Fenocchio should be the gold standard when it comes to ice cream. Seriously. When Tory Burch's blog sent out a summer email about what to wear for the holiday, and Tory's favorite ice cream places around the world, I knew I had to take a peak. With a stroke of luck, one of the favorites was in Nice where we were headed! So naturally, we had to make a stop. We were greeted by four cases (FOUR) of icecreams and sorbets. Roughly 90 some flavors to choose from...this is a dilemma I have no qualms about repeating in the future. We chose the Speculoos flavor (addicted, sorry) and were swept off our feet--love at first lick. Cards against Humanity has a card that says "licking things to claim them as your own." I wish we owned entire gallon tubs of Fenocchio--to always have on hand for emergencies. You'll be hard pressed to find a better option anywhere in Nice, or all of France for that matter. Fenocchio also makes beautiful ice cream cakes, bon bons, and tarts as well as offering milkshakes, sunades, and crepes laden with ice creamy goodness. Even if you find it out of your way on a visit to the Côte d'azur, make the time to treat yourself. On a diet? Live a little. read more

Yes, it lives up to the hype. Why do I say that? Because I literally ate there every day I was on vacation (and I was here for 7 days). My fave was the conficture da lait and the caramel de sale. Our Airbnb host didn't even blink for a second when he answered Fenocchio during our interrogation of Nice's go-to gelateria. They advertise over 100 flavors here, including crazy flavors like beer, and more exotic flavors like lavender (which my friend got. I tried it - eh...I'd prefer lavender as more of a smell rather than a taste...not a huge fan of eating soap and candle wax). I wonder if more is less...? Oh the paradox of choice! I stuck with my traditional fundamentals of pistachio and dark chocolate, and thought both were really good. The dark chocolate wasn't overpowering, and even though I had it first (on top of the pistachio), I was still able to taste the latter, which was quite refreshing. There are so many amazing flavors and it's difficult to decide on just one or even two! It's probably just good given that it's conveniently located in a tourist trap. And in typical French fashion, the customer service was just ok. I'm sure it's due to the volume of customers, but there are no free tastings here. Pick what you want and pay. The good thing about Fenocchio is the sheer variety of flavors. Every flavor imaginable at Fenocchio; creamy, tasty, and nestled next to a fountain between some small but active alleyways in Nice. I tried the Cannelle (cinnamon) & Café favors & really enjoyed both. The café flavor was impactful and strong, but I think they could have used a tad more cinnamon in their Cannelle flavor (if you prefer just a subtle cinnamon flavor then this is perfect for you). It was my mission to try as much gelato as possible on 2 week tour of Europe. This gelato shop seemed to be packed, so I had high hopes. At 4 euros for 2 scoops it isn't a bargain. We chose caramel and tiramisu. The caramel was terrible!! The tiramisu was edible. I'm not sure why it was so busy! Maybe just convenience/location?! Very central location with free wifi in the area. As for the ice cream, the texture and quality is above average, but what Fenocchio does really well is their range of flavors. I've tried the nougat, milk flower, and calisson flavors. The first two are really good, but I don't think you can go wrong with any flavor. Fenocchio is the most popular gelato place in Nice. I can easily see why because they have soooooo many different flavors. I think they advertise that they have over 100 flavors. The wide selection may be good for some people, but for someone who has a hard time making decisions, having so many different flavors becomes a problem. My go-to flavors are strawberry and mango sorbet, but I was feeling adventurous and got watermelon and coconut at Fenocchio. The watermelon flavor tasted exactly like watermelon, but I thought it was a little too sweet for my liking. I like my sorbet with a little tart flavor, but I guess watermelon is never really tart so it doesn't work out. The coconut flavor on the other hand was amazing. It had little bits and pieces of coconut in it and was perfectly creamy. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go back to try the other flavors but I suggest for you to try all the flavors and find your favorite. read more

I tried cactus, violet, and another flavor that escapes my memory. I also asked for a sample of the tomato basil. Cactus was actually my favorite. I don't know what kind of cactus or what the flavor reminded me of, but I really enjoyed the flavor. It was like a sorbet. Violet was very nice. Lots of violet pieces. I saw this place on yelp and happened to pass by it in Nice! I thought they were pretty good, but only the sorbets. I got passion fruit and strawberry and both weren't too sweet and more on the fruity sour side. I wouldn't recommend being adventurous with the flavors as they don't allow samples. I came here TWO years ago when I studied abroad and I STILL can't stop thinking about it. I had a scoop of the rose flavor and one of cream of milk with almond. This is good ice cream with great flavors! We were enamored with all of the options and ended up here several times within 24hrs. I was obsessed with violet and paired it with vanilla meringue. My first time having it was when my tour guide from my hostel had us try it on our way to a big hike up a cliff and man... did she make the right decision. But it was so good with all it's 91 flavors ( that's right you heard me right, 91- that is 3 times the flavors of Baskin Robbins). Here's what you need to know about this review: I am a parent. We brought our two children, ages two and four to Europe for the entire summer. We do not feed our kids sweets, unless it's holiday or birthday related...the exception to our rule is when we are in Europe, where every day our children had some sort of gelato. That many days in Europe, between Barcelona, the South of France and Paris, we experienced many a gelato. This place was an afterthought. We went ice-cream free for a few days, but our son worked for this gelato and in looking for a specific shop to obtain his reward, we stumbled upon Fenocchio. The selection is a bit overwhelming. My husband is very loyal to his chocolate chip mint flavor, so he had no problem in deciding. Our children went back and forth-stepping on toes of nuns and other patrons to decide, then switch their choice and so on. So the large selection was my main and only complaint. I think we settled on coconut, a berry flavor and a Stracciatella (the stripes of chocolate in the Stracciatella were amazing)! Creamy, not too sweet, and flavored perfectly.
