Seriously, this place is where we ended up eating our dinner for both the nights we were in town. They were easily 10+ Swiss Francs less than any other restaurant that we looked at; we finally said, screw it, let's just eat at the same place again. The best dish that everyone must have - the pork schnitzel, covered in a golden brown mushroom sauce, and a generous size of spätzle. Holy moly, this dish is amazing. If you eat here, you must order this (unless you hate mushrooms...) Also, try one of the rosti's. It's the Swiss version of a hashbrown or potato pancake. I chose to top off with some veggies to be a bit healthier, even though truth is that there's plenty of oil at the bottom of the rosti. On the second night, we went back and also had the true wiener schnitzel, i.e. made of veal. This dish came with rosti as the side, but without the glorious mushroom sauce. At 10 Swiss Francs more, I say order the pork schnitzel instead. When you order beer, they give you the one kind of beer they have on tap. We don't even know what kind it is. LOL. There are other types in bottles otherwise.

We dined here on the advice of our concierge and it turned out to be a good bet. After ordering a refreshing local lager, I opted for the fixed price menu for CH68, which is a little over 70 bucks. Yeah, things are pricey in Switzerland, but this was a meal well prepared, well presented, and full of flavorful surprises! Two cute little samosas with avocado cream sauce and what looked like lentil sprouts were presented by the staff as soon as we ordered. These were tasty and an indication of good things to come. Our salads arrived looking fabulous, with big, grilled prawns, and some of the freshest organic lettuce I've had in a while. But the best part were the slices of fresh creamy avocado lining the bottom of the salad plate. A truly outstanding salad in every way. This was followed by a tasty tomato soup, again homemade, with fresh basil and cream. This was a bit tart for me, although I devoured every bite. The main was a big fillet of organic salmon on a bed of lentils and light mustard sauce. Very good, but the fish was a touch overcooked to my taste. On a sidenote, I've become sensitive to a delicacy of fish and usually like a bit on the "raw" side. So I'm not complaining a bit about this preparation - I think most customers wouldn't have even noticed. For dessert a gorgeous white and chocolate mousse presentation, a marvel to taste buds and delightful to the eye. This was creamy and not too sweet - perfect for me. The service was great, with the waiters first speaking to us in German, then in French, then finally in English, realizing we were American. I recommend Le Train Bleu anytime you're in Basel on business or pleasure. The location is great and the people-watching from the outer patio is reason enough to hang out here, even if you only want a beer!

It will be a dish that I will never forget, be on my top meals, and crave for it to eternity. Was so simple and fresh. I think only 4 ingredients total. Wasn't the typical creamed soup you get in America. They showcased the Asparagus to it's highest form. Can't say enough. Long story short, yes, it was de-li-cio-so!!! Definitely go here if you are near Basel. Parking was on street and free at night. Show up without a reservation and try to get a table! They had an extensive vegetarian menu and all of it was amazing. I enjoyed the mushroom cannelloni, my husband had the pumpkin risotto, and my mother-in-law had a pleasantly spiced pumpkin soup. For desserts we each chose differently, and had bites from each other, but I was secretly very, very happy and pleased with my *plum tiramisu*!!! Very definitely recommend that, and any of the sorbets. They were creamy without using milk or cream. My husband had the pear sorbet which was very good. My mother-in-law tried the plum torte which came with a plum sorbet. A fresh mint tea to finish it off, cappuccino for the others. Highly recommend this restaurant.

I was recommended to visit this restaurant for traditional Swiss cuisine by a few locals. My friend…read moreand I came here for lunch. The place is located in the heart of Basel, right on one of the main promenades, so it was quite busy that day, mostly with tourists. The restaurant has a big indoor area, plus outdoor seating. We decided to sit inside to enjoy its classic Swiss design and cozy vibe. You can sense the historic charm in the atmosphere, but everything inside was still well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our waiter was very nice and helpful - he gave us tips about Swiss food and recommended a couple of dishes from the menu. The menu, by the way, wasn't very big, and it focused on traditional Swiss classics. We decided to share two dishes: Wienerschnitzel and Cheese Fondue (Käsefondue). The food came out quickly, within about 15 minutes. The pork schnitzel was flavorful and tender, with a perfectly enjoyable texture. We chose French fries as the side, and they were cooked really well. But the star of our lunch was definitely the Cheese Fondue - absolutely delicious! The cheese they used was incredibly rich and flavorful, and the fresh bread served with it was also tasty. Dipping the bread into the melted cheese made it a truly delightful experience. Both dishes were generous in size and more than enough for two people. The only negative about this restaurant is the prices, which are extremely high. The Cheese Fondue cost 38 CHF (about $48) PER PERSON, and the Wienerschnitzel was 40 CHF (about $50). Even though the food was excellent, I found these prices far too steep. The soft drinks we ordered were also expensive - 6 CHF ($8) for a cup of black tea or a Diet Coke. I'm from Miami, where restaurants are pricey too, but not this expensive, so even I was shocked when we got the final bill. Finalizing my review, I can say that I loved every part of my experience at the restaurant except the prices. It's definitely not a place I could afford to eat at every day (like I do in many restaurants in Miami, since I don't cook), but I still recommend checking this restaurant at least once for the experience - to try truly delicious Swiss food. Trust me and order the Cheese Fondue for sure!
