Fig Tree Bridge is a girder bridge completed in September 1963 to cross the Lane Cove River, just west of central Sydney. It is just north of Tarban Creek Bridge and the more well known Gladesville Bridge. The bridge carries Burns Bay Road and a footpath and connects the suburb of Hunters Hill to Linley Point. It is a toll-free alternate route to Central Sydney to the Harbour Bridge that has a toll.
The current Fig Tree Bridge was built in conjunction with the Tarban Creek and Gladesville Bridges as part of the planned north-western expressway linking the city with the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. This grand road was cancelled before construction.
This bridge replaces the original Fig Tree Bridge built in 1885 just west of this location. The southern abutment still exists at the end of Joubert Street
The Fig Tree Bridge is one of the seven bridges in the annual Seven Bridges Walk, a loop circuit that crosses seven of Sydney's harbour bridges in a clockwise direction, which are: Sydney Harbour Bridge to Pyrmont Bridge to ANZAC Bridge to Iron Cove Bridge to Gladesville Bridge to Tarban Bridge to Fig Tree Bridge. You can start at any one of seven "villages" along the route and the starting point nearest to Fig Tree Bridge is Lane Cove village in Central Park. read more
