Beginner stained glass pieces made at Feral Studio
    Andi W.

I'm hooked. And it is totally Susanna's fault. . I have always wanted to learn how to do stained glass. The colors...the light shining through the glass...the creativity of design...the intricacy of a puzzle that comes together...all of it has always teased my brain and driven me to want to learn more. And then, last month, I did it. I finally signed up for a class at Feral Studio. And it was everything and more than I hoped. The perfect studio space. The kindest and most creative teacher. Other students who share my obsession. Piece one was a smashing success and I am already in the next class with my own design in process. Thank you, Susanna. I feel like I found stained glass and SO MUCH MORE at Feral Studio .

My pink, pink, pink moon even in a yellow sky....

The Artist's Way suggests taking oneself on art dates to keep creativity flowing. I signed up for the beginner stained glass class with zero knowledge of what was involved. I went with beginners mind and a desire to take myself on some art dates. So glad I took myself out for these classes! Susanna is a gifted teacher. She takes you through step by step, every need and question is anticipated and ready for an answer and support. The studio space is fun and inspiring, well-organized and easy to find parking. You will go home with a beautiful work of art and desire to make more. If you're considering signing up, I say go for it!

stained glass in my kitchen after the install

I live in a 1912 Craftsman in Oakland that has a good balance of antique details with modern sensibilities. As my husband and I were trying to design the kitchen space in a way that was respectful to what we love (the old growth redwood and the original farm sink) but updating what we disliked (lack of storage), we decided to make some new built-ins and wanted to make sure they vibed with the kitchen, balancing the craftsman style with a modern aesthetic. We decided stained glass was the way to go! I wanted to hire someone local and FERAL was a studio that popped up and met all the criteria. I contacted Susanna and we had a zoom call to talk about possibilities. She completely understood what we were looking for and provided sketches of art to make sure we were all aligned. I could tell she was energized like I was! I met up with her at her glass studio in Oakland and she showed me a range of glass that would work for our project and taught me about transparency, how the glass was manufactured, and how we could achieve the right vibe. We landed some clear that obscured the cabinet contents and some vintage smokey grey that had been made in Europe. The artwork and the glass completely nailed the modern craftsman aesthetic I was going for! We commissioned three small glasses and one tall one. She finished them all in the timeframe she provided while sharing her progress along the way. My husband and I built the cupboards and she was generous enough to teach us about the names and methods for building the wooden frames, even though it's not her expertise, so we could make sure the art would really sing! For those of you who aren't DIY cabinet makers, she also said she had a cabinet maker she could recommend. All in all, the work Susanna provided has made our funky old kitchen into a showroom in our house. The work isn't cheap, but it adds a lot more value and love to the house than what we paid! I highly recommend FERAL STUDIO's work for anyone looking for a big upgrade in their home. She's lovely, talented, and very clear when she talks about her craft.

Susanna at Feral is amazing! Such a pleasure to work with. We commissioned a large internal window stained glass -- like 5' by 4' -- with three custom-designed scenes. The process getting all the details together was extremely professional and the artistry is wonderful. And she was very accommodating of our various change requests over the course of the project. It's an heirloom piece. Every time anyone visits and gets the house tour, they ask all about it. How could you not!

I took a beginner's stained glass class with Susanna and had the best time learning this super cool art/skill/trade! I highly recommend taking a class or gifting someone this experience. I loved cutting each piece of glass, grinding and sanding it down, wrapping it in copper foil, soldering the pieces together, framing it and finally hanging it! The hardest part of this project was choosing glass! So many different colors and textures to choose from. I am inspired to make another piece and look forward to learning from Susanna again. She's easy going, talented, and a great teacher!

Susanna from Feral Arts made us the most amazing stained glass window! My wife and I had the idea to get a strained glass window made based on a piece of artwork we like. We came to Susanna after several other stained glass artists closer to our house said outright they couldn't do our project, or that it would be too much work. One of them recommended Susanna, and she said (I'm paraphrasing) "Challenged Accepted!" This was a very complex, custom project. Susanna checked in with us several times as she worked on project, sending us emails with images to ask our preferences and discuss details. Part way through the process she invited us to her studio to go through several pieces of glass and discuss finalizing, so she could really fine-tune our project with us. That was fun experience in itself. Susanna also put us in contact with an installer who was very easy to work it. The results of all this are stunning. The window is so much better than we even could have imagined. It's beautiful throughout the day and even at night. If you have any need, interest, or desire to have a custom stained glass piece, this is absolutely the studio and artist for you!

Took an intro level class with Susanna. She was a great teacher and I had fun learning and chit chatting with the other classmates. The class was small (3 people myself included) and the studio space was well lit and pleasant to be in.

Susanna created custom stained glass panes for our custom built-ins and for a transom window. She was wonderful to work with and matched the colors, design, and glass from the Frank Lloyd Wright-design front door. Susanna is creative and her final work is gorgeous.

If you are considering about having custom stained glass in your home, you should consider contacting Susanna from Feral Studio. She is an extremely skilled stained glass artist in the first place and her calm and warm personality made us easy to talk with her too. We have discussed a lot about the very small details to achieve what we want and we think being able to have smooth communication is crucial when you are ordering one of a kind work. I watched this beautiful Spanish movie many years ago and there was this beehive stained glass that I dreamed to have it at my home for a long time. Susanna has recreated it and she made my long time dream come true. The warmth I feel through the stained glass light gives me so much happiness every single day.

Contacted Susanna to help us with a window in our 1894 Victorian. She was super helpful in guiding us through the design process, heard our concerns and gave us the feedback needed to let us know if she thought we were headed in the right direction or not. We love the final product and had a great time working with Feral Studio!

It's a rare opportunity for working folks who love art (but never get to do it) to be artistic and creative. We also hoped it would be an opportunity to meet people, relax, unwind, drink some wine, and hang out... but we discovered one fine weekday eve that it was lots of Draw but very little Drink. There are some serious art students in Berkeley! The art instructor was knowledgeable, talented and inspiring, and brought some great materials for us to use - handmade paper, high-quality ink, brushes. We did have to supply some of our own stuff, like scratch paper, pencils, erasers. She taught us new techniques and was very hands-on. A few completed projects even looked frame-worthy. Kala offers great programs if you want to do art in the evening. However, if you actually want to hang out with friends, catch up, and Drink with your Draw, you may want to go to a bar. Just sayin'...!

To give you a sense of how much my kid loves this art class, I'll say this: There were precisely two things she missed the most during COVID, and that was going to Disneyland and Doug's Sunday morning art classes. Doug is really knowledgeable--I did art reviews at the Rhode Island School of Design for a while, so I have a sense of elements that make up art. Doug knows this really well, and this allows him to help people develop their art. Because he can break down what makes art, he can demystify the process for his students. Doug's intelligence really shines through when he helps his students focus on technique. Doug is also incredibly terrific with kids. He's not some dictator or sergeant. He gives gentle advice (again, advice that is *really* smart), and he knows how to push, how to inspire, and how to let a kid's imagination run. He's patient and calm, and he smiles and laughs. This is a person who really does love art, and he wants to share that love with others. Dropping my kid off at Doug's place, I see kids who are younger, teens, and adults. He has a capacity to speak to each of these age groups. It's impressive, and we're really appreciative that our kid gets to attend his classes.
