Alex was able to meet me at the school library around once a week (sometimes more for tests and quizzes). He actually graduated from Berkeley and had taken the same course before. Sometimes scheduling didn't work but he made sure I was taken care of at least once a week. Never hired a tutor before so the experience overall was enjoyable. I believe they do offer to change tutors if you aren't happy but I didn't have to deal with that. Will call again but hopefully won't have to!

When I told my son we were going to re-start sessions at Sylvan for his writing, he entered the building crying. Anthony the Center Director was very patient, developed a good rapport with him that calmed him down, and spoke to him in a way that put him at ease. He seemed to sincerely care about understanding what was going on, to be sure my son was seen, and make that connection. I feel that conversation started my son on the right foot. He believes the staff really cares about his success and about him as a person. My son now really likes (!) going to Sylvan because he sees it as a positive place where people are looking out for him. He has told me a few times that Sylvan exactly prepared him for the work he was doing in class. He had a private tutor before this, but he feels Sylvan's methodology and staff are much more effective for him. His writing is much improved, and the results in his report card show it! The other aspects of what I appreciate about Sylvan compared to a private tutor is that there are several teachers, so there is no missed lesson if schedules don't align with one person ... there is always someone who can give a lesson. Some of the staff are / were school teachers so they are very skilled. Also, you can easily ramp up or down with more or less sessions as you need, and sometimes they can easily identify when other aspects (e.g. grammar) get in the way of the skill you're trying to improve (e.g. writing). I really like that flexibility and those resources with a great staff. During Covid, Sylvan was quick to seamlessly move to online tutoring so students did not need to miss any education. I think Sylvan Piedmont is very well run, with a talented and caring team. I highly recommend it!

Maria is a highly intuitive teacher that quick adapts her program to fit the learning curve and style of the student. In my case, I already speak Spanish and had learned Italian once. Knowing this, Maria didn't waste anytime going over grammar structures that are 90% the same between Spanish/Portuguese. She immediately started teaching me how to adapt my Spanish into Portuguese, steering me clear of false cognates and important differences. Maria wonderfully focuses on oral fluency and the importance of listening/speaking. Which, unless you're going to be publishing something in Portuguese, is the goal anyhow! The results of here amazing teaching? After once a week classes for 3 months, I was speaking rudimentary Portuguese and after 6 months I went to Brazil for work. I was fully able to communicate and understand 90% of what people said! 0% to conversationally fluent in 6 months speaks for itself!

She has a number of qualities that I really appreciate: -- She is a a professional teacher, with a clear understanding of how people learn languages and common pitfalls that occur. She also has excellent knowledge of both French *and* English grammar, and can explain the French language in a way that makes sense for English speakers. -- She does a good job of balancing grammar studies with free conversation. To speak a language well, I am a firm believer you just have to spend many, many hours speaking it. A solid understanding of grammar, though, is essential to accelerating this process. In our lessons, we would spend a good fraction just chatting. She would then identify rough spots where we could review grammar points and add vocabulary. I really liked this adaptive approach, and felt like the session was finely tuned to my needs. -- She comes prepared with a huge array of content: radio interviews, videos, newspaper clippings, grammar summaries, vocab sheets, etc. She tries to identify subjects her students are interested in (cooking, traveling, hobbies, etc.) and then tunes the content to those areas. Christelle is the best language teacher I have ever had. I just can't recommend her highly enough.

Christelle is a wonderful teacher and when I take lessons with her I feel as if all of the struggle and headache that usually comes with learning a new language goes away entirely. The process is fun and accessible and it is always a pleasure to work with Christelle, and each week I feel as if I have gained noticeable progress. She is very understanding with student's unique needs and backgrounds and as someone who had come to her with zero experience with French I felt that she gave me a fantastic level of support in starting from the ground up.

Our choice was between academic pressure-cooker kiddie jail or a play-based environment with no emphasis on literacy or numeracy (the emphasis was on speaking in more than one language). We chose the less academic option which was great for avoiding traumatised children, but this meant that when we arrived in the US our children were academically behind their age groups. Anne's decades of experience in East Bay public schools makes her a great tutor. She knows that not all children learn in the same way and is comfortable with being flexible in her approach. She is a person who genuinely enjoys spending time with children. Our kids think of her as a friend who makes them work hard. They fight over who gets the privilege of working first! We could not be more happy with the work that Anne has done with our two children who are now six and seven. Their progress has been remarkable, and the self-confidence they have gained has been invaluable. In seven months they caught up on two years worth of material. Her rates are very reasonable, and her willingness to tutor children in their own homes makes scheduling much easier.
