I was a complete newbie to ceramics and took a 6-week wheel throwing class last year. I'm totally hooked! The teachers are great and really tailor classes to what you are looking to learn about or make. I took another class and then became a member because I wanted to focus on my own projects. Overall, I highly recommend Mudworks! You have access to all the tools and supplies you need, in addition to a great range of glazes. The atmosphere in the studio is friendly, fun, and helpful - I am really grateful for the little community they're making here. read more

My friend and I joined a 6-week hand building class at this studio in El Cerrito. We live in Walnut Creek and Lafayette. While there were some things we learned, there was a lot that was frustrating: - the first class started with making an animal which neither of us were really interested in. It seemed like a waste of a lesson - the cost includes 25lbs worth of clay which seemed overkill. I used about half of it because there simply isn't time in 6 weeks to use it all - It would have been better if we could pay for the clay we used rather than pay for an amount that we would not use. - firing only happens when the studio has enough items, which environmentally makes sense but isn't often enough for a six-week course, and there is no way to find out the date for when something will be fired. The result is that I finished the 6 weeks and was unable to take anything home and have to guess when it might be fired and then drive back to El Cerrito to pick it up. That might be easier for people that live in the area but not helpful for those that live further away. It might be easier to make this work if you live in the area and can make use of the 3 hours per week studio time to go and make additional items. I would not sign up for this series of classes again. read more

I've come here both as a student taking classes and as a member, met lots of great people, and come a long way in my own pottery practice. They're always adding new tools to the studio and hosting fun workshops, and I'm excited to see what events they'll put on in the future. The teachers are fantastic, knowledgeable, encouraging, and passionate about ceramics. What really sets this studio apart is the welcoming and inspiring community they've built. There's a great mix of beginners just starting out and experienced ceramicists creating amazing work, which makes for a really dynamic and inspiring environment. I loved it so much that I became a member to have 24/7 access, and it's been amazing to connect with so many creative people. I signed up for a private class here for a date night. I didn't get an official confirmation of the reservation or a detailed "what to expect" communication, which would have put me at ease leading up to the event. Also, it was pretty expensive and then it ended up not being private (there were others working in the space during our class). Although everyone was friendly and added to the fun, it would be good to know since it's not exactly advertised as a group setting. The class was fun and relaxing, but after over a month I kept having to ask when our pieces would be finished. They kept telling me to come back another time. Finally, when I asked again over email, they admitted that they probably broke. This was really heart breaking. I'd understand if it was one item, but all of them?? They could have been straight forward with me and handled it so much better. Overall, a disappointing experience and I wouldn't pay for a private lesson again. read more

I'm on my second round of classes at Mudworks. It is a great place to learn both wheel and slab construction from highly qualified instructors. They also have memberships and their classes come with free independent studio time each week. The entire staff is always willing to help. It's on a really nice little block with ample street parking. Mudworks sells tools and clay for those who need it. They also have a large array of tools to use while there. Fellow potters are very responsible about cleaning up after themselves so the work areas stay nicely clean. The studio recycles clay religiously so everyone is good about disposing of scraps or slip to facilitate this process. Only caveat is that classes beginning or ending near the pm rush hour will hit a lot of traffic on 80. read more
