The cafe is anchored by open kitchen/dining room in converted shipping container. The space, all blond wood, green tiled counter, and sixties swivel chairs, opens onto the expansive, gravelly garden. Herb filled planters, plenty of bike parking, and a stretch of picnic ready astro turf makes for an inviting and relaxing place to chill and have a coffee. The well curated menu features waffles with figs, a brisket sandwich, a "raw" salad, and selection of baked goods, and plenty of eggy things. I had the crumbed green tomato sandwich with tomato relish, mayo, and pickled onion on a fluffy brioche bun. Very decadent for a veggie sandwich, but full of flavour (could fried green tomatoes be my new favourite Melbourne cafe trend? Very likely). I was super stoked to see a small, mixed green salad punchy with vinigar dressing accompanying my sandwich. Perfect to cut through the sweetness and richness of the sandwich. It was a very reasonable 11 dollars. My flat white was good, served plenty hot, as I like it, and service was friendly, if a bit rushed. So far, so good. I'm eager to come back and try a few more dishes here: As it is, Rudimentary has one of the best spaces in the west and at least one very good sandwich...Looking forward to next time.

Firstly we were told to sit and someone will come to us we waited and waited and waited no one came however when someone finally came she served the lady next to us who came after us we felt special... The same waitress then continued to talk with other patrons near us for around 15 minutes she can't be to busy... The food was bland overpriced very average at best we frequent many other places in the area that are so much better with food and service not sure how you have a 4.5 score I give you a 1 at best. If you're looking for nice food and good service try anywhere else but this place. I leave good reviews when I have a good experience and a negative review if I have a poor experience I have to say it's little wonder your business is poorly run when the owner can't even handle feedback your unprofessional reply pretty much sums up my negative feedback. ***UPDATE*** After meeting with the owner in person, he still failed to address any of the issues I raised online. I was told that I should have raised the issues when we were asked how the meal was. Maybe because we weren't asked! The staff member already knew we weren't happy with the service, and had no interest in asking. Just a heads up to anyone looking to try this place - the owner told me that negative Google reviews are only used by people wanting freebies. He has no interest in making any changes.

But no matter I went for an eggs Benedict instead, and so did the other half. Heard good things about the coffee here. Unfortunately I am no longer an avid drinker of coffee (thanks juice cleanse) so I just went for an OJ. That was served freshly squeezed in a huge mason jar it was cute. My partner got the latte and from the smell of it it seemed top notch! Also he said it was pretty damn special - so take his word for it guys :) So when hungover, time went by real slow for me. I was content sitting there spacing out and sipping on my OJ. Had I not been hungover though, I would have realized that 35 minutes went by and we didn't have our food yet. During that 35 minutes my partners coffee was long gone and 2 times that a waitresses came over she never offered him another coffee..! One of the waitresses came over extremely apologetic and promised us it was 5 mins away and admittedly they forgot about our order.. Dan was pretty dejected from this moment and wasn't very impressed with the place! They redeemed themselves though! Firstly they offered a second round of drinks on the house, and the food did come within 5 mins (notice that by the time we had our food we were now able to order the Reuben.. Dag nammit!) but the food was deeeeeelicous. It was beautifully presented and eggs were poached to perfection! We left there happy customers! So they had a rocky start, but we enjoyed the place and will come back (most likely after 1130 next time :))

Let's not forget they are well known for their baguettes which are crunchy on the outside and fluffy soft yet slightly sweet on the inside. If you've been to Hoi An or Da Nang in Vietnam, then you'll enjoy the baguettes here. Besides the mixed ham banh mi, I also love their bbq kebab and tofu banh mi. Once in a while, I'll get their french sticks with pate and mayonnaise. I love their pate and mayonnaise so much that sometimes I buy it to takeaway in a separate container so I can spread on my bread on the next day. Other note worthy items include their Banh Pate Chaud, Banh Tieu (Vietnamese Hollow Doughnuts) and Vietnamese creme caramel Flan. You'll easily get your banh mi between $4-5 depending on what you include/add in banh mi. I think it's ridiculously that there are places that specialise in banh mi and charge $7 plus. Banh Mi was designed as a quick and cheap food for breakfast or lunch. The best time to get banh mi or bread at this place is between morning till 12:30pm. During this time, their baguette tends to be the fresher and crunchiest. If you decide to buy their bread on itself own (including the Hollow Doughnut), I suggest you eat it on the day unless you plan to toast it the next day. There are few other favourite places I like to eat banh mi, but this place always delivers consistently yummy banh mi.

If you're southside like moi and have friends westside, Footscray Milking Station is a good compromise as its in the middle. It's a cute little cafe smack bang in on the of the prettier tree-lined streets of Footscray and within walking distance of Footscray station. Great selection of cakes to choose from and the soy lattes are pretty spectacular too. I had the huevos rancheros with bacon and they were rather delicious - two poached eggs encased in tortilla shell with beans, cheese and sour cream. Also got a couple of thousand rations of bacon on top, although two would have sufficed. There is no harm in being generous though, so thanks for that guys. My brunch companions had the corn fritters and gushed about their deliciousness. I will try them next time round. Highly recommend if you're in the hood. But even if you're not its a short drive or train ride away. Go on, cross the river. Inner west is tres cool these days with plenty of options.

I adore this place :) Recently they extended and more indoor tables means less of a fight for my morning breakfast on a weekend! I have never had a bad meal here, breakfasts are always cooked to perfected and they are not uppity about making small changes to your breakfast menu order like other cafes have started to do. I cannot comment on the coffee but can say their milkshakes are to die for, served in an old school stainless steel container and using Jonesy's milk they are just amazing. Service wise I would say it is great, they are a small outfit and it is very busy. They do their best and always manage a smile along the way. My tip at the moment would be the eggs atlantic with an amazing Salmon fillet as part of it! Makes the old smoked salmon seem a little pedestrian I must say :)
