Making the pizza! What a great place...
    Max K.

It's kind of hard to find good pizza places in Rio, and with the help of Yelp I ended up bookmarking Ferro e Farinha (Iron and Flour) to visit.. and it was worth it! This place is really hype right now in Rio, such that it took me three times to be able to enter the place (ok, one time I went on a Monday and it was closed, but the second time it was so PACKED that I couldn't enter... and one of the girls that work there told me that sometimes there is a line even before they open!) A heads up: the place is tiny inside, a small balcony with at most 10-12 people that can sit and two or three tables on the sidewalk. It works from Wednesday to Sunday, open at 7pm and close around 11pm. They don't have many options of pizzas, neither of drinks... but what they do have is really good! The dough is very VERY good (did I emphasize enough the VERY?), the pizzas are made in a wooden-stove, and the beer is cold enough. The quality of the ingredients on the pizza is very good indeed, and that counts a lot! The mouth-to-mouth advertising says that this is a New York-style pizza.. but it was brought to my attention (by a New Yorker) that it is more a Napolitan (Italian) style. For Brazilians, one important point: americans and italians in general don't have the habit of putting huge amounts of toppings on the pizzas.. for Brazil, it is somehow strange... they compensate on the quality of the ingredients, but still is kinda weird to have a pizza in which the taste of the dough is considerably more strong than that of the topping (but u get used to it quickly). The atmosphere on this place is amazing! The owner is so friendly (and seeing him making the pizzas is amazing as well!) and even the customers are so friendly that the experience is more than just "eating pizza" (well, that should be good enough, right?)... it is also a friendly atmosphere that u feel like having pizza in you friends apartment! The pizza is expensive, more than 30 reais for an individual pizza... but I guess thats the price because of the high-quality ingredients... A more affordable option is Tango, in Famengo.... but for the whole experience, Ferro e Farinha is better, for sure.

Everyone said this place was great so we had to check it out. We arrived shortly after 7pm on a Sunday night and already the place was packed. We rested on plastic stools before they offered us a spot at the communal table (outside) though 7 people, 3 different parties, was a little tight. It took quite a while before we even got to see menus. Apparently they weren't quite open yet but already people had drinks and menus. We tried the house iced tea which was strong and unsweetened. We also tried the ginger spritzer which was refreshing. They offered filtered tap water and a few selections of beer, like the Mistura Classica Vertigem, an Indian pale ale. The Arizona gunpowder cocktail sure lived up to its namesake, with a potent mix of matcha and overwhelming ginger; it was spicy and left your mouth with a bang. About 90 minutes later we finally got our pizzas, a shiitake and a margherita (domenico). They were thin crust pizzas, barely enough for three hungry people. The flavor was excellent and the crust was perfect. For that size the prices were fine, R$40. They also offered a few side dishes like kimchi and a chocolate mousse dessert. If I lived closer to Catete, I would come more often but honestly it's too crowded for my tastes. Waiting to get a seat, waiting to get a menu, waiting for drinks, waiting more than an hour for a pizza, and worst yet waiting for our bill when there's a line of people who desperately wanted our table, just seemed like things were managed well to operate smoothly. I guess Brazilians like their filas, so waiting comes naturally. It just seems like it's a popular place enough to do a little more prep work before hours of operation and maybe have a few more people on staff (there were only two people when they opened and they were scrambling).

Pizza trinity! Delicious special pizza this week remniscent of a Vietnamese veg spring roll!

Beat pizza in town. Great vibe, excellent dough and original pizza. Try the spicy honey pizza, it's simply amazing.

This is a pay by the weight kind of spot, you walk in and receive a paper where after you get your buffet style food on the plate you will put your plate on a scale and get the value on the paper you received at the door for later payment o your way out. They here offer from deserts to sushi and bbq. They also have crepe and pastas made to order and a bbq grill going also to grab by order. The pasts selection is good and the salgadinhos are also available here. I had: BOLINHAS DE QUEIJO- those are salgadinhos and I love cheese anything so I had to have it, they were not super great but they were eatable ROCAMBOLE DE CARNE - this is a shredded meat and mashed potatoes roll, glfelt a little heavy to eat but if I was hungrier it would have been perfect. PASTEL DE CATUPIRY-this is like an empanada with a special kind of Brazilian cheese and it was good, could been better if it was warm. PUDIM DE LEITE- this is a desert milk flan it also was sort of ok nothu ng impressive. The place has 3 floors for sitting as it gets pretty busy at linch time during the week. Overall this is ok place if you have no other choice at the moment and if you arre very hungry, otherwise it is a very mediocre place to eat. The prices were ok and the food was meh.

Food options they offer omelets and pasta made to order, crepe made to order and a BBQ area. Plus Japanese, large salad options and hot dishes. They have a lot of quiches, or cheese tarts which are good. The lines for the crepes can get long, but they have sweet and savory options. At the BBQ area you can pick to have carne na chapa. I think they also have chicken. The third floor also has a Pizza area (rodizio) but they have been closed for a few months (apparently for renovation/remodeling. their pizzas were good - thin crust, and good options. Service was not the best, as it would be slow, but apparently they were reorganizing to fix these issues. Regardless, coming here you will never have nothing to eat. there is always something for someone...you may not be able to sit together at a table because of seating, but if you are a small group it is do-able.
