Having mainly seen waxing services offered at your cheap asian type nail salons, I was seeking out somewhere more specialised after hearing some horror stories from others experiences! And then of the few waxing specific places I had seen, their booking times seemed to be extremely limited and nobody wants a rushed waxing experience because surely that can only lead to more pain! i was taking a wander down Johnston Street one Saturday afternoon and saw the sign for Clara's Beauty Room out on the street and put a note in my phone to investigate this further. I researched the website which in itself was very professional - always a good sign in my book! I then had a look at the facebook page and all the reviews seemed very positive, and so along with the Spring Specials advertised on the website, I decided I needed to give this place a go and if I had my own horror story at the end of it, then so be it. I am SO glad that Clara's was the place I finally took my Melbourne waxing leap. Horror story it was NOT! Let me start by saying Clara is an absolute gem! She made me feel comfortable immediately and the room where the waxing is done is just a little oasis (you enter via Monarch Hairdressers - and they were equally as welcoming to me and not dismissive like other businesses who share premises can be and directed me where to wait whilst offering me a coffee or tea and some magazines to read while Clara finished up with her previous client!). I had chosen one of the spring sale packages consisting of a brazilian, full leg wax and eyelash tint (which all together was under $90!!!). Once Clara had brought me into her beauty room, she had a bit of an introductory chat and then said she would start with the full leg wax while I got comfortable with her and then we could move onto the brazilian if I was comfortable - I have never had that offered to me before! There was no way I couldn't feel comfortable though because like I said, she is an absolute gem and I just loved the experience (as fun as getting hair ripped out of your body can be of course!). It was finished off with the lash tint, which she said she would leave on for 20 minutes instead of the usual 10 as she felt it would last longer that way, but if I was feeling irritable by lying with my eyes shut for that long that she could remove it sooner. I had no problems with this and she even gave me a lovely hand and arm massage to fill in the time. My expectations were definitely met and exceeded and I am SO happy I came across this business. I rebooked for the same package before I left as I can't see me going anywhere else.

That being said, they also have to be incredibly efficient, professional and compassionate, because it's usually a damn uncomfortable experience. Missie CoCo is absolutely fantastic because it ticks all of these boxes and more! Missie CoCo is in a cute little bungalow off of Chapel street, and from the second you walk through the door you'll feel relaxed. You're kind of wafted with scents of citrus as you walk down the hall to the front desk. Seriously, I'm not kidding - this place smells absolutely amazing. They have a great array of beauty products to check out while you wait for your appointment, and they'll usually offer you some water as well. The ladies here offer all kinds of services, from make-up to waxing, and I've never heard a single bad thing about any of them. They have great bedside manner and you always end up walking out of there feeling confident and ready to face the world! I usually see the same woman each visit, but occasionally she's been away so I've had to see someone else, and every single beautician has been outstanding. Missie CoCo passes the ultimate test for me - it's a place I would (and have!) recommend to a friend. The salon is small, you walk in to a small room where there is 2 brow service Chairs, the counter and a waiting bench. On a busy day it might feel quite daunting sitting facing the street while you are getting your brows waxed and tweezed. Lucky for me it was a quiet day and actually by the time you sit down its not a big issue and you almost forget how busy Sydney road is in front of you. They do not offer shorter staff the proper equipment, which is uncomfortable for the customer and would have long term issues for the staff back (an OH&S issue). The hygiene could be better, they only put down a square paper towel which slips away due the oil on the bed. The rooms are small meaning your feet touch the work bench. The last straw was when the most recent beautician I got there had only worked as a beautician for three weeks. It was the most painful wax I have had in a number of years. She did not pull the strip smoothly off or in the right direction, meaning she went over the same spot over and over again. Death by a 1000 waxes strips. I have been a client of Brow Theory for a while, but unfortunately I had never been able to fill my card with enough stamps to claim a freebie, because with a schedule that's a bit all over the place and haphazard beauty routine - I rarely found myself with enough time to get out to Armadale or remember in time to book in one of the popular Wednesday/Friday sessions they did at Miss Fox. Having tried other places more convenient to me in the meantime and having suffered from uneven brows and horrible patchy red skin for up to a week following, I was thrilled to see them open a permanent home in the CBD. This will forever be my go-to now and I *may* even maintain the things now instead of waiting for them to be gross to get them fixed! I popped in today for their opening special to get a full shape up before having lunch with my best friend. The only girl I would let lunch with me with firey-red patchy skin. Only I didn't have that problem. In fact she commented that apart from being meticulously neat, she couldn't even tell that I just had them done. Brow win. The staff are incredibly lovely and good at what they do. My brows are an awkward shape and will never grow properly thanks to a bad waxing job as a teenager, but the girls always discuss what they're going to do to make them as even as possible to make me feel comfortable before they attack them with thread.
