Having a fear of tourists and the fact I don't speak a word of Cantonese (born and brought up here) going Chinese grocery shopping in China Town is rather traumatic for me without my mum. So when I discovered a little Chinese grocery shop in between Mile End and Bow Road tube stations my prayers had been answered. Don't be fooled by the small shop front, there's a whole basement of goodies to be discovered.
The shop doesn't sell much fresh produce - as mainly sells dry goods, jars, tins and frozen goods, etc - but you will find some fresh veg, tofu and noodles. The frozen section is amazing for massive prawns, seafood and various other bits like duck and pancakes . They stock almost every kind of noodle imaginable and loads of bottles/jars of sauces.
Now you may not be able to get all the fruit and veg you can get in China Town but being in the East end it's not like there aren't a million Asian grocery shops near by that will do the job. I love shopping at this hidden little gem, my cooking almost tastes like my mum's. read more
