Our Bernese Mountain Dog, Bruno, recently had surgery at our regular vet to remove a tumor in his…read moremouth. Thankfully, everything came back benign. As expected, the surgery affected his appetite, but a few days later things took a concerning turn. By Sunday--four days post-surgery--he had completely stopped eating and drinking and became very lethargic. By that evening, he was barely moving. Having lost a dog years ago to kidney failure, I didn't want to take any chances, so I brought him to Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists, where I've had good experiences in the past. From the moment we arrived, the team was excellent. The receptionist was kind and attentive, and after the initial exam, Dr. Ormsby came in and immediately connected with Bruno. As soon as she walked in, he perked up. What stood out most was her approach. Instead of ordering a battery of expensive tests, she said, "Let me make him a charcuterie plate." She hand-fed him baby food and a few other items--and he ate. She discussed a kidney test but didn't feel it was necessary based on his symptoms. Instead, she explained that some of his post-surgery medications could be causing gastrointestinal inflammation and treated him accordingly. We followed her guidance at home, and Bruno is now eating again and getting back to his old self. Too often, veterinary visits feel transactional. This was the opposite. They truly cared, and it showed. I'm very grateful we chose Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists.

I brought my dog to this clinic for what was diagnosed as a tooth abscess. During the night…read morefollowing that visit, her condition declined significantly. She developed labored breathing and was unable to lie down, which are serious and alarming symptoms. I called the clinic as soon as they opened, reported the labored breathing, and requested an immediate appointment. Despite explaining the urgency, I waited approximately 2 1/2 hours to be seen. During that wait, I called a second time to again report her breathing distress and asked if she could be seen sooner, but no accommodation was made. When she was finally seen, I was charged approximately $1,100 for X-rays and bloodwork. The X-rays that were taken focused on her abdomen rather than her chest, despite her primary symptom being respiratory distress. The veterinarian continued to focus on a possible stomach issue and the fact that she would not eat that morning, even though I explained she had eaten dinner the night before and that her sudden refusal to eat coincided with the onset of breathing difficulty. Due to her worsening condition, I took her to an emergency veterinary hospital. There, I was told her lungs were filled with fluid. Despite their efforts, my dog passed away. I understand that veterinary medicine is complex, but labored breathing is a medical emergency, and respiratory causes should be thoroughly evaluated. I trusted the diagnosis and care I was given, but I feel my repeated concerns were not addressed with the urgency or focus they required. This experience has been devastating, and I hope this clinic reflects seriously on how emergency symptoms, diagnostic priorities, and client concerns are handled so that other pets and families do not suffer a similar loss.

The prices at Animal Hospital of Dunedin are not great, but I decided to make them my primary…read moreveterinary practice because they have Saturday hours. However, they use these hours to be dishonest and overcharge. I brought my dog in for a skin infection a few weeks ago. At this appointment, the vet I saw told me that I needed to update my dog's rabies vaccine too. However, she said that she didn't want to give him the vaccine that day because of the medications he was put on for his skin and because of his infection. The vet said I could have the vaccine administered at my dog's follow up appointment. When scheduling my dog's follow up appointment, I was told that a different vet at the practice would be handling the visit. I was not concerned, as Animal Hospital of Dunedin often changes the vet my pets are assigned to see. I was not warned in any way that this change of staff would adversely affect me by anyone. At my dog's follow up appointment, the vet looked at my dog's skin, teeth, and eye. She also checked his heart rate and gave my dog the vaccine. The appointment took under 5 minutes. However, when I went to the front desk, I found that I was being charged for an annual physical. When I saw the charge for an annual physical, I made the receptionist aware of the mistake. Annuals are $30+ more than regular appointments, and I had already been to Animal Hospital of Dunedin a few weeks prior, not a year prior. The receptionist said that I had to pay for an annual physical, as the vet I saw that day--for five minutes--hadn't seen my dog before. that's their policy. Animal Hospital of Dunedin changes the vet I see every time I come to their practice. I don't request these changes, but they always change the vet anyway. I have no idea how many times Animal Hospital of Dunedin has charged me $30 extra without notification. I only happened to catch the price today... My pets have been patients there for a while and I am not sure if I've ever seen the same vet twice. This behavior is dishonest. Also, I was told that nobody could help me with the price that day, but the manager would call me the following day, Sunday. However, the manager didn't call, so I called them. Next, I was told that the manager never works Sundays. If the manager only works Monday through Friday, that's totally fine. But why lie about it? Also, it's 5 PM on Monday and she still hasn't called. I called again and asked for a copy of my pets' records. I don't tolerate dishonesty.
