We took the docent led tour of James Whitcomb Riley's boyhood home in Greenfield. Tracy, our guide,…read morewas knowledgable and interesting. She led us on an hour tour through the house and museum, relaying stories of the family and ties to Riley's poems. The Midwest farmhouse was built by Riley's father, Reuben Riley. Reuben was a prominent attorney in Greenfield, but had an incredible gift of carpentry. The attention to detail of his work is evident throughout the house with hand carved staircase, a sewing box, his desk and much more. The house has been maintained remarkably and is filled with many period pieces, some original to the family. We learned about his siblings and the inspiration for "Little Orphant Annie", Mary Alice Smith, who briefly lived in the house. Walking across the creaky wooden floors, it was easy to imagine family life during the 1800's. The grounds are immaculate and open for events. An event center next door is available for weddings, meetings and other events. A gift shop and small museum are attached to the event center. The tour takes about an hour and questions are encouraged. The hours are seasonal, so best to check availability. We did not have reservations. There is a small parking lot behind the house, but we found street parking in front. The tour does require climbing stairs, but they can facilitate a tour for those with mobility challenges. The tour is $7 for adults and $2 for kids over 5 years. If you like history, architecture or literature, the tour is a must.

Having not stepped foot into the house, here's what I liked about it: poetry. As we wandered around the exterior of the property, through the garden and under the rose trellis, we were treated with poetry excerpts on signs and boards at every step. Clearly, this is a home that has embraced its literary heritage. My guess (hope?) is that they are trying to make poetry more accessible to and liked by children - something I think Riley himself would have approved of.

BMO Plaza is another massive building which makes up part of the spectacular and unappreciated underrated skyline of Indianapolis. Some of these buildings can be seen from 50 miles away on a clear day from a good vantage point. You'll know that you're looking at the impressive BMO building because it says BMO on it LOL. What can I say. I like big buildings. And big things in general.

The first time I passed by the Rush County Courthouse, I thought it was a cathedral. Like most…read moreIndiana courthouses, the building sits on a grand square in the center of the county seat, Rushville. The Courthouse was built in 1896 and is the third courthouse to sit on the square. In the brochure, it's referred to as the "new" courthouse. The building was designed by architects out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, A. W. Rush and Sons. The Richardsonian Romanesque style is different from other courthouses I've seen in Indiana. The courthouse cost $257,385.88 to build. The grounds are simple with a single historical marker that recognizes historic local resident Wendell Willkie. I went through security and asked if there was info about the Courthouse. A friendly deputy was able to give me a 1996 pamphlet that described the courthouse and its history. The interior is beautiful after a complete restoration in recent years. Venetian mosaic floors at the entrance and in the atriums are spectacular. Original staircases with lovely iron scrollwork ascend up to the third floor. Original woodwork and hand painted scrollwork decorate the walls and ceilings. Victorian lettering identifies office areas. On the third floor, a large atrium with a stain glass dome transforms the grand space. A stained glass image of Lady Liberty adorns a wall near the courtroom. The original 1890s spectator chairs remain in the courtroom. Of course, many necessary updates to modernize and improve accessibility have occurred throughout the year. Yet, several ornate fireplaces still grace office corners. The courthouse has received accolades for its beauty from the Indiana Bicentennial Project. The historic sheriff's quarters and jail, which once stood on the southeast corner, were destroy to make room for a modern jail facility. The Courthouse is spectacular and worth a visit. There's plenty of parking on the Square.

Film Indiana is also known as the Indiana Film Commission. Film Indiana is a government agency…read moretasked with showcasing the state's assets, resources, and locations to local and out-of-state production companies and individuals seeking information and assistance with film, television, and commercial production. This is no small challenge considering Indiana continues to not offer a tax incentive to filmmakers for making their films in Indiana. We've lost films because of this lack of tax incentive - including films actually set in Indiana. Film Indiana offers the Indiana Production Directory documenting crew, equipment rental facilities, production companies and various other support services. Film Indiana also offers the Indiana Locations Database which documents "all that Indiana has to offer as a backdrop for any type of project." Film Indiana works to raise awareness and support the community by organizing industry networking events, advising local filmmakers and promoting our state's wide array of film festivals. There's a burgeoning film community in Indiana - from a highly respected film journalists association (of which I'm a member) to Academy Award-qualifying film fests (Heartland Film) and a growing number of high quality filmmakers. As a young adult, I appeared as an extra in several films shot in Indiana from "Hoosiers" to "Rudy" to "A League of Their Own" to "Hard Rain" and others. For the record, you'd be lucky to find me in one of those shots - but I'm there! The Film Indiana website also has a listing of all of Indiana's film festivals and a filmography of films that were actually shot in Indiana. There's more than you might expect. Film Indiana is an awesome, largely under-appreciated government agency that adds a lot to Indiana's cultural landscape. I've had the pleasure of working with them on several occasions at festivals, conferences, and workshops. While the last year has been particularly challenging even for the indie film community, Film Indiana is still hard at work and doing amazing things to grow the film industry in Indiana. If you've ever wondered about working in indie film, you can check out the Film Indiana website and even find a variety of job opportunities. Seriously, Film Indiana is a wonderful agency doing awesome work to promote Indiana's statewide film community!

It is a big place and very full service in so many areas. They are a member of the Evergreen Indiana Library Consortium which consists of over 100 libraries all over the state. You can order any book online from any library in their system and have it delivered to the library nearest you. There is a volunteer group here called "Friends of the Library" that I have donated books to from my bookcases. They sell used books from time to time when the library purges their inventory. My mom used to volunteer here for 11 years until she passed in 2014. She got insider info on all the new books coming out. She was an avid reader and loved working here at this library.
