This is one of the places I've had in my little black book as a must visit. In fact, of the many places in Birmingham scribbled within the same pages Fazeley was in my top three ... as soon as I get the chance! I see the place mentioned quite a bit and somehow I'd picked up that it was a great place to hang out at.
So, I had the chance. It was a good 15 minute slog from over the other side of Digbeth in a hot, muggy day with full 'office' backpack, but i made it. Why only two stars. First, loud music of dubious taste, making phone calls impossible. Second, probably the worst flat white I have ever had ... anywhere.Third, the service was Ok, nothing special and somewhat haphazard, e.g. with no idea which end of the line is the front (was there a line or just a free-for-all?), multiple staff asking was I being served (not paying attention!) The kind of vague, friendly enough service you get when no-one gets the customer perspective, or takes much responsibility. It's just a shift to be worked. Fourth, the decor is mildly cheap in a 'shop-fitted' to a budget kinda way, zero style which is a surprise for Digbeth, just not where I want to be sitting. Finally, the vibe here is non existent ... like popping into a McDonalds with lots going on for sure, but nothing holding it together.
Back to the coffee ... I know my flat whites. I've made a few thousand or so. I prefer my coffee on the cooler side, not in any crazy way, just prepared at the right temperature to extract the very best from what the beans can offer. Mine arrived in a paper cup with a lid on, even tho' I was clear I was sitting in. I could tell it was 'warm' so I let it sit for 5 minutes. I took the lid off and sipped. OMG, I pretty much scalded myself it was so hot. These people have no idea how to make coffee: Illy beans, not the best but OK for a mass produced blend if you get the extraction right (they didn't), and a no-name coffee machine I can just about accept, but to charge £2.50 for such a flat, tasteless, burnt, mediocre brew is unforgivable. I left it ... read more
