I tried out everyplace that offered judo in the city and wasn't happy. Almost giving up on finding the perfect dojo, I decided to pop into Kokushi Budo. It was an incredible first day and every day since has only gotten better. They were so welcoming. I was greeted by Sensei Andy who showed me the ropes and made sure I felt welcome and comfortable. He answered all of my questions and really helped me connect with the dojo. Sensei Shintaro Higashi is an unmatched Judoka in skill and finesse. He's an amazing teacher who all of us admire and can really look up to. I can honestly say that I feel safer in the streets of NYC from what I have learned from Sensei and everyone else at Kokushi. As my schedule allows, I sometimes make it early to class and wait as the kid's program finishes. Andy and Shintaro are easily the the best Sensei's I have ever seen with young people - they're outstanding role models and you can see how much they care for their students. KBI is not just a dojo, it's a family who cares about the success and well being of ALL its members. And that my friends is priceless.

The studio has a great feeling of community, which is not always the case with some martial arts studios. A lot of times, martial arts studios have all sorts of money making schemes and you have to pay more and more as you advance. But, with Harlem Tae Kwon Do, you pay one set fee. The studio is not glistening and sparkling like some places, but it's got all the amenities, including a huge training room, a gym, two small locker rooms, one for men and one for women, and an area where kids can play. Master Malick's children are often there, too, so it's great for kids and adults who can't really leave their kids. As far as the feel of the place, you get to meet very giving and kind people from the neighborhood, while taking part in an activity that stimulates your mind and you body. If you want an intense workout, MWF is really good for adults. Then, early evenings is good for learning more of the blocks, kicks and punches. All in all, I highly recommend Harlem Tae Kwon Do.

Friendly, family atmosphere, excellent instruction, and my daughter is excelling and advancing steadily. The combination of athleticism, valuable life skills, and enhancement to my child's safety and confidence is invaluable, and the plentiful after-school classes work perfectly with our schedules. One thing my daughter especially likes is abundant opportunity for sparring with others at her level (focused, with full equipment, completely safe). This provides a more active, engaging and effective kind of training, especially compared to other schools that don't do much sparring. High marks also to Master Fall and Master Cisse, fine teachers.

Located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, West Side Taekwondo is one of the best taekwondo…read moreschools in the world. And it's not just because of its powerhouse competition program. It's because it's one of the few places where "taekwondo" still means "taekwondo". It's a place where people of all ages, size, and athletic ability can come to challenge themselves and achieve goals that they never thought they could achieve. Very few taekwondo schools can maintain an excellent traditional taekwondo program alongside an elite competition program; in fact, it's nearly impossible. However, West Side is able to seamlessly do both very well. Growing up, I was heavily competitive in taekwondo, and West Side taekwondo was one of those famous, well-known schools from New York City. It was the "place-to-be" and they had many great athletes and coaches. Later in life, I was lucky enough to have a chance to train at West Side on many occasions. They've always accepted me with open arms even though I was not a "regular" (because I lived 4 hours away), and I met many great people in a short period of time. It was during this time that I had a chance to experience the wonderful community that exists at West Side. The energy and the atmosphere inside and outside of class is unmatched. It doesn't matter if you're a 10-year-old kid, a 40-year-old beginner, or an Olympic athlete; you're always treated with respect and dignity, and you will be motivated to become the best person that you can be at West Side taekwondo.

Since the last time I did weight machines was in the Jack LaLanne/ Bally Total Fitness era, I decided to hire a trainer to give me a kind of orientation and help me launch a fitness routine. Liam came highly recommended. He customizes our sessions to reach my goals, and modifies them as my goals change. Liam knows my medical conditions, which he works with, and weak areas, which he helps me to strengthen. He suggests exercises I feel comfortable doing on my own in the gym, or at home. Liam can point out details of how a position or motion should feel, so I know when I'm doing it correctly. I have the attention span of a flea, yet he designs routines that are challenging and entertaining. He checks in often during a session, yet he can somehow inspire one or two more reps out of me than I believe possible. Befitnyc has a variety of classes which I've just begun to check out, from barre-pilates and tai chi to cross- and interval-training to zumba, all included in the very reasonable cost of membership. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the facilities are clean and well designed for a relatively small space. Best of all, the laid-back, diverse clientele makes me feel like I belong.
