - I came here with a LivingSocial deal and had my first of two 40min private lessons. This time I brought my boyfriend, and immediately after walking in - I knew it was under different management. It was lively, bright, and there were students walking in and out, and there was another lesson going on at the same time as ours. There were 3 instructors there, all of whom looked like professionals, and we actually found out that two of them really are national champions - one of whom was our instructor Larissa. They also confirmed that it is under new management; the Ridgewood location took this location over. Back to our instructor. Larissa is friendly, patient, and offers good critiques, but you can tell she doesn't have years and years of experience. After our lesson, her partner John Mohammad showed us a YouTube video of them performing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mqT3w8x7rM). From the video, you could tell that he is at a higher level than she is in dancing. That kind of bummed me out because that's the level of dancing I'd prefer my instructor to have. This recent experience is my 3-star rating. It was a-okay for now. I'll have to see how our next lesson is with Larissa.
