Tarban Creek Bridge, on Burns Bay Road, spans Tarban Creek from Hunters Hill to Huntleys Point…read more The bridge forms part of the northern approaches to the Gladesville Bridge. Its main arch is a complex and distinctive structure, spanning approximately 90 metres. The bridge was opened to traffic in 1965.

Tarban Creek Bridge is a concrete arch bridge over Tarban Creek, a tributary of Sydney Harbour…read more It is located between Gladesville Bridge and Fig Tree Bridge. The bridge allows Burns Bay Road and a walkway to connect the suburb of Hunter's Hill to Huntley's Point. This one looks like a mini Gladesville Bridge. Completed in December 1965, Tarban Creek Bridge formed the "missing link" between the existing Gladesville and Fig Tree Bridges, which traffic used to flow through the residential areas of Hunter's Hill to the annoyance of residents. The three new bridges were built for the proposed North Western Expressway that was cancelled by the Neville Wran state government. Tarban Creek Bridge is one of the seven bridges in the annual Seven Bridges Walk, a community fitness event to raise money for charity. It consists of a loop circuit that crosses seven of Sydney's harbour bridges in a clockwise direction, which are: Sydney Harbour Bridge to Pyrmont Bridge to ANZAC Bridge to Iron Cove Bridge to Gladesville Bridge to Tarban Bridge to Fig Tree Bridge. You can start at any one of seven "villages" next to the bridges. As an aside to an otherwise boring review, in the 1920s a beloved Aboriginal woman named Lucy Willerri ("Black Lucy") originally from Alligator River in Queensland, lived next to Tarban Creek. She was ancient but of unknown age from 70 to 100. Her and her dogs lived in a shanty of scrap iron and wood on the banks of Tarban Creek. When her hut burnt down in 1923, the citizens of Gladesville organized and built her a cottage on nearby Auburn Street. More than 200 people attended a ceremony where the Mayor of Hunters Hill handed over the keys. When Lucy died in 1928,the residents of Gladesville paid the costs of her burial in the Presbyterian section of Field of Mars Cemetery. No word on the dogs.

Willoughby Leisure Centre - It's a lonely looking car park in the rain today

I have my suspicions that the Willoughy Leisure Centre logo depicts a parent and child hobbling in…read morediscomfort on the daggy old pebbles that provide floor covering in the pool area. They're aggressive wee stones that leave angry sores on little knees and make bottoms tender and dimply (no it is not cellulite thank you very much!). Turn your grimace upward from the floor covering however and this pool is a great family spot. There's a warm kids pool which I think is mechanically heated as well as being full of wee. The adult pool has plenty of lanes and is popular. There's an oddly cold spa and a heated one if you want to pay extra. Showers are hot and free of charge, which as a local of Mosman Pool where you pay for the pleasure of rinsing off chlorine, that's a welcome change. There's a café, free onsite parking, gym and crèche, so popular with mums and tums. Just what is with the pebbles?!

As your local leisure centre, Willoughby ranks pretty well - surrounded on three sides by parkland,…read moreit's hidden away in the 'burbs and remarkable for the sheer size of its facilities - dominated by up to 30 outdoor under-lights netball courts. Between players, umpires and officials, this must account for pretty much half the women of the northern suburbs on a game night! Sadly, the parking facilities reflect that and it can be tricky to find a space especially at the end of one game and start of the next. Indoors, the Centre has another two multi-purpose courts (also in high demand for netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton) plus racquet sports courts, a large gym and rooms for exercise classes, and a 25-metre indoor pool (I'm never a huge fan of indoor public swimming pools and their associated facilities but this one is as clean and pleasant as they can be ..) Willoughby Council owns the Leisure Centre so along with the independently run competitions, the facilities are also used for schools, older people's fitness classes, swim school and more, so it can be pretty busy. But then the cost of membership - or casual entry - is much more reasonable that you'd pay in a privately run club.

Chatswood Oval - …on these wooden blocks as well. There's concrete in the centre holes, which are now depressing (in terms of vertical location and looks).

The playground at Chatswood Park has seen better days. Dilapidation is the word to describe it, and…read moreit appears Willoughby Council is set to forget about this playground (and maybe the park as well) - more development space maybe. Why not? We don't have enough appartments in Chatswood. Come on! Bring them in! Who needs parks, when you can make money from high rise appartments...? The gate to the playground is probably the best gate I've seen for any playground in Sydney. Should that playground go, I hope they save the gate. If you look closely there are even some faces on the bars of this Art Nouveau-esque gate. I think reading somewhere that this gate was made by a local artist. Way to go! However, after entering the playground you can't miss the many defects showing up. The line of mosaics on the ground are as bad and dilapidated now as the web browser of the same name (Mosaic that is - uuugh, geek joke). The latest addition to the playground is a newish water fountain indicating that the council hasn't completely given up on this playground (yet). However the remaining play gear is not in good condition. There are slides (one straight, one curved), swing(! only one left), a wooden boardwalk and a sandpit. There's a spinner that was in such bad state that it had to be wrapped in. The rubberised ground is breaking up also. The swings had their trailing 's' cut off to become a swing, meaning there used to be two. Must've been that playful, but ravaging possum figurine on top of it (see image). Damn you, playful, but ravaging possum figurines! Talking about ravages, the ravages of time also show up on a group of wooden blocks as well. I guess they were installed as way to play with balancing. Over time those wooden blocks must've developed holes in their centre, which the Council must have filled with concrete to avoid getting trapped (and sued). However further deterioration of the wood means these concrete fillers are now depressing further (unfortunately both, in terms of their vertical location and looks). On the upside, this playground offers lots of shade thanks to big trees around and the slides and sandpit are not broken down yet. Willoughy Council, do something about this playground!

Built in 2001, Chatswood is a medium sized skatepark located just near the main shopping district…read morein downtown Chatswood. The park consists of a 5ft half bowl with extension, a couple of 5-6 ft banks featuring boxes, rails and extensions & finally a 2ft quarter leads down to a small funbox and handrail.
