She was very personable and her professionalism shown with her willingness to help. She was punctual, and had papers done when she said she would. No excuses. She was available whenever I had a question, she was thorough and answered my questions, sometimes without even hearing the question! I liked that she was very organized and informative and no question was too small or unimportant. She made me feel very comfortable explaining legal terms, if I didn't understand something. I would highly recommend Lauren Rios !!

Bumping my review by one star. After reading glorious reviews, Lauren Rios was my number one choice and the first attorney I contacted. The receptionist took down my personal details only to inform me right away that they are not accepting new clients at this time. I wasn't asked for any details of my situation to determine whether the firm has the expertise or the bandwidth to take on my case, now or in the future. This left me wondering whether my Jewish-sounding last name made them turn me away without any further consideration. After all, it would be enough to ask for a first name only in order to carry on a conversation.

Since the 2 stars (which equates to the "[service] could've been better") were due to the unprofessionalism and inattentiveness shown (not due to her being an LDA), I have no reason to change my rating or delete my review. TL;DR: Marizen is NOT a lawyer. She is a Legal Document Assistant that cannot provide you with legal advice. She is a significantly affordable option for a Living Trust but she is unprofessional and has poor attention to detail-- key characteristics that are paramount to detailing an important document. Details: I left a Living Trust inquiry via her site and Marizen emailed me back within 1 day to "text" her back for a scheduled over-the-phone consult. Upon speaking with Marizen it was clear she did not take the time to review the few questions I had sent her in my initial inquiry as she was confused as to what the consult would primarily be regarding. Her rates were significantly less than what other competing services were offering which raised an orange flag for me. Upon further research, I realized Marizen was NOT a lawyer, but rather a "Legal Document Assistant (LDA)." According to the CA Attorney General, LDAs cannot give legal advice. This was my first encounter with an LDA, which allowed me the opportunity to do the necessary research to make a more educated investment. Had Marizen gotten back to me with the necessary next steps and questionnaire as she had promised (it's been over 1.5 weeks), I may have considered her as a possible option to complete my Living Trust needs. But if you are looking for a more affordable option, perhaps Marizen is a good fit for you.

There is no work product expected, just discussion and conversation, with perhaps some advice as to next steps, sometimes with that professional, often another. As a patient-centric physician, that has been my posture on a first meeting. I spend perhaps an hour or so at the end of the work day and generally do not bill the patient for what is in essence a "get to know you" social call. This has been my general experience in the past. Occasionally the advice as to next steps does not comport with my own understanding, and I look elsewhere for corroboration one way or the other. In the case of tax questions, it is to an accountant. In the case of proposed surgery, it is another physician. Occasionally it is personal research with other experts. For an important life decision (creating an estate plan is in this category, or a critical medical procedure), there has to be concurrence. This did not occur when I checked out counterintuitive suggestions given by Mary Lin that had adverse tax consequences. I have since considered other options and other attorneys with broader experience to deal with an unusual situation. My experience interviewing these attorneys aligns with the above, an hour to assess chemistry and competency. This time (perhaps reflecting our mutual maturity) has been given gratis, much as my time spent with meeting older patients for the first time. Thus I was a bit surprised to receive an invoice (albeit with a 20% discount) for my "getting acquainted" discussion with Mary that left me with uncertainties later verified. I will pay her bill but am unlikely to proceed further. I had positive expectations from early background checking, a slightly negative opinion when there was a disconnect with advice from other professionals, that is now exacerbated by "paying for bad advice". Perhaps it is a generational difference (I am twice Mary's age), or a cultural difference, or simply a professional difference between practicing medicine and practicing law. But I do feel that full trust and reliance is necessary as one executes end-of-life decisions, be they legal or medical. This review is provided not as a criticism but as a commentary on choosing help with estate planning. One has to get it right. Without doubt.
