I have just had a perfectly good experience renting a car from enterprise…read more Of course there were all the usual car rental company stuff of full insurance being extra otherwise, otherwise I am responsible for first £1000, even if it is someone else's fault,. Also extra for roadside assistance otherwise will have to pay for that cost if needed as well. The thing which removed5th star was something I have not had from a car rental company before. The tank was only 1/6thl and was told that should return it back 1/6th full. If it was under they said they would only charge me pump price for petrol, but it all seems a bit complicated. For myself this sounded posible although I did not really want it, would have preferred if the car had been full like at all other car rental companies I have ever used. At the pump it was just impossible to do, as a result I returned it close to full. When I asked they would not refund my card because they said I have paid in advance on the nternet, they also said cars are only given full at airports and not another branches. They also said it is because most customers like to return the cars with less fuel and like the them to top it up. I have probably rented cars about 40 times in the past and never heard any of this. As a result they gave me a voucher which can only be used to get free fuel with Enterprise the next time I rent from them, there is no other option. So next time at Enterprise I can have half a tank of fuel. Again I think this will lead to more problems because how can I calculate a tank being half full. If I receive the tank being half full do I return it empty? I would use Enterprise again as it has been fine, but if this less than half tank full tank thing happens again, I may well go elsewhere. It sounds fine in theory, but in practice is impossible to do it accurately.

Generally London is not a city in which you need a car (unless you have kids that is) but there are…read morethose times when you are scrabbling through your address book trying to find the person you knew who had an estate because your mate is giving you a free mattress that you have agreed to take, but can't transport or when you are having a big summer bbq to celebrate the fact that you have a nice new big garden with your new flat, but are trying to figure out how to get the bbq back from B&Q, never mind the burgers and the booze. That's when these car co's may be of use. There are two that I have come accross, streetcar and Zip cars (which I think is American). Basically you pay a yearly fee of around £50 and then you can just book a car - the same day if you wish - and pay around £6 or 7 an hour to use it. With Streetcar you pay by the half hour and you get 30 miles free per 24hrs (so you don't have to pay for petrol within those miles) with Zip you pay by the hour but get 60 miles per 24hrs free. I'm not really sure if these are better than a cab - for short jouneys or a regular hire car - unless you are gonna use them a lot and so are cutting out the admin - but it's your call, good idea, but maybe not cheap enough to really make it a go-er.

I had a long layover in London and needed to get to Gatwick airport for my next flight. In between I decided I wanted to see some sights get some fish and chips and then get dropped off at Gatwick. Howard (the owner) was able to accommodate me and my guest without a problem. He got me a quote quickly and let me know a driver would be waiting for me at the airport. Alf came to pick us up in an immaculate S 550 sedan. He gave us a great tour of some of the sights in the city, and had great historical facts and stories to go along with every sight. His passion for the city really brought the trip to life. This layover could have easily been wasted time, but thanks to Alf and Howard it started our trip off perfectly!
