Based on my description of liking Guinness but wanting something local, he recommended Farr Brew bitter and offered me a sample. He was generous and upon my liking it- he poured a proper 1/2 pint.

I love pubs with a little blackboard behind the bar detailing the constantly changing selection of ales. I enjoyed a Sauvin So Good and an Old Woman's loose gown (wahey!), both from local brewers I believe. They also had 'guest crisps' so I enjoyed some pickled onion monster munchgreat tasting but foul smelling. The layout inside is pleasant but most people were in the small area outside leaving me with just the Machine brothers for company (fruit and cigarette taking care of their younger sibling, quiz). In the evenings, things get much busier as this is another of St Alban's small live music venues (as a found on my more recent visit). Might be my favourite pub in St Albans, but I can't quite decide.

There is a very large bar area, to the right as you walk in, as I said above, which serves very cheap drinks & typical Weatherspoons fare & which doubles as a disco/club at the weekend, also a chill area with large high backed leather chairs in the entrance lounge area. To your left is a more up market restaurant which has a very tasty & restaurant standard menu, it has been a while since I had dinner with a friend there, but last time it was very good, I think I had swordfish steak & vegetables for the main & profiteroles for dessert (Can't recall the starter) The music is good & the staff efficient & friendly, you have to pay to go in after a certain time on Friday & Saturday nights when there is a DJ (I think its after 9.30 or 10pm can't recall 100%) Well worth a visit, a nice venue that wont break the bank

James and was a bit disappointed that I didn't have time to stay for another, they seem to rotate their selection of ales on a regular basis (they have a list for the month on the tables) I would have liked to have tried some of the food too, it seemed quite popular as the friendly barmaid bustled in and out of the kitchen with orders. It's off the beaten path of most tourist spots. I love a real English pub, and this place is rotten with charm. Foragers brews some of their own ales. I tried a unique ale that was flavored with Doug fir needles. That was a recurring theme in some of the food. The FOOD! The food is why I would go back again and again. Foragers is an incredibly creative restaurant without being pretentious. I didn't find one item on the menu, that I could get some place else. I got two dishes. One was a seasonal root vegetable soup. A hearty soup that was warming and so delicious. The entree was a mushroom and barley dish that had one of the best earthy, mushroom tastes I've ever had. On a cold winter night, I couldn't have found a more comforting meal. With a beer, the soup and then this dish, I was stuffed, but had to finish every last bite of the barley. I'm lucky to have a work project that is brining me to St Albans several times this year. This is going to be my place for dinner when I am in town.
