The menu goes through changes on a regular basis so old favourites like the ten euro steak deal, lasagne and southern fried chicken have been replaced with more exotic options like falafel and seafood tagliatelle but you'll still find safe bets like burgers and meat and two veg on the updated menu. I've never had a bad meal here, but I couldn't rave about it either. It does the job to be sure, but it always feels a bit weird eating here as it's more of a late night venue with a young clientele, so as an "owl fogey" it's a spot I tend to avoid after a certain hour so I feel these negative connotations may have coloured my dining experiences slightly!

A group of us wandered down the dark alley one Sunday afternoon, a little anxious about what we might discover... Pleasantly surprised to find ourselves inside a Sleeping Beauty-like cavern of candlelit wonder, we stopped to marvel over the interior before giving the solitary bar man his rush of the century. The place was empty before we arrived, but luckily we'd brought a large enough group to make the entire place our own. The candelabras, mood lighting and high, domed ceilings make this place enchantingly atmospheric, but let's not forget the practicalities. Annesley House is the exception to this rule. It's true that the bar downstairs is quiet with just a few of the regulars most nights of the week, but upstairs is one of the best live-music venues in Dublin. Over the years there have been a number of legendary trad sessions in the place, but Annesley House also hosts alternative and indie bands. It's usually a tenner or less in, and the pints are reasonably priced by pub standards, which makes them practically free compared to other music venues. It's a pity that more people don't know about Annesley House, it is one of the city's absolute gems, and if you're from Dublin and call yourself a muso without having ever been there, you'd want to get yourself over there sharpish and experience one of the best (and definitely cheapest) musical experiences around.

Any spare change is wrapped in an ever expanding spool of coins that encloses the pillars on the bar counter and climb to the ceiling. When they get there the money is handed over to charity. Mary's is an unassuming, quaint local pub that has more to offer than you would expect upon entering. The vibe at Mary's is old school, Irish-country-side local mixed with a bit of inner-city charm. It ties perfectly into the pub scene that makes Dublin, and Ireland so special. There is a small bar at the main door and you can bet every stool is going to be filled. Just beyond the bar there is a small seating/lounge area that again will be full. The treasure for us was down the stairs where the space underneath Mary's opens to a sprawling u-shaped bar with copious amounts of seating surrounding it plus a freaking burger joint! What was planned as a quick pitstop for a pint turned into a few pints, a cocktail and a couple of burgers! Most of our time was spent downstairs in a corner table by the bar. The bartender was friendly, poured the perfect pint and mixed a great cocktail. They offered house snacks and sambos/toasties, but we got our meal from Wow Burger (different review). Overall, we enjoyed our stop into Mary's Bar. Definitely recommended for the local or visitor alike!
