The OG flagship park for Medford. Gone is the huge wooden play structure we grew up on where battle…read morewounds were earned from hitting your head running up and down the labyrinth of stairs and hiding spots. Gone are the onslaught of splinters, burns from the hot metal slides and being attacked by the countless wasps hiding in the nooks, crannies and roof peaks. Even back then, this was the park to go to! Fast forward to a recent refresh, the playground is still sprawling and super diverse, something for everyone! Wood has been replaced by plastic and metal but the laughter of kids as they run wild is still here. The only downside is maybe the lack of parking, but on hot summer days you'll find the ice cream truck posted up in the lot closest to the playground. What I really love about this park is that's it's more than just a playground. The greenway cuts through it making bike riding an awesome option. Keeping in that theme, there's a BMX style dirt track with whoops, table tops and fat banks and burms. A comprehensive skateboard park, tennis courts, a huge open grassy area, covered seating for parties and a large dog park round out this sprawling Medford classic.

Sadly, the bear house and little kids playground was burned on or about Feb 8, 2023. Luckily the…read moreplay area for older kids is still there. My 4-year-old was sad that she couldn't play bear; hopefully the bear house will be replaced. If you choose to give a thumbs-up or not, I hope you found my review helpful!

This park has lots of potential but on a frying hot day in August, we arrived to find all of the…read morewater features shut off except one, the pump to the artificial river into the sand. That feature was fun and there was enough water to wet enough sand to cool off and to have fun with but they really should have it working if they want to call it open. There is a wooded area and some grasslands surrounding the developed area but the park is in the middle of a new foothills subdivision with construction of houses still underway. Some of those very nice houses view onto the restroom facility, though it is a solar collector facility of which they seem quite proud. Plus the restroom odor is apparent on the picnic deck. They do have a few kinks to work out. The climbing rock is unique for an artificial venue. It is a huge boulder with chunks of natural stone attached, apparently with hidden bolts and some sort of adhesive. Some areas are easy enough for amateurs, others more difficult. There is a paved walking path with features designed for educational use and appears to be handicapped accessible. There is a more rustic natural area too, with lizards and what appeared to be poison oak. I'd love to see this place fully operational and be able to review it again. My local hosts had heard it was open and fun for kids so we went and visited for part of an afternoon.

This beautiful state park is just north of the town of Medford and runs along the southern bank of…read morethe Rogue River. Though the river is known for its rapids up near Grants Pass, this section is mostly placid with one section of faster water that the little fishing motor boat we saw had no problem with. The dirt, mostly single track trail runs fairly close to the river, with access points for fisherman or fun like throwing rocks into the water. There were plenty of birds to view. We saw one mountain bike and and some sections of the trail had clearly been travelled by horses. There was one groomed loop that was an interpretive trail, with numbered stations but no info. It just may be too early in the season to get maps at entry since the booth was unmanned when we entered the large parking lot. A good time was had by all, including the dogs, though they came home with DOZENS of ticks so be careful out there.

Other visitors behind us just ignored the ticket booth without consequence. Once we paid and entered the Park we noted 75+% of the grassy/picnic areas were unusable due to being showered by sprinkler system - thus all visitors were uncomfortably squished together in the few dry spots available. The watering system went on-and-on for about an hour and a half. Thus a giant F/U shout-out is due the OR State Park workers who are either too stupid, too lazy, or just plain so inconsiderate to be bothered to handle their park maintenance chores like watering outside of the middle of the afternoon when the Park usage is at it's peak. And note there are two sets of restrooms in the Park - both apparently permanently closed. Instead there are portable units with no running water. So your $5 entry fee is paying for what, exactly? Too bad this place is so poorly managed. It could and should be a community asset. Instead it's just another example of poorly run government. BTW - when the Park employees did come around to finally shut off the spinklers (some of which watered the parking lot as much as the grass) - they didn't bother to do anything else (like check to make sure folks paid the entry fee, or pick up any trash, or bother to check if patrons were complying with Park Rules re alcohol, etc). What a waste of a resource...
