Racism is alive and well in 2023 and unfortunately it came to my front door…read more On Sunday, March 13th Laila completed her final gymnastics meet of the season. One in which she received 2nd place-Overall Gymnastics among her team as well as the other competing teams. Following, this meet her Level 1 Junior Olympics team coach Maggie thought it was appropriate to write Laila a congratulatory notes calling her Miss Bojangles!!(Please see the note attached). To say we were appauled, outraged, and shocked would be an understatement. What hurts the most is that in speaking to Laila and educating our 8 year old on the history of Bojangles, racism, and many other topics Laila expressed feelings of hurt, and extreme sadness. How do you explain to a child at 8, that everyone that says they like you and are a proud of you unfortunately aren't. Thankfully, I am a Mental Health Counselor and know how to treat Trauma. On Tuesday, March 15th I promptly emailed @All American Gymnastics and Super Ninja St.Louis owner Susan (Sue Renshaw) and below is her response. As you read it it says nicknames are given for team building purposes. Also, noted if Laila was hurt we apologize. No sincerity, nor accountability. It is absolutely apparent that Sue's lawyer wrote this document for her. Sue references how she was so looking forward to Laila continuing with them. I can name 3 reasons she was. 1. Laila always brings home individual scores of 35 or higher, 2. She is an awesome gymnast, and 3. We pay our financial obligations and show up and show out everytime. Sue's self/business accountability looked like releasing us from the remaining 2 months of financial obligations and not allowing Coach Maggie Coffey the opportunity to explain her choice of nickname. Also, Maggie has never referred to Laila as this name in front of myself or any other family members. Please share this post and help us hold All American Gymnastics and Super Ninja accountable!!! #IStandWithLaila

The facility is perfect for classes, the class sizes are small enough to get individual attention, and the parent area is comfortable. I'd highly recommend for kids from toddler to school age.

Excellent, excellent race!…read more The U-City 10 and 2 is a 10 mile competitive race (or a 2 mile non-timed walk). I did the 10 mile race (in preparations for the upcoming Go! St. Louis Half Marathon) and I was extremely pleased with the entire event from start to finish. Packet pickup was a snap; Ghisallo sponsored the race, and packets were available to be picked up at their running store on North & South. Race day registration (and packet pickups) were also available. The race itself started at Centennial Commons, which was nice. It was a cold day, so being able to warm up in the gym before the race was nice. And there was plenty of parking if you got there early enough. The race? Well, it was 10 miles of HILLS! Get ready to do some climbing, folks! It was rough in some parts, but the amazing volunteers made it all worthwhile -- they were full of energy! The race wound all around University City, and even went through the loop! Running through the loop at 8 in the morning is a pretty awesome experience, I must say. Water stops were at every other mile, which was super nice. I never went thirsty, and carrying a water bottle wasn't even necessary. Post race support was great as well; lots of bananas, bagels, sports drinks, water, and even gels to refuel and replenish. I say this about almost every race I participate in, but this one is definitely going on the schedule for next year. Very organized, fun, and well-attended. Great job, Ghisallo!

I contacted Wohl Center to inquire about boxing training for my Grandson who was home on Spring…read morebreak and was told he would be welcome to join the training. The next day my Grandson entered the gym, the trainer was so very rude and unprofessional stating " he didn't have time for him and for him to leave the gym"? " my Grandson replied " are you for real ?" the trainer stated " I will knock you the fuck out"? My Grandson couldn't believe this man was the trainer speaking this way for no reason , so he started to asked someone in the gym where he could find the trainer , when the guy told security to walk him out .

The day we arrived they had sign-ups for boxing classes, swimming, and open play time in the mutli-purpose area. There was a sparse tv lounge / computer room where some folks were playing cards. I can't vouch for the classes themselves, but the facility was clean and decent, if a little institutional. However, the people were very nice and it seems like a very safe and secure facility. They have a low tolerance for mischief, which we very much appreciated. But, we came for the pool and this was the clincher for us. The pool wing has been recently spruced up and it is a beautiful natatorium. Very 1960's modern with full height glass and glass block walls on three sides. Gorgeous. The pool itself is large and clean (highly chlorinated, which is probably a plus for public pools). Check the website for pool hours, as they are only open a few hours a day. There weren't many kids swimming on the evening hours we have gone, but the minus here is the locker room. Not a big deal for me but it may be for some. The showers and locker area was, again, very institutional. Also, several toilets were out of order and there was no toilet tissue to be found. So, bring your own TP. They also ask that swimmers shower before using the pool, which is a good thing in my book. Also, FREE! With just a little more staff and funding, this place could be the jewel of the northside...

Well, I had just gotten my bike fixed and ready to go, and realized I was absolutely petrified to…read moreride near or in St. Louis traffic. Hell, I'm scared of these crackheads driving in a car. So, I looked around for some resources, practiced around my block and read up some more. I fortunately heard about Trailnet's Bike Smart class, which was free for those who qualify. Well, sad face, the first one got cancelled, and I received c courtesy call to make sure I heard it was cancelled (stupid rain). Well, it was rescheduled and I was one happy cyclist, since by that time I had actually made my way to Forest Park and rode in traffic a little. The class was awesome. It informed cyclists of their legal rights and the legality of certain practices (obeying traffic lights, not riding on sidewalks downtown and other business districts). They also gave us some nice coupons and then we did the street portion, where we practiced avoidance maneuvers, quick turns, etc, then got to ride in traffic in a group ride. My back brake (my favorite one and best one to use regularly), somehow decided to break, and one of the teachers told me what I needed to do to fix it, so I was doubly served by the class. I know they have group rides and do alot of policy and advocacy work as well, but I'm not quite at the group ride stage yet, I'll update when/if I go to one.
