Jeremiah's Italian Ice - Oreo mud pie gelati (cookies and cream Italian ice, vanilla and chocolate swirl soft serve, crumbled Oreo pieces)

This dessert shop is located in a sort of inauspicious looking shopping mall in Madison. It's right next door to Just Love Coffee and a storefront that says it's about to become "Dogtopia." The parking lot is very long and fairly wide; no troubles there. I arrived right after they opened and it was spotless and had that nice, bright, clean scent I associate with freshly mopped floors. I understand it's sometimes annoying to have a customer come in on the early side of opening, but a staff member came out and served me politely. I explained I'd never visited before and she gave me a brief run down of what kind of treat I could build. They have Italian ice, soft serve, and then what they call gelati -- not to be confused as the plural of gelato; this means a mixture of both Italian ice AND soft serve. This seems to be their signature thing. You can build your own gelati by selecting flavors and toppings, or pick from a curated menu of popular combinations. I chose the latter, since it was less intimidating, lol. If I remember correctly, what I got was called an Oreo mud pie. It had cookies and cream Italian ice, vanilla and chocolate swirled soft serve, and crumbled Oreo pieces layered in. I got the smallest size serving and thought the price was reasonable and the serving size satisfying. Overall, I enjoyed this dessert. I definitely liked the soft serve more than the Italian ice, but that doesn't really surprise me; I usually prefer creamier treats. The soft serve was smooth and had a distinct vanilla flavor. The Italian ice was okay; oddly, it had a peculiar minty taste to it, in addition to the faintly chocolatey, faintly creamy cookies and cream vibe. Perhaps it was made in the same machine as a different, minty flavor? Not really sure what caused it, but I didn't dislike it. I appreciated that the staff member asked while I was eating if I was happy with what I got. This seems like a sweet place to bring kids and family members for a unique dessert. Give it a try sometime.

Review is only for atmosphere and service; I was unable to actually try the food because of, well,…read moreservice. Only reason this is a 2 star instead of a 1 -- it's possible the ice cream is good, but I sure didn't get to try it. Located off the main drag of highway in Madison, this is a small chain offering rolled ice cream, milkshakes, cookies, and liege waffles with decadent toppings. It's been here a little while and so I thought I'd stop by for an afternoon treat while waiting to attend an event nearby. I entered into the smallish, narrow space and was immediately struck by how...dead it felt. There was one other customer (or perhaps an owner/manager, though if it was, that's kind of disappointing given my experience). It was kind of dark inside and it smelled weird -- not noxious or anything but a little musty and certainly not a yummy, sweet, ice cream, cookie, or waffle scent like you might expect. I wasn't greeted but I wandered up to the register where an employee was listlessly -- and I mean LISTLESSLY - pushing around a few sad ice cream rolls. Every other time I've watched ice cream get rolled the worker has almost been like a hibachi chef, rapidly cutting, dicing, rolling, and flipping. This reminded me of picking a scab. I said hello; I don't remember if the young female employee said anything back, she might've muttered an acknowledgement but it definitely wasn't a warm welcome. Having never been here before, I was a little unclear on the process (eg, what are mix-ins vs toppings; what's available; are there pre-made creations, etc), but she never offered to answer any questions or render assistance, even as I stood for several minutes gazing up at the menu. All I heard from her for a while - as she continued to listlessly scrape the ice cream around - were several very loud, gnarly-sounding sniffles. They were bad enough that I started to feel concerned she was sick. These concerns were further worsened by the fact she wasn't wearing gloves. While that thought flickered through my mind, I abruptly heard her say, "I'm sorry." I assumed she was talking to me since I'd been waiting for a while, and so I reflexively said, "You're fine!" I quickly realized she wasn't speaking to me at all and was instead having a conversation on the phone through the headphones she was wearing. Nice. This went on for another minute or two -- it was a fairly personal conversation and she seemed to be consoling someone on the other end -- and I just decided it wasn't worth the hassle and frustration. Y'all know I try my best to be very forgiving of service and such but this was a bridge too far for me. I had read reviews prior to coming here about service being bad and I thought surely people were overreacting or being entitled but now I don't think so. Perhaps the product is good, but you'll be hard-pressed to sell much of it if employees aren't even willing to make it for customers.

I drive through providence ar least twice a day. And to tell you the truth, I don't see any of it. I'm planning my day or planning dinner. Planning a vacation or planning how to pay for it. I never noticed Whit's. But my husband, who doesn't notice anything, knew it was there. We waited in line for quite awhile. The cashier yelled that the vanilla custard was out. That didn't bother me - I was getting chocolate. Hubs opted for chocolate so he wouldn't have to wait. Whit's offers only 3 flavors on any given day. Vanilla, chocolate and a special flavor. Tonight it was Andes mint chip. There is a large menu on the wall that lists the details and prices. There are also specialties, many named for locales around Huntsville - Redstone Raspberry Rumble, Rocket City Madness. You can order them as sundaes or as a "Whitser" - similar to a blizzard. We opted for mini whitsers. Thank heavens we ordered minis - we could barely finish. I think I might try it as a sundae next time. The custard is soft - you have the option of a waffle cone but I highly recommend a bowl or a cup. If you don't believe me, you better have a lot of napkins! I'm so glad my husband actually noticed something. Maybe he'll notice the dishes in the sink or the pile of laundry growing next to the hamper. I highly doubt it!
