Exterior at night. A little creepy.
    Katie E.

The exterior at night is a little off putting. It looks kinda sketchy, like it would be a dive bar. But sometimes those are the places you find the best food! Not in this case. When you walk in you are blinded by how bright the place is. It wasn't what I was expecting from the dark exterior. There was a crowd waiting to pay at the register and we didn't know where to go to find a seat. We waited at the end of the crowd u til my husband suggested I cut through them. That is when we saw the place to wait to be seated. There were a few employees cleaning off tables and we waited a few minutes to be seated. I'm used to being seated almost immediately at Mexican restaurants! Once we were seated and drink orders taken, we reviewed the menu. I was disappointed not to see a fajita bowl on the menu. I settled on chicken with grilled onions and peppers with pineapple. They were accommodating to leave off the cheese and rice for me. My son got Chili Colorado and thought it was just Ok. I felt the same way. I drink water with no ice and I could taste the dishwashing soap used to clean the cups. That was gross. I don't want to ingest those toxins. They need to rinse their glasses better. The most disappointing thing was none of our food came out at the same time. Restaurant 101 is to serve the table their meals at the same time. My son got his first, then a minute later me, then another minute later my husband. We also had to ask for drink refills. My son attends college here and this was our first time at this restaurant as we were visiting him. We will not come back. The food, atmosphere, and service didn't meet our standards.

The food is great and the Margaritas top it off just right. Great way to get the pre party started.

We stood and…read morewaited to be greeted and seated, must have been a few minutes, no one else was even in the restaurant. Once seated a bus boy handed us our chips and salsa. He was completely silent, no hello or good bye. He looked like he hated his job. You could immediately tell, these chips came out of a bag from the store. They were stale and moist. We found out, the waitress cannot understand English, well, she leads you to believe that. She never understood the questions we were asking. Hello, you work in Kentucky, not Mexico City. Learn the language! We finally received our food. The Chicken Street Tacos were cold and dry, the shrimp ceviche was flavorless and the bowl of Spanish rice was also very dry. My margarita was terribly sour. Way too much lime. Now I can eat almost anything, but this took the cake. EVERYTHING was not up to par, honestly, it was absolutely terrible. To make matters worse, flies kept landing on our food. We needed to order a fly swatter. That's when we decided to walk, we ate maybe 25% of our food and called it a day. I asked the waitress if their chips were store bought. She claimed she doesn't understand English again.. That's funny, you just took our order in English. She finally admitted the chips came from a store bought bag. Seriously?!? You don't make your own tortilla chips?!? That's just wrong. I told her everything was not as before when we last stopped by for lunch a few months ago, today you missed the mark. She completely ignored me and just rung me up for $44.00 No sorry, no nothing! She knew our food sucked and I should have known better, NO ONE was in the restaurant while we ate. That normally gets my attention, but it was too late this time, I wasn't paying attention. Warming!!! They do not care if your meal is subpar. They do not care if flies are invading your meal. They do not care at all to make things right. Obviously it's a take it and lump it senerio. We walked away from a table with a boatload of food still on it. She couldn't care less. Do yourself a big favor and steer clear of this so called Mexican restaurant. They put Mexican food to shame here. Taco Bell does a better job than these Mexican food wannabes. They are a million miles away from executing a meal that you could actually eat. I did leave them a tip, "make your own chips!" Stale and store bought chips should have made me walk minutes after I sat down. My brain needs to remember this next time. El Maguey Mexican Grill is a true and flaming Dumpster Fire! Truth be told, Garbage in, Garbage out! It's that simple and they don't care one thing about it. So sad! You're feeding people bad food and you're still expecting to collect their money. That's bad business and you should be held accountable for it.

The initial salsa was interesting, but not bad. My daughter's cheeseburger was what I expected in a Mexican restaurant. They even had good quality bun for it. My husband enjoyed his enchiladas. Probably some of the best Mexican food we've had north and east of El PasoTX and Costa Mesa CA! Start off with margaritas. I went for the top shelf and my wife for their regular. Must say the top shelf margarita had some terrific flavors! We also ordered the chunky guacamole to go with the chips and salsa. The chunky guacamole is the way to go! For our main courses, my wife decided on the Los Yolanda's (really chicken enchiladas) while I decided on their Carnitas platter. Our dishes came out surprisingly fast and were truly delicious! We were talked into an order of fried ice cream for dessert, again happy that we did as it was very yummy! An unexpected treat of complementary tequila shots and celebration of Cinco de Mayo was also truly appreciated. We did like the decor having a nice flare. We were so happy that many of the wait staff stopped by our table to ensure all was good. If we visit again, I'm sure we'll stop by! Keep up the great work!

Street tacos, empanadas, quesadillas Tortas, burritos and tamales- I think that is the whole menu. No Tex mex, no chimichangas, no Speedy Gonzalez special- this is more authentic. In fact, the waitress/cashier was the only other person in the building that spoke ANY English- including other patrons. Is this fancy? Nope. Is it clean? Yup. The shrimp street tacos were the best food in our opinion- tied with the chips and salsa. Also had carne asada and chorizo tacos and Burria empanadas and the shrimp was the best. Entire restaurant and bathrooms are handicap accessible, but this place is not right next to parking. It is in a little outdoor mall area, at the back, so you'll need to park and go maybe 100-150 yards to the door. If you need fried ice cream and a mariachi band, you need to stop elsewhere, but if you are looking for good quality, authentic food for a really reasonable price- this is it.
