The reception desk is behind glass and we patiently awaited either of the two ladies talking inside the office to assist us or at the very least acknowledge our presence at the desk. During our approximately five minute wait, one of the two ladies looked our way, but never indicated that they saw us and would be with us at some point in time. After what we believe was an extraordinary amount of waiting, we decided to leave without talking to any staff member. I sent an email to management via their website to describe our experience and never got a reply from them. While I am not willing to assume that the care-givers would exhibit similar behavior, I am still somewhat dismayed that any employee of Beaverton Lodge would ignore someone seeing assistance at this facility.

I wish they could have lived at Hearthstone but ultimately we had to go with Sunnyside Care Center in Salem which was "ok" but not great (for instance there was always a lot of "beeping", TVs going and lots of fluorescent lighting and the smell of cleaning materials). Not terrible, just not especially "homey". During my tour of Hearthstone at Murrayhill (and many other visits subsequently) I found that there is a down-to-earth family atmosphere at Hearthstone. Fresh flowers, daily activities indoors and out - and the chef cooks with real food that looks good and tastes delicious. The memory care wing is clean and peaceful with the usual activities one sees for this kind of care - but you can really tell that the staff is personally invested in the residents' quality of life and that the residents enjoy them too. When a person has to live somewhere 24/7, it helps if the lighting is pleasant and the atmosphere feels like home. I really think Hearthstone has done a terrific job in that department. I recommend taking a tour so you can see for yourself - and maybe go there a few times just to get a sense of the activities and atmosphere.

The location is bright and smells clean, the staff always welcome us when we arrive and have listened to us when we have had concerns or ideas in the past. Residents are welcomed to join each other at the dinning room tables of four, and Canfield also offers games, activities and exercise. There are groups who come in to the center to play musical instruments, sing, sell small items like candy/cookies, and perform. The trivia games are one of my grandfather's favorite activities to participate in. He tells us about a new game every time we visit. There's often Wii Bowling that is fun to watch as well as participate in. The nurses and medical staff at Canfield have made sure that my grandfather is able to have his medicine daily, on time and the amount that has been prescribed to him. This is an additional fee on top of the monthly rent, but has been worth the extra to make sure that every i is dotted, and t is crossed. We can feel confident in the attention that he's getting thanks to this helpful addition. The staff check with my grandfather's doctors about medicine updates, and are able to order perscribtions to arrive at Canfield instead of family members having to pick up from a local pharmacy and deliver them to the center. The option to have a personal car drive my grandfather to appointments has been another comfort that we're willing to pay for. There is a small fee, but it's personal service and the level of independence that my grandfather feels is huge. We love that he can tell us, "I went to the dentist today," thanks to this service. Each resident at Canfield wears an emergency call button on a bracelet on their wrist or around their neck. When my grandfather found that he couldn't get out of bed from his nap he pushed the button and immediately the staff determined that they should transport him to the hospital. Thanks to this quick thinking and response my grandfather has no lasting affects from this episode. The dinning room offers a rotating menu with options that appeal to my grandfather's tastes. The kitchen has recently been remolded and the dinning room space is open and bright! The residents are also able to pick from standard items on an additional menu. There are always options like oatmeal and bacon or eggs for breakfast. If it's between meal times there is tea, coffee and ice cream available. If a resident were to want to have a meal delivered to their room that is an option for an additional fee. There is also an option to have a staff member walk the resident to the dinning room (another additional fee). All of these options make the care at Canfield just what each resident needs. We have enjoyed holiday dinners hosted by Canfeild too. You are welcome to buy a meal and join residents year round. We loved the Easter brunch they served and my parents were so excited to share Thanksgiving dinner with my grandfather at Canfeild, NO DISHES to clean up! Bonus! My grandfather's room has a little kitchenette equpped with a microwave, refrigerator and sink. We originally picked Canfield because my grandfather was able to bring his small poodle with him (that's right, pets are welcome!). Canfield offered us a room where my grandfather is able to exit on the ground floor to let the dog outside, but they also offer the option of having a staff member let the dog out if a resident isn't able to (for a fee). We all know how important pets are, and how they can really affect our quality of life for the better. This option made Canfeild a no-brainer for us as a family when my grandfather was no longer able to live on his own. We are thankful that my grandfather is at Canfield and always know they will take great care of him!

Our first impression came from retirement counselor Veronica, whose warmth, compassion, and guidance were exceptional. We assumed Touchmark was simply putting its very best foot forward by having someone like her lead prospective families through the process. What we've learned since my father moved in is that Veronica wasn't the exception--she exemplifies Touchmark's culture. Every staff member we've met has shown such kindness, respect, and genuine interest and care. Touchmark's marketing materials talk about being a friend, an ally, and a giver. In our experience, they absolutely walk the walk. My dad tells people often, "This place employs every kind of person, but they all have one thing in common: they're NICE. And not fake, plastic nice." Knowing my father is surrounded by people who treat him with such warmth and dignity has given us enormous peace of mind. Touchmark was the right choice and we are deeply grateful.

I should have written this earlier than now. The care staff is inadequate for the needs of the residents. They are underpaid and under-trained. I was in two apartments where the maintenance was let go, and both had serious problems. The last had a mold problem because a leak in the A/C was not repaired for over a month. I moved out. Take a good look at the lack of upkeep or renewal of the facility, appraise the landscaping which is lacking, and question the care capabilities of the staff before you go there!

This is a challenging time with Covid-19, but Liz arranged for us to see (by some different means) 4 adult foster care homes all in one afternoon. She also came to each appointment with us and jumped in appropriately to ask owners questions that she knew we needed answers to. She also provided us with a basic questionnaire form so that we had a list of some good questions to ask each owner.
