Gangsters is a sandwich shop located on the main stretch of businesses on Broadway in Saskatoon…read more One of the first businesses you see after crossing over the Broadway Bridge. It is an Italian sandwich shop with about 7 or 8 sandwich options to choose from. It is set up to be a takeout shop, but there are some chairs in front of the store. The restaurant has limited hours as it is only open for lunch on Tuesday to Saturday. Not sure if this was a COVID related decision, but sandwiches are premade and wrapped in plastic. You choose what you want and pay at the counter. I am unsure if you have the choice to get your sandwich freshly made or not. Using a premade sandwich operating model seems to indicate that there is no option to customize the sandwich. I grabbed an Italian deli sandwich and took it back to the hotel to eat. I would have liked the option to have the sandwich toasted, as it seemed like a sandwich that was put in the fridge. The bread hardens a little. I did love the basil mayo in the sandwich, which had a very unique and fresh flavor. Overall, I thought the sandwich was decent, but I wonder if it would have tasted better if it was freshly made rather than premade.

The other half is a small deli. There's a choice of about half a dozen different kinds of pepperoni. We tried the hot and mild. My 6 year old loved the mild and the hot was just the right amount of spice. Also a small selection of sandwich meat, bulk kosher dill pickles, olives, and a variety of cured sausages. We grabbed some garlic sausage that was a very delicious addition to our perogie dinner. Also some hot dogs that were made using sheep casings that were out of this world. 4 stars because the hours (12-5) make it a little tough to shop. Also the selection is minimal.

I got the War Pig ($15.5), my boyfriend got the Double Rink Burger ($12) with 2 slices American Cheese ($3) and Back Bacon ($2), a fountain pop ($2.75) and we shared Garlic Fries ($9) with 2 Mayo Dill ($2.5) sauces for dipping. My boyfriend really enjoyed his burger, he would return here again. A man of simple words The burgers are messy, so be prepared to use a bunch of napkins ! He was also very pleased about free drink refills. Our fries were delicious and had an extremely strong garlic taste. I think the fresh minced garlic was sautéd in oil and parsley, giving it such a strong and natural taste. Loved it. Especially because they made house cut fries! While the Mayo Dill was good, I only recommend getting the mayo dill if you get plain fries. My War Pig was phenomenal. It was a double stack of smashed beef using fresh chuck/brisket of a 80/20 % blend and I could taste it was good quality beef. This burger consists of side bacon, back bacon, bourbon bacon jam, LOADED with crispy fried onions, and topped with lettuce, tomato and mustard. Easily one of the best Smash Burgers in Saskatchewan. Wouldn't change a thing. They deliver on their promise of big flavors and generous portions, so you definitely won't leave hungry. All of the ingredients are high quality, fresh, and locally sourced. The lady who took our order was very friendly and provided excellent service. On top of that, the pricing was reasonable considering the portion sizes and overall quality. On an unrelated note, I wholeheartedly loved to watch Jurassic park while we had our dinner!!! I highly recommend this spot and everything we ordered. My only regret was that I didn't have room for a milkshake !

I know the website says not to change the making of anything but, I can't have mustard. We ask to have the mustard on the side. We were told NO. I said "I can't have mustard. Can you please just leave it off?" I was told NO again. So, my husband and I looked over the menu to find something without mustard. We finally found 2 items. Then when they say spicy...they mean HOT. The spicy ketchup on the meatloaf is very hot and The smoked chipotle dip is very hot. I couldn't eat either of them and my husband, who has no problem with hot wings and fire sauce, could not eat them either. To sum up, we did not enjoy our visit. How hard is it to leave mustard off of a sandwich. I wish them luck...but it's definitely not for us.

Very fresh rye bread and a delicious filling. I really enjoyed it. The soup was really good too. I like the spice and it was piping hot. Loved it. I gave them 4 stars because 3 and a half is not an option. Although the sandwich was delicious, I felt they took a little long to make it. They need to look at their process and somehow make it quicker while maintaining the quality. In a location like this, where they primarily cater to a lunch crowd, the process should be fast. Just saying. Getting me back is the biggest compliment I can give and I will be back.

We placed our order, which was a bowl of Wicked Thai soup and a Turkey Cheddar sandwich. Upon waiting for our food, I went to use the ladies restroom, and I was in utter disgust. It appeared as though it had not been cleaned in months. There were long hairs all over the door handle, feces splattered on the inside of the toilet bowl, and mold and mildew covering the sink. If I hadn't already place my order, I would've walked out. My sandwich was mediocre at best. Deli meat with cheese, tomato, cheap bread and watery mayo. My mother's Thai soup resembled nothing close to Thai flavours, so she exchanged it for the Broccoli Cheddar, and was horrified. It was brown in colour, completely watered down, and tasted like salty mud. We were so grossed out and disappointed that we just threw the food in the garbage and walked out. We will NEVER return, and hope this review helps others avoid a terrible dining experience.

The dishes are attractively presented but without pretence. Portions are moderate in size: not huge but enough for most people for lunch. The menu is not large but suitable for a small cafe like this. There are several sweets available for after the meal, as well as hot and cold beverages. The ambience is generally quiet and peaceful; there is seating for around 30. Staff are competent and friendly and happy to accommodate. Four stars because five might be more appropriate for a high-end place. The Boxcar does not pretend to be what it isn't, but does breakfast and lunch very well, at modest prices. Definitely worth several return visits. And no, I'm not given to hyperbole...

I almost never leave reviews for anything, but this place is too important not to. I moved away…read morefrom Saskatoon 50 years ago and this is the first time I have been back to Gibson's. Because it is such a fixture, I'm not at all sure that Saskatonians realize the importance of this iconic family restaurant. To me, it should be as hallowed a spot as the Schwartz Deli in Montreal. But I digress. What you really want to know is, why should you go and why should you care? 1. You should go because of the food. They use actual, real potatoes in their french fries, which is almost unheard of today. I honestly cannot remember when I last had any, which is rather sad really. I suspect that most people think the fries they are served in most restaurants are real, and not just reconstituted potato goop formed into fry shapes. Which is what they are. Also, the fish and seafood are perfectly done, meaning the shrimp is still juicy and the fish light and flaky. Good, simple food, done well and with care. 2. You should go because of the people. They actually look you in the eyes when they smile and greet you. Like they actually mean what they say, they care about your answer, and are not just reciting a script (I swear to gawd if one more waitress asks me how my day is going as they walk ahead of me to my table, I'm going to scream!) 3. You should go because of the mid-century ambience. Yes, the decor is dated, but that's part of its charm. The restaurant is very clean and well-maintained. Almost like they care about their history. You should too. 4. They still wrap their take-out in newspaper to keep it warm! If you don't understand why this is a big deal, I can't help you. 5, And finally, you should go because it is an important part of this city's history. And in my humble opinion, that is worth preserving and celebrating.
